Strange FPS in 2D panel view (default panels)

Featured Replies

HiI am affected by this strange effect which was reported and discussed in this forum and also others. Some people seem to have it, some not and for some the following entry in the Fs9.cfg file helps (under the display entry):TextureAGP=0 <------------------------- Add this linePanelAsTexture=0 <--------------------- Add this lineThis did not help me, as the drop of FPS in 2D panel view is even worse (like to 8-10 FPS) while I have without this entry maybe 12-14 FPS on an average default airport. In all other views (side views, no panel view, spot plane view, VC) I have at the same location 22-24 FPS (my fps are limited at 24).Now I observed a very strange thing: I flew in real weather with the default Cessna 172 and there were quite a lot of clouds. I flew between two laysers. Suddenly I noticed that I had the same FPS with and without panel (around 12 fps). The fps in all the views had dropped from over 20 fps because of the many clouds, however, in the panel view the seem to have stayed stable (as with no clouds). I would have expected that they should have dropped well below 10.This is completely mysterious to me and I have no idea what's wrong with my 2D panel view in nice weather conditions.Any ideas based on these findings?Walter

I can only tell you I see something similar. If I "tax" the system with more clouds, or a higher screen res, the difference between panel/no panel becomes smaller. It may have something to do with the way MSFS prioritizes certain tasks...-John

Hi all,ok, now who can help us? I have the same problem. Without panel I fps going up to 30-40 fps. When I press the "W" key to popup the panel, the fps drop to 10-12!! This with a GF4 wit 128 RAM?Not possible hein? That's what I think also.Anyone have a clue? The fps are good (20-25 fps) when I run the sim in "windowed" mode, in the cockpit with 2D panel on. When I go to full screen it drops immediately to 10-12fps..

The default clouds in FS2004 are serious frame rate killers. When you fly through a lot of clouds, good luck! The best thing to do is use Chris Willis' replacement textures. They help a lot, and I have a fast computer.Lee

yes indeed, they are. But this has nothing to do with the clouds. This happens with the panel, with clear skies (or foggy which should give you fps boost normally due to reduced visibilty).attached you'll see what I mean:http://users.pandora.be/vital.vanbeginne/i...S/no2Dpanel.jpghttp://users.pandora.be/vital.vanbeginne/i.../FS/2Dpanel.jpg

I've got the exact same issues. Doesn't seem to be caused by clouds, or anything really. Just the fact that in ANY situation the 2D panel gets much lower framerates than any other view...

I also have the same issue, not so drastic.. but maybe 5-10 fps drop in 2d.. its weird even VC is faster then 2d

Yes I thought i was the only one with this problem..in 2D panel mode my FPS are up and down like a yoyo! even in dark situations with no buildings etc. But in spot view with a very complicated a/c such as the PMDG 737 or PSS 330/340 i get great FPS at all times..very strange cause in 2002 i get better 2d panel fps and worse spot view fps!

Hmm... (-: getting interesting here. Many more people are more impacted then I thought. I don't get it...my videocard:Abit Siluro GF4 Ti4200 8xAGP (with Nvidia drivers)

Hi, It`s depends on your combinaison config/spec and all details in fs2004 from your system that's can manage your detail at the same time. All fs2004 to full expect, no shadows at all,2x AA, mesh at 85%, clouds 100 %, clouds draw distant 40%, ALL PAI traffic installed, 600 MB 3rd party mesh installed. I do not have frame rate drop in default aircraft, only with 3rd party aircraft, by adding this line, panelastexture=0 the problems is almost resovled with 3rd party aircraft. My Mid System; P4 2.533 MGZ 533, Gforce4 TI 4200 128 MB 8x, Asus P4P800 8x,Latest direcX instaled,Latest BIOS and Chipset driver Installed, Windows XP PRO updated to 100%, Official Nvidia drivers 45.23"When I press the "W" key to popup the panel"Why using W key ? Use shift-1 to popup the 2d panel is more faster then the triple W cycle key. Thanks for your shots; A perfect exemple from above comparaison :-)If I unlock the fps slider, my frame rate go to 30 FPS.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/38325.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/38326.jpgThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs

I too had problems with the 2D panel killing FPS. Also when I opened up any other window (radio stack, throttle quad, compass, etc) I'd loss another 4-5 FPS, never mind what the GPS did :-lolFS2004 is doing some very strange things. Some people have reported low FPS in the 2D panel, and after they open up another window (radio stack, throttle quad, etc) they claimed an increase in the 2D panel frame rate. Opposite to what I had seen..Good luck... RJ

I have similar issues. The weird thing is that only certain aircraft's 2D panels do it. For instance, with all of the deault panels, I get terrible FPS in their respective 2D panels, but with FSD's Commander, I get great FPS. Well, thank you guysfor at least confirming that I am not the only one with this problem..... and Vital's sceen shots illustrate very well what I was talking about.Mind you, I am happy with the performance I am getting on my 2-year old system (AMD1800+, 512 MB DDR-RAM, GForce 3 Card 64MB, 45.23 drivers, WinXP home, DirectX 9.0b) in all views, except the 2D-panel front view. This was achieved mainly by optimizing all the sliders and settings (like no AA in FS2004) based on recommendations in this and other forums. However, the degrading of frames in the 2D panel view just continues to be present, maybe on a slightly higher level. What is disturbing for me is the fact, that I cannot use add-on panels (like the Marciano-panels for the Airbuses), as the fps will drop there below 10.I still hope that some bright guy finds a solution for this. I also notice, that the problem seems to be present in various systems with quite different specifications. This makes it probably more difficult to find out what the reasons could be for this effect. Walter

Here it is even the other way round. When I fly the default C172 in dense clouds, I gett much better fps with 2D panel than without any panel.IMHO this is, because as far I have observed, clouds will only have an impact on fps when directly in sight. And when flying without panel there are off course more clouds in sight than when flying with panel, where the clouds beneath are hidden by the panel and generally the "scenery window" is smaller.BTW the same is valid, when flying over detailed scenery like add on airports. when parts of this scenery are "hidden" by the panel, the fps will rise.Wolfgang

There is one factor that might be having an impact on frame rate: the updating of instruments. This did not seem to be much of an issue in FS2k2, but with FS9 I am thinking about it. This would explain that without panel or in spot view we will get a higher fps. In the sameway different panels may show different results, depending on their complexity. As for the VC, I think that it might be due to less instruments being shown at a time.Is this an explanation?Regards,
