Intel six core i7 980 X vs FSX

Featured Replies

For 4.8GHz the amount of VCore is too high, so I do not try this out. The difference between 4.0 and 4.6 is about 3 FPS average. But more important: you can use higher settings and smoothness is better.

As soon as I winn the lotto I am buying one of those.... :)

dam, if that isn't sloppy programming I don't know what isIt looks like going over 4GHz really doesn't matter *sigh*
Not at these small steps at least. Notice what I said, more for fun, on another thread: until we got 10-20ghz (and still a compatible x86 processor), we won't be able to run FSX fully with all the bells and whistles @ 60fps everywhere. FSX is so CPU bound, right now we are maxing the silicon chips, and new architecture is needed, of which I heard something of, but have no real idea about it.

After the last days playing around with i7 980 X, I must say that this CPU is a real beast! Can run FSX with the highest settings now, BUT... Unfortunately I have an new (old) issue with my graphics card. After many weeks I have to say, that ATI is not the Vendor of my choice when it comes to FSX. Therefore my next step is to go back to nvidia and buy myself a GTX480 as soon as they are available. I will report back here in the Avsim Forum.

Thank you, crashmax. I want to upgrade my cpu i7 920 @ 4.1 Ghz to extreme edition. after I read your post , I think it give smoothness of FSX but not FPS alright. I change my plan to buy SSD for FSX instead. because Cheaper cost and give smoothness.

Keep up the excellent updates concerning i980X and FSX.RH

Has anyone heard of cryopc in the UK? (www.cryopc.co.uk). They are offering the i780x at 5.2Ghz with the Corsair H50 water cooler. I was considering this with an Asus P6X58D motherboard and a 256 Gb Crucial Real SSD. Still undecided with ATI or nvidia. Although expensive does this sound reasonable (particularly the stable o/c) or overkill for FSX?I would appreciate your thoughtsStewart

5.2 that's crazy fast. I wonder what sort of voltages their running? Nothin is overkill for FSX LOL!

5.2 seems pretty high, too high for 24/7 on water I think. But perhaps they have a golden Chip :(

As Phil Taylor stated in his blog, he and the Aces Team were surprised to learn (as well as Tom's Hardware and other respected Tech sites) the chip makers were going to drop the speed of a processor and go to the multicores (http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/archive/2007/02/14/the-pc-industry-multicore-and-fsx-with-a-little-dx10-thrown-in-for-good-measure.aspx). So the more cores in a CPU the faster and smoother the computer. Fortunately, they learned of this before FSX was released and they made provisions for additional cores (if Aces were still around maybe we could have had additional SP's to make FSX work much better but we must live with what we have until the new MS release). So, it is no shock to me that the 980x with 6 cores has to be faster and provide smoother ops. I don't think it's not really that much different from the 975X with four cores except that both chips cost about the same price and it is not a wise investment to buy the older chip. I'm pretty sure I'll be upgrading to this chip especially after reading the results provided by 'crashmax' (Thank You!) but only waiting for the Nvidia Fermi 480x and maybe a new MB to be developed that might better handle this latest technology. Best regards,Jim

Cool! So about 20-24 fps in NYC? That's pretty good considering you have AI turned up so high!
