anyone have an Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition for there fsx? and how is it?

I own that chip. It is a good chip but it is not the FSX answer.Maybe, in a few more years we will see the answer.Until then fs9 all the way.System specs Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition Gulftown 3.33GHz Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B CPU Cooler G.SKILL Trident 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Triple Channel ASRock X58 Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard (fs9/fsx and windows xp pro 32 bit sp3) Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MH160G2R5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)(back up) Intel X25-V SSDSA2MP040G2R5 2.5" 40GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Radeon HD 5870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Power color HD 5870 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Creative 70SB073A00000 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Acer GD235HZbid Black/orange 23.6" 2ms Widescreen 1080p 120Hz NVIDIA 3D Vision LCD Monitor Diablotek PHD Series PHD750 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply

Amazing. OC it like mine, stick a top end nvidia card in (less issues), low timing high speed ram, an SSD and you are all the way. FSX has never been this good.

i read about people overclocking the chip at 4.0ghz - 4.5ghz and get 30 - 60 fps and keeping HT turned off in bios

I highly doubt 4.5GHz. A bit extreme. However at 3.8, all sliders to the right and PMDG MD-11, I get 30+ FPS.

4.43ghz on air is about max - 4.5 is doable with liquid cooling.I fly with 30 - 60fps set depending on areas - smooth and easy!Vic

You need to seriously overclock yours... No stock CPU is going to be "the chip" for FSX unless its OCed!Thats why the OP should get a i7 950 for about 1/3 the price and overclock it to 4.0+ GHz

Let's see, Intel i7-980 6-core extreme at 3.3GHz. is $1,000.00 bucks then overclock to 4Ghz. for decent FSX performance. AMD Phenom II 6-core is at 3.2Ghz. is $ 299.00 bucks then overclock to 4GHz. for decent FSX performance. 4GHz. = 4GHz.Take $700 savings and buy a top end graphics card, couple of 1080p screens, new cockpit hardware, etc.,... you get the idea. ;)

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

Yup, I wish I went that route

WRONG!! A 980x is much more powerful at 4GHz than the AMD. Hence the price difference. First of the 980x uses the 1366 architecture, whilst the AMD is on the old AM3. 980x supports HT and turbo boost (not necessarily used). 980x combines with tri channel memory, whilst AMD is only dual channel. The AMD at 4GHz is the equivelant of an i7 920 at 4GHz.

Exactly! 4 gigs does not always = 4 gigs...

Sounds like, I own a pretty good chip

Yes. The 980x is THE best chip around and AMD's X6 will never ever match it.

It's a good chip.If you end up getting a good cherry chip, you can clock upwards of 4.5+ GHz within safe voltages. I got a ###### poor chip that eats volts and hates overclocking. You win some, you lose some. See if you can buy a cherry off of someone from forums like Overclockers net or something if you really want it. The boost you'll get will be awesome at 4.5 - 5 GHz.

4.41 on air and you mean to tell me your chip is a poor OCer? hahaha. Come one, you have a very nice clock there :)
