March 20, 201016 yr Hi,I'm interested in buying the FS9 version of the MD-11. Normally I prefer to buy my addons in the store of the developer so that they don't have to share their well deserved money with all the publishers and dealers. As a side effect the download version is mostly cheaper than the boxed version. So it's a win-win situation for the developer and the customer...at least that's what I thought.Surprisingly the MD-11 box is $10 cheaper as the the download version. And the box has a few more advantages like no online activation, a printed tutorial and no need to back up the files. But I know that the margin is not very high for the developers. I would be very surprised if PMDG gets more than 20% of the box sales price. So I wonder why PMDG doesn't sell the MD-11 for a lower price? Maybe then more people would buy the download version instead of the boxed version and that would mean more money for PMDG. Or have I overlooked something? :( GreetingsTim Greetings Tim My files on Flightsim.to i5 12600K | 32Gb | RTX 4080
March 20, 201016 yr http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=245586I've read somewhere that they will not discuss pricing policy in the forum. Don't overlook the vastness of the distribution that they obtained through the retail channel. That is worth a premium to a small business. As an example, WalMart has an entire staff of buyers who meet with small business showing a product that they hope will make it into the stores. Dan Downs KCRP
March 20, 201016 yr "And the box has a few more advantages like no online activation"..........Big advantage right there. I always buy the boxed version. Don't like to pay for a download if my hard drive goes south. I know, I'm lazy and don't back up but I still like the hard copy disc that I can insert into a new computer anytime I want and know it will work flawlessly.Regards,\jack noulet :(
March 21, 201016 yr Commercial Member The boxed versions validate with our server in exactly the same way the downloaded version does. There's no "advantage" there.Boxed version prices don't get set by us either by the way, they're set by the retailer/publisher in question. March 21, 201016 yr Author Hi Ryan, thanks for your reply :( The boxed versions validate with our server in exactly the same way the downloaded version does. There's no "advantage" there. Are you sure? From what I have read on the Aerosoft website, only the Jetstream box requires online validation. It is absolutely out of question for me that the MD-11 is worth 80 bucks and that PMDG reach a lot of customers with the boxed version. I just thought that PMDG would have an interest to make the high-margin download version more attractive as the boxed version. But obviously that's not the case and that makes me wonder :(GreetingsTim Greetings Tim My files on Flightsim.to i5 12600K | 32Gb | RTX 4080

The MD-11 is a wonderful addon!Tim, You didn't mention how you tested this. The only way to really have pulled off a succesful test is to have made abosute sure you had 0 internet connection when doing so. I know that certain PMDG products work their validation based on taking a type of system spec snapshot (JS41), and have the boxed 747x where it does indeed validate it, but can't speak for the MD-11 but am more prown to take Ryans word for it. i9 10920x @ 4.8 ~ MSI Creator x299 ~ 256 Gb 3600 G.Skill Trident Z Royal ~ EVGA RTX 3090ti ~ Sim drive = M.2 2-TB ~ OS drive = M.2 is 512-gb ~ 5 other Samsung Pro/Evo mix SSD's ~ EVGA 1600w ~ Win 10 Pro Dan Prunier
March 26, 201016 yr Author Hi Dan, The only way to really have pulled off a succesful test is to have made abosute sure you had 0 internet connection when doing so.yes, of course...I have switched off my internet connection prior the installation. I switched it on again after I completed my first test flight. I think Aerosoft - as the publisher of all PMDG boxed versions - should know which of their products requires an online activation. And they clearly state that the PMDG Jetstream is the only one :(GreetingTim Greetings Tim My files on Flightsim.to i5 12600K | 32Gb | RTX 4080
March 28, 201016 yr I also have the 'boxed version' of the MD-11 and can't say that I remember anything about validating it.Regards, jack noulet
November 24, 2025Nov 24 I have the Aerosoft PMDG MD-11 Boxed version. I can confirm 100% that the boxed version does not require online activation. All I required was the serial number! It's wonderful having a physical CD ROM, rather than having the download version ... which can't be activated anymore.
