Catalyst 3.8's. Good News...and Bad News

Featured Replies

The good news is that they are available. The bad news is that the problems are still there. I just tried them and I'm going back to the 3.6's as I think the Alt-Enter issue is actually worse now.Doug

This really doesn't surprise me.It would have been good if ATI had fixed the issues of flickering screen and menu smearing... they could have come out of the experience being the hero. Alas, they won't fix the problems, and they won't garner new customers. Their loss. The one this problem falls to is Microsoft. This had to be a known issue during beta teasting, yet it was ignored... by both MS and ATI. ATI can't really be held accountable because their existing drivers (3.6 and prior) all have the same problems in FS9, but why didn't MS resolve the problem in late 2002-early 2003 in their upcoming FS9 release? And it would be unwise to expect them to fix the problem now.Given the choice between keeping the MS or ATI product, I'll choose ATI. I fly other sims and the card works great with them, including an upcoming and much anticipated jet sim soon to be released. It all comes down to the software guys putting it off on the hardware guys, and the hardware guys blaming the software guys. And in the end the consumer is the one that suffers.

Curious. My menus are OK now, and the flickering remains.Who writes their release notes?

Hi Doug,The bad news is that the problems are still there.Sorry to see that you're still having the same problems. I uninstalled the 3.7's and installed the new ones and while the screen flicker is still present, the smeared text is gone on my system. For a fool-proof uninstall and install, I highly suggest the following:http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php...readid=33656771Good luck!!Mikehttp://www.members.shaw.ca/madamo/boeingsig.jpg

I love my ATI card but this flickering is unacceptable. I really was looking forward to the new drivers, but all I have seen so far are cosmetical changes in the control panel. I'll give Nvidia a new chance soon. Never had any driver issues with any of my previous cards.Toby

Nvidia has done away with true anistropic filtering in their 5xxx series of drivers. You might want to rethink that?

This is really terrible to read. I have been holding off on purchase of a 9600 pro and then the 9600XT hoping things were resolved and still bad news.Bill

Just want to make sure I really got all driver components updated. Does the following info tell me that all DLLs are indeed related to the 3.8 Catalysts?(from the ATI control tabs)Catalyst version: 03.82D version: 6.14.10.6387Packaging version 7.94.030917m-011434C ATI(from the Windows Video Adapter/Properties/Driver tab)Driver Date: 12-Sep-2003Driver Version: 6.14.10.6387Version of ati2dvag.dll: 6.14.10.6387Version of ati3d1ag.dll: 6.14.10.3944Version of ati3d2ag.dll: 6.14.10.3944Version of ati3duag.dll: 6.14.10.0196Version of ati2mtag.sys: 6.14.10.6387I'm just a bit puzzled that some of the above files seem to be the same version as those from the 3.7 cats. Thanks! :D

The big improvement I see is no more text smearing, which was the biggest issue as far as I was concerned. I'm still disappointed ATI (and/or MS)have not resolved the flickering issue. I rarely use Ctl/Alt/Enter to switch from full screen to window anyway, as I run full screen all the time. I use Alt/Tab to switch from FS9 to another program (such as FSMeteo, etc.), which has always worked for me. ATI has work still to do, no doubt about it. But, I've at least seen some progress.

I would have to agree; the flickering has been much reduced for me, and I did not see any menu smearing which was a problem and and an irritant for me. FPS seem to have held up fine so no issue there. Overall, I have to report an improvement. Haven't done any benchmarking yet, but so far so good here. Just for fun, I ran the three Benchmarks that I have and the results were as follows:Omega 3.7a Driver:3D Mark2001SE= 152463D Mark2003= 4253Aquamark3= 35,258CAT3.8 Driver:3D Mark2001SE=152973D Mark2003= 4789Aquamark3= 37,527.I would consider those compareable, I did notice that the colors seem a little more life-like so I have to say that I like them at this point.

I still kinda fail to see why it's ATI's responsibility to fix this - FS2004 has problems with both ATI and Nvdia cards and I think you gotta point the finger at MS for that. Other games, including FS2002, do not have these types of issues on the Radeon cards. You can't tell me that the MS developers and beta testers didn't see these problems ocurring before release. MS writes Direct3D for cryin out loud, ironic that their games have the bugs using it. MS should have fixed this in beta, and I hope they'll release a patch. (though they probably won't...)
