AFCAD2 question

Featured Replies

Hi. Can anyone tell me where the AFCAD2 (Lee Swordy) apron textures (e.g. gravel, tarmac, macadam etc. etc.) are stored in FS9? I can't find, for instance, any file that could be the 'macadam' option...Thanks,Martin

I believe you find that the file in question is named taxi_macadam.bmp and is in your Flight Simulator 9\Texture subfolder. That along with the recommended thread should be helpful.

Thanks for the replies! Yes, very helpful.I found taxi_asphalt, taxi_concrete etc. but no macadam, so I assumed I was looking in the wrong place. Maybe I just mistyped the search string.. I'll have another look.Do you know if it is possible to add other customised textures to the AFCAD2 'apron repertoire'? I have a number of textures called 'unknown' too.Martin(The other thread implies they are hard coded, so maybe adding others would not be possible).

No, they cannot be added - as others have pointed out, they are hard coded. I have suggested to the folks who created ADE 9X that having a few "user defined" textures available would be a great addition to their program. I have no idea if they will follow up on that suggestion or not.

I lobbed the same suggestion at the AFX folks! The race is on...I have been a little slack about following up on this thought, busy with other stuff. But if the scenery gurus don't do something, I may still have a further play...

Is this allowing for extra apron textures in the Simulator rather than in the design tool? In ADE for example apron surface colors are user definable, However this does not affect the sim itself where the textures are hard coded. So I guess the requirement is to add more textures in the Sim?

Most folk have upgraded their sim textures with things like photoreal grass and so on.The original set of AFCAD textures (taxi_grass_su.bmp etc etc in the main texture folder) now look a little old.The thinking was that if there were a set of say 6 different texture files available for taxi_grass_su.bmp (and each of the other AFCAD texture files) then each user could select one which worked best in that particular sim setup. It's obviously not an ideal solution, as each user has to pick a bmp to suit the entire world of AFCADs.I had thought perhaps a small batch file with a GUI would be of help. So you'd say "OK I am in the tropics, please make my AFCAD colours look a little tropical; grass a little greener and coarser-grained, check. Water a little turquoise, check. Sand a little whiter, check."When they'd been selected from a pick-list showing the sim colours you'd be getting: Click...done.There might even be suggested Themes with a combination of textures.

Not quite what I was trying to say.If I draw a polygon in ADE and want to fill it with a texture, the only choices I see are the old Afcad textures - macadam, coral, grass, asphalt etc. What I was hoping could be done was to have several more "user defined" choices available on that menu. The user would of course have to "create" or find his or her own textures and somehow name them so ADE could use them. Not sure how that might be done but that was my idea.Obviously this would be for the use of the user only as a "shared" result would have to include the user defined textures which might have been used also.

Yes that would be great if user-defined textures could be added to the choices available!I had assumed the hard-coding of the existing ones precluded that.Let's bring that picture in here for clarity:So if they are hard-coded, one could perhaps "customize" some of the little-used textures, which seem to be:SteelPlanksSandIt doesn't offer a great deal more flexibility is all, so hence the idea of offering a suite of modified existing ones.

Yes, that is what I was after too. I did try replacing one of the standard bitmaps (taxiway_coral, which is rarely used it seems to me) with one of my own, naming it as the original of course, but it didn't work. For some reason my bmp didn't show (I edited it to DXT1, as the other files). Well, no matter, it was just an experiment.Martin

If you named it taxiway_coral.bmp and it did not work, that it because it should be named taxi_coral.bmp.If you did name it correctly and it did not show, what did you see instead?regards,Joe

Not sure what went astray with what you tried Martin, but I have used that technique several times. The way I have used it was to take a little used taxi_????.bmp (such as coral or shale) and replaced it with a bmp of a parking lot with cars. Then in afcad I have drawn a polygon where I wanted the parking lot to be and used shale or coral as the texture. Works like a charm.I did not "invent" that idea - think I first saw it in an offerring by Sidney Schwartz but I am not positive about that. In any case it does work.
