July 11, 201015 yr Let me see, pay for a round of golf....or.....buy a new FTX airport. Ah heck, I'll do both, on round one airport.Love the full emersion, actually felt like I was really, really in a GA plane landing there. Bryan Wallis aka "fltsimguy" Maple Bay, British Columbia Near CAM3
July 11, 201015 yr It's nearly impossible to make everybody happy. Even in this thread, you've got Hondabuff commenting that he wishes we would stop focusing on so many off-field details and do the stuff you can see from a plane, while J van E hasn't bought 7S3 specifically because I didn't do enough off-airport modeling. From the reception the Orbx fields have had, I'd say there's a sizable number of people who are looking for nice, high-detail GA airports, so I reckon we'll just go on producing them. One thing I'm not sure about is the modeling of towns sited near the airports. Originally, my thought was that anything that's not reachable by plane (at least not legally :( ) was sort of overkill. I like a nice patch of high-res aerial ground blended into the background, but I never tended to do much modeling of specific buildings that weren't on or very near the airport. However, it seems that this is one of the favorite features of scenery like Darrington or Concrete, so I might have to consider adding them to upcoming projects. In the case of Stark's Twin Oaks, there is not town there, just miles of farmland and orchards, which I took pains to re-create.Would it be hijacking this thread to ask how people feel about paying extra for details like fully modeled towns that you can only really see with a bloke like Bob? I smell a blog poll coming on...I feel bad for bringing up your project everytime I talk about what I like and what I don't like as much when it comes to Orbx addon airports... It always seems to be me who says it. I really do feel a bit guilty about that, specially since I know you indeed took pains to re-create everything in detail! But the thing is that right now 7S3 is the only one of its kind (for PNW anyway, I don't own any AU addon airports), meaning it's the only one with not that much (obvious!) off-airport stuff. I really hope you understand I am not trying to put your project down!!! It's great and awesome as it is, but yes, I am the kind of guy that likes (obvious) off-airport modeling! So... I am quite happy and excited to see you are thinking about adding this to your upcoming projects!!! Because it may be obvious to everyone that you really are one of the best developers out there (I'm not saying this in a bootlicking way (is that the right word...? I had to Google for it... :( ): you are one of he most well known guys in the business and I would love to see your next product being done with a lot of off-airport modelling (which obviously (do I use that word too much...? :( ) will influence the choice of the airport which is going to be modelled: as you said, you can't add much off-airport stuff to 7S3). And btw I DID buy 7S3. B) And I am sure I will visit it a LOT more often when the upcoming Portland scenery will be released. (I really love it when specific regions get a treatment, just like the valley around Concrete (WA56 > Concrete > Darrington and Skagit in the future: I think Portland will also become a great region to in the future, although I am more into rural area's.)
July 11, 201015 yr I like enough off airport modelling to make it look good as I try to land. I'm not too worried about what Main Street looks like (unless the landing is really bad). One problem I do have with the Orbx stuff is that they don't support DX10. They do make this clear, and in most cases it doesn't make much difference.Unfortunately the flowers and grass at Israel's Farm look like sheets of cardboard stuck in the ground in DX10.DX10 generally works good for me and with the latest drivers it's looking even better.End of moan, back to flying in PNW.

In the case of Stark's Twin Oaks, there is not town there, just miles of farmland and orchards, which I took pains to re-create.I LOVE the townships and I barely touched Bob (okay, that didn't sound right, but you know what I mean! :( ). Just seeing a town like it really is, even if it's only from final approach or from the pattern, really makes you feel like you're actually there. It's micro details like that, which you may only take in subconsciously, that sell the illusion and break the barrier between the virtual and the real world. On top of that I'm an avid helicopter jockey and detailed townships like that make for the ideal playground for VERY low flying and hovering practice. I LOVE townships (hm, I think I said that already) and I must say that the lack of a nice township is one of the reasons why Twin Oaks got less attention from me than it actually deserves. It's a beautiful airport! The other reason is that I made Darrington my home base, because of it's beautiful mountain location which just makes for a more dramatic and interesting backdrop. Don't get me wrong though, I really like what you have done and you certainly did a great job with Twin Oaks.

July 11, 201015 yr Commercial Member Thanks for the reinforcement, guys. When I built Twin Oaks, I had in the back of my mind that it wouldn't be as popular as some other airports for the exact reasons you cited; it's not near a quaint little town, and it's not nestled up against dramatic mountains. Then again, some pretty stunning mountain scenery is just across the Willamette river - twenty minutes away by air ;). Such is life when you choose a labor of love over popularity. I found source photos on my computer dating back to 2003, the first time I considered modeling this little gem of an airport for FS. I'm just happy to have finally gotten it done and out into the wild. Fortunately, it's been popular enough to keep my smiling as I work on the next project. heh.Oh, and J van E... don't stress about it, bud. I know you're not coming down on me personally. I'll give you some more Oregon airports to check out soon. And/or you can use a wonderful program called FenceBuilder Pro that will help with the sound stuff. Its a lot of fun adding all sorts of sound effects, especially ambient sounds in and around airports. Bryan Wallis aka "fltsimguy" Maple Bay, British Columbia Near CAM3
July 13, 201015 yr Found something that made getting around PNW towns a little easier. Now I see why there is so much detail around the towns. FTX needs to offer this instead of BOB. http://www.fs-freeware.net/flight-simulato...4-Lexus-LS430./
