Had an FSX freeze...read on...

Mitch, after briefly reading thru this post I had been wondering the same thing as Paul, why were you on AS 6.5? Although I dont have as new a system as you and I am still on Win XP 32bit, I started using ASA (ActiveSkyAdvanced) and now am running ASE (ActiveSkyEvolution). I had never tried AS 6.5 on my FSX system or ASX, however running ASA and now ASE I have never had these freezes when the weather engine updates. I am running ASE on another computer and have it networked to my flight sim computer so that maybe one reason. Typically when using ASE or previously ASA, I am flying the LDS 767 or CaptSim 727, with AI at 100% and most of my scenery settings at or near max, and have never had any freeze issues or performance issues like you mention, and I have antique hardware.I agree that its too bad you cant buy ASE/ASA thru Flight1 with the refund policy, but considering how much you have already spent, maybe another few dollars to try ASE might not be a bad idea. I cant see how with all its new features and improvements you wouldn't like it more than AS 6.5 anyway.Edit: Didn't see your last post while I was writting mine. Hope that in your latest post you got it figured out.
I am paused in a flight with FSX, and will see if having an FS9 FSUIPC .dll in the A.S. 6.5 Root folder (installed by A.S. setup, I gather...) was the cause. I put an 4.xx FSX FSUIPC .dll in the A.S. Root folder and then tried FS9. It didn't seem to mess up FS9's use with A.S. 6.5 , so fired up FSX and will be testing that. If it still freezes, then most likely I will just pick up ASE and hope that fixes things. I know that there are still a lot of guys and gals that are using, or trying to....A.S. 6.5 on both platforms. I hope that I can report to merely swap out the FS9 dedicated, for the FSX one. I hope it will be that simple...Thanks for your input, and to all on this thread. All helps!Mitch

Did you fix it?
I only could fly 10 minutes before I had to shut down for time constraint. The freeze usually shows up when it does about the 1/2-3/4 time frame. I'm going to take another 1 hour flight and see what happens. If I don't have any more freezes in about a week, I'd say that the FS9 .dll was the cause.Unless someone corrects me...I guess that if you fire up A.S. 6.5's GUI before running FSX, or FS9, Active Sky seeks out the FSUIPC file within its own root folder, and stays with that version for the rest of its session. That certainly could explain why myself and others have been getting app hang ups when using it with FSX. If this is not the case, why would any version of FSUIPC be in the root folder?!?Anyway, I'm now running with the latest FSX version in the root and will see if that corrects/eliminates the hang. I'll report back one way or the other. Having an FSX 4.xx FSUIPC version and also running FS9, didn't seem to give FS9 any gas......lol. Post Edit: No Joy. Swapping out the FS9 FUSIPC.dll for an FSX did not stop another freeze about half an hour into the flight. Back to square one....

Bit the bullet and now own ASE. Will remove FSUIPC as not needed by EZdok, or ASE. Will use SimConnect. I hope this stops my freeze issue. Quick question for anyone having ASE. If you want REX2 Extreme to create the clouds, what do you have to do in initial set up? Do you have to deactivate any graphics function within ASE? If so, how?Mitch

Well, I have been flying around for about two hours with no crashes or hangs. This is what I did:I uninstalled my latest FSUIPC.dll file from the Modules folder. I then purchased ASE (Evolution, HiSoft's latest)I ran the installer and set up the program to what I felt I wanted in options, and then fired up FSX.I don't know if my FSX freeze ups were from running Active Sky 6.5 (a program written for use in FS9 and not FSX), which might not have been totally compatible with the FSUIPC file version needed for FSX. I don't know. I only know that because I am not using either Active Sky 6.5, or any version of FSUIPC as ASE runs with SimConnect, I have no more freeze ups of FSX. It runs as smooth as all get out, now.I can't tell the reader if it was one of those programs that I mentioned, or working as a combination of both to cause FSX to freeze up after about 1/2 hour of usage, but in taking both out of the loop, solved my issues. ASE seems to be quite a nice upgrade from AS 6.5 and I'll now work to get familiar with its GUI and features sets.I have asked if you need to do anything to make it compatible with also using REX2, but have had no response to date on this thread, or on the Hi Soft forum. I'm hoping to get an answer soon though! :)In closing this thread...as it is now redundant, if you also have freezing issues and are running Active Sky 6.5...perhaps try not using it, run FSX's weather engine and see if you have issues still. If so, then remove FSUIPC from the MODULES folder and try the FSX weather engine again. If that cures your freeze issues...you have then nailed what it is. I then suggest you grab ASE as it was written for FSX and uses SimConnect, which is native code to FSX.Thanks to all who offered suggestions. The end result was a successful resolution.Mitch

Glad to see you got it fixed. I am really happy with ASE myself and never had any problems with it, plus I think that out of all the HiFi weather programs I have used so far, ASE does the best job with depicting the actual weather when compared to what I actually see outside. Even though I own REX I have never tried its weather engine, mainly just because I am so happy with ASE.Now that you have used both 6.5 and ASE on FSX, does ASE do a better job in depicting the weather than 6.5 did?

Now that you have used both 6.5 and ASE on FSX, does ASE do a better job in depicting the weather than 6.5 did?----------------------------------------------------------------Yes it does, as a matter of fact. Fog, mist, etc is much better portrayed at or near ground level. A.S. 6.5 does do a good job though, if you already own it, and can get it to work stable with FSX.

Hello Bob,Bob, I have already run through elimination, and have only used weather gen within FSX. No hangs. Ok...but when you add on back into the mix...you can't truly cause and effect with total isolation anything that needs an interpreter such as FSUIPC. Now...FSUIPC connects to FSX through SimConnect, is that not right? So let's say that I found by NOT running Active Sky 6.5, I get no further freezes. But, is that truly the cause, or by not running it, does FUSIPC go dormant, and perhaps a finger should be pointing to FSUIPC working with W7? How can you not run FUSIPC, when you need to for any other associate program layered on? I guess that is the problem. Who knows if FUSIPC even has a part in this? Either you don't use anything that needs a shell entry....or perhaps we can figure this out. Perhaps it is also as another posted, that the memory manager of W7 just doesn't do the trick, and by my ending Active Sky, it off-loads so as to allow FSX to run once more. It's of course not about finger pointing...but in finding out exactly WHY this happens, and can there be a work around, or outright patch/fix?Mitch
I wish I could help as far as FSUIPC, but I do use it with no issues. Although FSUIPC has grown over the years, and many new features have been added, the author has been great about fixing issues. Personally I don't think FSUIPC is the issue. Am I sure? No not 100%. As far as Active Sky, I had many issues with the product when it was first released, and gave it up as I thought it was too agressive with what it was trying to attempt. Not sure where the product is now as far as bugs though. If you use it with weather generation etc, I would try to turn that functionality off and see if the problem goes away. RegardsBob

POST CALLED "For all forum members---FYI, important read! " (...) MERGED BY ADMINMitch, for the VERY last time I beg you to stop opening a new thread almost everyday about the same item..... This last topic you opened today is nothing but the conclusion of this thread, thus I'm merging them. Two days ago you opened a thread called "Well, glad that my freeze problem 'forced' me to U/G" and I locked it for the same reason...Three days ago it was "Do you have to disable anything within ASE for REX2?", about your freeze issue as well.....Please understand that this is very disturbing and I ask you to respect the forum consistency.Thanks!And.. don't worry, we will read you!! :--)))David RochIf anybody has been following some of my recent posts, they are aware that I had developed a situation whereby FSX would run for about half an hour, and then FSX's animation would freeze while the sound continued playing. If you waited xxx number of minutes, it would of itself seemingly unfreeze and carry on, with another freeze later on,... or no freeze at all. This was most disruptive and frustrating as I had never had this issue with VISTA 64 bit.Well...about two months ago, I upgraded from VISTA 64 bit Ultimate to W7 of the same ilk. I also had to wait for my virus program to be upgraded to run with W7. When it did, that was when I then did the upgrade. When thinking back, I now see that it was at that time that I started getting this weird freeze of FSX. I know that other members also started complaining of a freeze up situation where for themselves non had also existed. So what happened to myself and them?I tried as they did, to locate the source of this freeze, by seeing what was running in the background, etc. I thought that perhaps my use of add-on external programs; at that time, Active Sky 6.5/FSUIPC combo etc MIGHT have been responsible by W7 (they worked fine under Vista) not playing nice with them. I would feel that I had figured it out...and then run a few clean flights but ultimately with the freeze happening again. Same for them....Two days ago, thinking it might be actually A.V. 6.5 and FSUIPC in conflict with FSX under W7, I bought A.S. Evolution (btw..a fine upgrade from AS 6.5!) and thought that with a few clean episodes under my belt...that indeed it was AS 6.5/FSUIPC that was affecting my FSX under W7. Well...no joy...this morning I had a freeze while running ASE. Ok...so it wasn't AS 6.5/FSUIPC as they were totally out of the loop with FSUIPC removed from the MODULES folder. I started 'tearing' my software apart....(you don't want to know...and don't ask..lol) and FINALLY found what was screwing up FSX, and it was not ANY flight simulation software that I had installed. It came down to a feature of the new for W7 version of my anti-virus and firewall. My anti-virus has a feature called DEEP GUARD which in real-time scans each and every process call that is happening to match against known signatures, etc. I always had it running under the VISTA version of the program. Obviously something is handled differently in the W7 version. I turned off the DEEP GUARD feature of my anti-virus and not ONLY did I pick up 2-5 FPS, but have had no freeze-up issues since. I have flown for hours as a test, with no CTD's or animation freeze. It was really using a good measure of system resources and probably its probing of the executing code of FSX was interfering with perhaps thread execution, etc.So, I want to absolutely make clear that Active Sky 6.5, FSUIPC, ASE, and any other flight simulation program I might have mentioned in my quest for the offending software and/or reason for the freezes be absolved of any complicity. It was a single feature of my anti-virus/firewall that was causing the W7/FSX animation freezes. I felt it was very important to give this FYI as so not to cause any other members reason to not buy, or to continue to use the software that I had mentioned in my quest for a final fix and resolution. I wish that somebody could have just whispered in my ear...to turn off the DEEP GUARD heuristic function when FSX was in session. But like a wiring fault on your car...it takes hours and hours to sleuth and find...but seconds to correct after the 'short' is located!Cheers!Mitch

Please, could you disclose the name of your av software?Harry

I run XP SP2 on my PC with FSX - nothing else. I don't run anti-virus/firewall nor do I update anything on that install ie windows updates etcKeeping everything constant apart from video drivers means that I don't have any problems with random/intermittent hangups which have never surfaced before. If I do I know its most likely due to a recent gfx driver update or an addon that I recently installed etcI recommend this where possible as it saves a lot of faffing around. I run 2 hds, 1 with xp64 sp2 and 1 with the FSX/addons.

------------------------------------------------With all respect, I'd rather not. If you do have a function called 'DEEP GUARD', and you ALSO have freeze issues, then I suggest you merely turn it off (when in an FSX session) and see if that resolves your FSX issue. You can then easily turn that feature (if you have it) back on for all other computer usage.

A search with Google gave the name F-Secure DeepGuard.EDITED: I've previously used three different anti virus programs (McAfee, Norton and F-Secure) and had problems with them. I've never had any problems with ESET NOD32, which is an excellent anti virus program.

Even with ESET Nod32, you should use the "Exclude" function of the program to stop "Real Time File Scanning" for any FSX-related folders. This not only includes your main FSX installation folder, but any other folders for programs you may use in conjunction with FSX...Weather Generators (ASX\ASE, REX), ATC addons (Radar Contact, etc), Flight Planners\Moving Maps (FlightSim Commander, etc)...whatever. Also any folders that you may have created outside the main FSX directory that contain scenery addons you are linking to FSX via the Scenery Library.Generally, if you are using any files in\for FSX, you don't want your AV program to be "realtime" scanning them. I've also been using Nod32 with absolutely no problems while FSX is running, using the proper "Excludes" for the appropriate folders\files. Note I've helped MANY friends who experience FSX "microstutters" and "pauses" eliminate both problems by JUST making sure their AV program is NOT scanning their FSX files in "realtime". No other FSX "tweaks" were needed...and they did NOT have to completely disable their entire AV application while running FSX.
