PMDG 747-400 pax A few years back with more time on my hands and brand new to Vatsim I decided to fly online from LA to Frankfurt overnight (10hrs) Around 7am after quite a few pizza's, movies, fuel checks and anything else to keep me sane & awake I'm happily cruising at FL410 approaching the Dutch coast, I see a small dot on the horizon and then a TCAS alert followed by TRAFFIC TRAFFIC and a red square on my PFD. I was so confused and tired that I didn't have time to react and smashed into back of United 747-400. I ended up staring at a blank screen for 5 minutes in disbelief that I had stayed up all night and wasted 9 hours lol I still couldn't figure out how we had collided until I checked servinfo, it turns out the other pilot had flown from JFK overnight but gone to sleep and used pause at top of descent! So he was sitting there paused slap bang in the middle of a high altitude airway! I guess that's as close as you can get to to another aircraft.Learnt the hardway 'turn of crash detection when online'Regards

In my early days of FS9, as I was flying a 747 to frankfurt, i smashed head on with a learjet above holland... crash detection was off. Also in my early days, as I was flying the default 777, I was crossed by another 747 while enroute to chicago..Good ol' times.

Shouldn't the TCAS TA/RA setting prevent you from climbing up the tail of another plane? I swear I've had the queen and/or the MD-11 trun me out of the way.

Doug - I did get a resolution advisory, it only tells you to Climb/Descend or adjust vertical speed (Not turn)- we where both heading east at FL410 except I was traveling at 500kts and he was 0 knots! Trust me it would confuse anyone if they where approaching another aircraft from 'behind' at that speed. I'm surprised at the amount of TCAS resolution advisories you get over Europe in Vatsim, you would think that since traffic is nowhere near as dense as the real world you would get most of the sky to yourself, yet I seem to get at least one conflict on every trip. Another problem is the accuracy of our FMC's unless we use offsets we're all bang on the magenta line. I remember flying from Dubai to Heathrow, over Iran I was watching over pilots passing overhead in the opposite direction 1000ft above and we would be perfectly aligned on the airway. Great fun tho

well as close as my crj came, my tcas was like 'traffic alert! climb!' but didnt do anything, and i just flew through its jetstream :(

Sounds like fun!The closest I came to opposite direction traffic was 300 ft. He crossed immeditely behind me. I messaged him but no response so I guess another snoozing pilot at the controls. :DBest regards,Robin.

I once passed at about 20 ft from a 757 on VATSIM. It was my first flight using NATs and I didn't understand the whole idea of different times for directions... I ended up going on the wrong way...

I was once making a approach into RJBB and TCAS called traffic I look down and got the RA. Before I had any chance of reacting it passed off my 10nm set ND in a blink of an eye. That plane must have been flying at Mach 5! Stange AI bug.

Sometimes, to make my short-radius landing circuits more er... interesting, I don't turn off AI traffic, with the result that I very frequently perform go-rounds, complete with pucker-inducing narrow misses, muahaha ha !Tony

Best regards from Tony, at the helm of the flying desk.

I was on the Queen on final for the 19R of Arlanda (ESSA), and the AI controller told me to watch for an Piper that was already on final for the same runway. About 500 AGL, I saw the tiny aircraft right beside me, getting out of base. Naturally I overtook it, but at about 60-50 AGL the controller called "Go Around". I think these AI bloopers help us train these unusual situations. What is strange is that sometimes the controller forget about you, keeps you heading for a long time away from the airport, and then just say "You getting out of my coverage. Squawk 1200."

On Vatsim, at SFO, and was under unicom. I was taking off on the appropriate runway for the winds, 19R if I remember correctly, and as I was taking off, low and behold, TCAS starts to scream. Why? Because some yahoo who wasnt using unicom was trying to land the runway opposite in a massive tailwind. Had to pull a hard turn to get off of runway heading to avoid him. Messed up my whole planned departure. Dont do Vatsim much these days do to annoying incidents such as this.
