iFLY vs. PMDG?

Featured Replies

And if you read everything in context in this thread I've went above and beyond to clarify my position even in this sentence. The second part states "I didn't have that climb to altitude experience when I flew the Level-D sim". That's why I told you to read everything I've stated in this thread and not stay stuck on a mis-perception of where I'm at (I will say it looks like I didn't do a good job in stating where I'm at :( ). I've clarified things with Steve over at iFly before this thread was started with much of what I wrote above. Clarification again:On initial climb out the iFly bird seems right the way it is now. As it climbs to altitude you shouldn't be able to achieve a climb rate of 2800fpm at 32,000ft with a full load. That's where the problem is. Taking off of KMDW or KLGA the current iFly model lift's off like Ryan stated above or in the case of KLGA the video below... I know we can't go on videos alone but this was my experience in the NG sim. This real world video is of a real 737NG taking off from KLGA. No we don't know the load but it's apparent the NG is no slouch. The climb rate is steep as soon as the wheels leave the runway.
Dillon, you stated earlier, you were trying to takeoff from KMDW with Flaps 5, which is fine for longer runways, but shouldn't you be setting Flaps 15 for a runway as short as KMDW? I've watched a number of videos of SW 737's taking off from KMDW, and they seem to all use that flap setting. The video above from KLGA also looks like it's set to Flap 15.

Thanks

Tom

Nice kids, Les!I guess I know what they will be doing when they grow up.... :biggrin:If my father had done THIS to me when I was a kid, I'd most probably have my office at FL350 today.Oh, did I also say: nice 744 sim? Great! If one day I become ten times richer than I am today, I'll make something like this at home.

Cool pics from the sim Les. BTW, up until a few days ago I always thought your first name was Dillon until I noticed it was Les in your iFly sig.Are your kids interested in flying and do they or the older of the two fly FS9 with you?
They are a little indifferent about the whole thing. Tyler is more into toys these days where as when I was young aviation was my main thing.

I've used both with the PMDG 737NG. What I found with the PMDG version if you use more than flaps 5 when you get off the ground the bird struggles to gain speed. By contrast in the NG Level-D sim it flew off the runway like this video as the iFly model does now. Out of KATL in the Level-D sim I took off with flaps 5 and was climbing out at 3,000fpm initially. I had full fuel tanks in the wings and the center tank was 75% full. My passenger/cargo load was half (whatever that means) as the instructor had all this setup before hand. The point is the NG in the Level-D sim gave me what you see in the video and that was my point about the iFly model as it is today. Next time I go (whenever that is) I'll climb from sea level to about 35,000ft and see how long it takes me. I'm sure like all airliners as you get higher you can't climb as good as you can at lower altitudes. This is what has to be addressed with the iFly model. At 35,000ft your pushing it to be able climb at 1000fpm.

If you become richer than you are today all I can say is don't forget about us little people. I'd pay to rent time in your simulator. Flying these things are a blast. I'm with you if I had the money I'd have on in my house using FSX or FS9 as the scenery engine (many of the Level-D simulator's graphics are bad compared to what we have on our desktops). The downside to having your own Level-D sim is you relegated to one bird. We have variety in FSX/FS9. If the choice had to be made I'd choose the BBJ.

Now let's move on.I hope one of those things is an FS9 version... :( Ryan for my part in this I apologize to you guys for stiring the pot. Yes I'm ticked you guys have left FS9 and yes I stand on the fact that for me the PMDG NG seemed to have trouble with getting out of KMDW or should I say shorter runways like KBUR. I've read post by others on this but it's water under the bridge. There are no more updates coming for the original NG and their shouldn't be with the NGX around the corner. We need not go on about this because you guys have left FS9 and the only option for those of us that still use the sim is to make the iFly the best it can be. In the FS9 world there is no competition when it comes to the NG so all this is irrelevant. When 'Flight' comes around I'll buy your work then and enjoy that version of Flight Simulator if it's any good...
That video contains a roar not really simulated in FS. Also contains the medium pitch 'air sound' (the main sound) which is not simulated much if at all in FS even in Payware products.Did some of you guys say that there is an engine update for the 747-400 by Ifly?

To me as you know these is very controversial. No such thing as idiotic comments. I really prefer ifly exterior wings and model over pmdg. But I really prefer pmdg FMC functions and interior model rather than ifly. Everybody has a different way of seeing certain eyecandy. I have both. The only reason I don't use ifly is because I can never see the runway. I know people can tell me to adjust by using Shift+Enter. Its just not the same. Ifly is not a waste of time. But its all about how you use it and what you can and can't tolerate.

Not sure why you chose to resurrect a very old thread Darien but the FS9  IFly 737 is leap years ahead of the FS9 PMDG 737. Not sure why you would prefer the PMDG FMC functions as the iFly FMC is as real as it gets. The aircraft is also capable of conducting DMC arc and RNP approaches. The PMDG model has not been updated for years and is not capable of those approaches.

Cheers
