September 20, 201015 yr Author Thanks, I am hoping it is good enough to run not only PMDG but REX, GEX, UT2, an assortment of addon scenery, FSC, and ASE all at the same time...lol Jeff BaumgartnerASUS Rampage II Extreme, i7 980x Gulftown OC @ 4.06Ghz,6GB Tri Channel, GTX 480 Fermi2x100GB SSD Hard Drives, Antec 1200 PSU, Corsair Hydro H50 Win7 64bit, FSX, AS2012, FSC, FTXG, PMDG-744, 748i, 744 LCF. September 20, 201015 yr I would consider getting some 2000 MHz RAM. It's nice to have given the way the i7's overclock. You overclock by a system multiplier that overclocks your RAM and Northbridge too. The RAM overclock starts from the 1333 MHz of the bus, so if you have 2000 MHz RAM, you have quite a bit of comfort on your RAM for overlcocking. The CPU and Northbridge have not been an issue for most overlcockers, so just make sure your RAM is set. Eric Szczesniak
September 20, 201015 yr Author ok, thanks all, I'll take both of those into consideration Jeff BaumgartnerASUS Rampage II Extreme, i7 980x Gulftown OC @ 4.06Ghz,6GB Tri Channel, GTX 480 Fermi2x100GB SSD Hard Drives, Antec 1200 PSU, Corsair Hydro H50 Win7 64bit, FSX, AS2012, FSC, FTXG, PMDG-744, 748i, 744 LCF. September 20, 201015 yr Nice Setup, but you should consider 12 GB 6GB seems a little bit low for that setup :( best regards, Alexander Barger
September 20, 201015 yr Author Nice Setup, but you should consider 12 GB 6GB seems a little bit low for that setup :(Even with it being triple channel? September 20, 201015 yr I am anything but an expert, but perhaps you should look into ssd's, as they are superior (from what I understand) to velociraptors in both speed and reliability, and you do not have to worry about using only half the available space.Good luck, and from what I have seen posted around the place, your system at overclocked at 4.2 with the tweaks available is as good as you can get.Let us know your final choice though. September 20, 201015 yr Author I should know what my system can do around mid november, have to get back home to my beast, and see what it can do with the upgrades Jeff BaumgartnerASUS Rampage II Extreme, i7 980x Gulftown OC @ 4.06Ghz,6GB Tri Channel, GTX 480 Fermi2x100GB SSD Hard Drives, Antec 1200 PSU, Corsair Hydro H50 Win7 64bit, FSX, AS2012, FSC, FTXG, PMDG-744, 748i, 744 LCF. September 20, 201015 yr That's why I was saying 12Gb (2x3x2GB Kits should fit into the Motherboard)With this, you can you two times the trible channel effect best regards, Alexander Barger
September 20, 201015 yr Your system is close to mine, you have the newer processor and I ditched my 285 for a 480 Fermi, and my system runs PMDG 744 with REX, ASE with tons of cloud layers (max or close to max, i dont remember), UT2, UTX, GEX, and FSDT airports with very good frame rates. You will be very pleased with that system's performance. September 20, 201015 yr I would go with the Asus Rampage III LGA 1366 motherboard instead. Christopher Edwards
September 20, 201015 yr That's why I was saying 12Gb (2x3x2GB Kits should fit into the Motherboard)With this, you can you two times the trible channel effect6GB is plenty for FSX, and 12GB will only increase the chance of instability of the RAM while overclocking (more sticks = higher chance of bad memory). I have 6GB of Mushkin Redline 1600Mhz triple channel memory, and my FSX Acceleration install with REX, UTX, GEX, UT2, Audio Environment, FSDreamteam airports, FlyTampa airports, Manhattan X, PMDG, Captain Sim, FSLabs, Level D, VRS, RealAir, FeelThere/Wilco, and Leonardo aircraft runs very nice. I have never had an issue with running out of memory, and I don't think I ever really use much more than 4 GB of memory flying in FSX. Shane Gavin
September 20, 201015 yr Well, FSX wouldnt be able to address more than 4 gigs of memory anyways, as it is a 32 bit application.
