March 23, 201016 yr Author Cool! So about 20-24 fps in NYC? That's pretty good considering you have AI turned up so high!FPS are between 22 and 38 (locked at 60).Great vid Crash! What happens when you take that same flight in spot view? The FPS jumps a bit up. Aprox. 3-5
March 26, 201016 yr crashmax , Asus will release Rampage III extreme mobo for 1366 socket . It have many new feature to improve system banwidth . I think why Overclocking give more framerate just because more FSB more system performance,I think ??
March 26, 201016 yr As Phil Taylor stated in his blog, he and the Aces Team were surprised to learn (as well as Tom's Hardware and other respected Tech sites) the chip makers were going to drop the speed of a processor and go to the multicores (http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/archive/2007/02/14/the-pc-industry-multicore-and-fsx-with-a-little-dx10-thrown-in-for-good-measure.aspx). So the more cores in a CPU the faster and smoother the computer. Fortunately, they learned of this before FSX was released and they made provisions for additional cores (if Aces were still around maybe we could have had additional SP's to make FSX work much better but we must live with what we have until the new MS release). So, it is no shock to me that the 980x with 6 cores has to be faster and provide smoother ops. I don't think it's not really that much different from the 975X with four cores except that both chips cost about the same price and it is not a wise investment to buy the older chip. I'm pretty sure I'll be upgrading to this chip especially after reading the results provided by 'crashmax' (Thank You!) but only waiting for the Nvidia Fermi 480x and maybe a new MB to be developed that might better handle this latest technology. Best regards,JimActually FSX was released without multi-core support. It was added in the SP1 update. Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
March 26, 201016 yr Commercial Member Hi Guys, this chip is a monster overclocker, I just read in custom PC, they had it running completely stable at over 5GHz using water cooling. Bodes well!!Cheers,Mark

March 26, 201016 yr Hey crashmax I just ordered my 980X a few days ago, its backordered so I have to wait a bit, I also picked up the same mobo as you, the last vid that you made sealed the deal for me, thanks
March 27, 201016 yr but only waiting for the Nvidia Fermi 480xThis 480x doesn't look so attractive, does it?http://www.techspot.com/ Michael J.
March 27, 201016 yr Holy crap those charts don't look too good. The Radeon 5870 is still smoking the new GTX280 yikes! errr nm that must be is crossfire configStill it appears the 5970 beats it more often than not. Of the gaming benchmarks, while the 5870 in X-Fire mode blows all those cards out of the water, the single 5870 card performance is less than the GTX480 in all but 3 games benchmarked. Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
March 27, 201016 yr Author The big question is, how good are Nvidia drivers for FSX in combination with the new GTX480. We don't now yet as there are no benches with FSX and we all know, that the other benches not counts when it comes to FSX. Will find out that in aprox. 14 days. I hope for good performance with high IQ... But i don't expect too much.

Of the gaming benchmarks, while the 5870 in X-Fire mode blows all those cards out of the water, the single 5870 card performance is less than the GTX480 in all but 3 games benchmarked.Yes, but even on the games the 480 did surpass the 5870 it was by an average of less that 16% for a 20% price increase. To me those numbers do not make sense. I am actually really dissapointed after reading that article and perhaps most dissapointed by this:Pricing concerns aside, there are a few solid facts that are not going to change about this card. The GeForce GTX 480 is a power addict in desperate need of some rehab. The card sucked down a whopping 28% more power than to the Radeon HD 5870 under load. Given that it rarely offered a similar performance bump, it's fair to say that the GTX 480 is considerably less efficient. All this power usage results in yet another problem with heat generation. The GTX 480 is one of the hottest -- and noisiest -- graphics card available. In terms of operating temperatures it's able to make even the dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 look rather tame. They were showing 65 degrees idle and near 100 degrees under load... That is a lot of heat to have to dissipate for marginal gains...Just my .02 but I will admit I was hoping for more... Hopefully future reviews will be more favorable as the drivers mature :(-Paul Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
March 28, 201016 yr With no overclocking and all six cores active you won... :( but testing is not over yet :( But good thing is, that unclocked i7 980 X is as fast as my "old" W3580 (=i7 975) at 4400MHz!FSX most uses the first core, as everybody now already, therefore I hope with a decent overclocking, FSX will run better than with i7 975. But not as fast as we hoped I suspect...\You can lower the Fibre Fraction setting in the FSX.cfg file to a lower setting on a 6 core than a 4 core CPU if you want a higher frame rate but want textures to load roughly at the same speed as the 4 core CPU. So in a way more cores can increase FSX performance indirectly if you tweak the Fiber Fraction setting. You will have to add the Fibre Fraction setting if you don't already have it in the FSX.cfg file to take advantage of this tweak.

March 28, 201016 yr Did you turn off hyperthreading in the i7 980X review? Thanks, by the way, for doing this review. Your info has been very helpful.RH
