Does anyone know when the evga gtx 580 is due out in the UK?
Bunner gman!  It is a pretty sweet card.  It throws heat like my old GTX 285 but runs cool and quiet.  Today I heard that a dual GPU (like the 295) version of Fermi 110 called the 595 will be out soon. There goes cool and quiet.jja

So is the EVGA GTX 580 SC worth it? There's a lot of places where the standard version looks like it might be in within a week or two in the UK but can't find much about the SC edition apart from a pre-order on one site

This is my first post on AVSIM forum and i would like to start with thanking everyone for the wealth of information that has helped me build the ultimate flight sim system for my father and the information that has helped me tweak the configuration the get the best flying experience. Thank you all, your shared knowledge has been a huge help !! I have recently purchased new hardware for my fathers new flight sim system (specs in sig) and have managed to achieve very smooth flight using an Asus GTX470 with REX 2 and ORBX with the BP=0 and AffinityMask=14 tweaks. Frame rates are good with an average of around 25fps and even under huge load they are very smooth at 18 fps. The only problem is this GTX470 has the blackscreen in 2D Desktop problem which has been tested in two systems and does the same thing in both. Basically every now and then on a cold boot it will blackscreen and will need to be rebooted. I have tried every solution possible but it wont seem to help. 2 days ago i decided to bite the bullet and purchase an EVGA GTX580 and was hoping to achieve 2 things, 1) put an end to my blackscreens and 2) perhaps lift the frame rates a bit in the built up areas. So far no blackscreens which is what i expected, however, i have not seen a single increase in frame rates, in fact the same recorded flight spits out exactly the same low high and average frame rates. I was a little surprised at this. My main concern however is that now with the GTX580 i am experiencing micro-stutters, they aren't huge but as everyone knows they don't need to be to totally destroy the feeling of flight. After a day of trying to eliminate these stutters, i remove the card and put back in the GTX470 and the performance is absolutely smooth and stutter free again. The 580 was a logical choice to upgrade from my 470 with blackscreens as from what i understand it is basically a 480 with some of the issues ironed out and since the 480 is highly recommended for FSX it seemed like the logical direction to go. I might add that the vapor cooling is amazing on this card, after hours of flying it remains very cool indeed, Nvidia have done well on this new system of cooling i think.Has anyone else experienced the same issue with the 580 and micro-stutters? Does anyone have any ideas why my 470 is smooth as silk and the 580 has micro-stutters? I feel like i am so close to all the time money and research paying off with a perfect system but between the two issues i am having with these two cards i am left a little deflated. Keen to hear if anyone else has seen the same thing with their 580. Thanks again. Dave [EDIT]  I am using the 262.99 driver but have tried an older one that came with the card also, same issue with both drivers. Also i tried as an experiment down clocking the 580 to my 470 speeds and that didnt change anything either.
These drivers are reported to fix stuttering in other games Dave.jja

Good to hear!! I think it is time I get a new video card...it always takes a little bit of time to get the drives sorted out!

Yea good drivers are REALLY important.jja

Hi guys, sorry for the delay in getting back to you and thanks for the suggestions.Over the weekend i decided to do a clean install of windows, Installed graphics drivers 263.09 (thanks jjjallen) , ran windows updates, installed FSX rebooted, ran FSX, did the same again with Acceleration. Installed latest directx9, upgraded firmware on my Vertex2 SSD. No luck.At the moment i am not using any tweaks other than BP=0 and AM=14. I am basing my current tests on trying to get smooth flight without any addons but with autogen on max as from what i have seen with others i should be able to achieve this very easily. No point loading up addons until i can get it smooth without any. Currently i get good frame rates but the issue of stutters is still there no matter what i try. This shouldn't be happening with no addons at all. With FPS unlimited i get massive artifacts, this goes away once i lock the frame rates but the stutters are still there whether i lock or not.Using Nvidia inspector I am using these settings and have tried without vsync and also pre-rendered = default (3).Its worth mentioning that i tried 32x AA as a test, i was reading that freebird77, you had very smooth flight with this, for me...terrible.1.gif?t=1290419057Here are my Scenery settings, again, only reason i have it set to high is because i am not currently using addons, these settings should be very smooth based on what i have been reading with others. If i cant run these settings smoothly i have no chance once i start to add payware even with sliders reduced. Also tried global texture to medium as suggested but no improvement.2.gif?t=1290419130Its at the point now where I'm sure that there is either a hardware clash or something not right with one of my components. Bad CPU maybe? but then it is very stable and cool with the multiplier clocked at 4.2.SSD? have read others have had great results using them, i do have the OS and FSX on the same SSD? surely this cant be it though. Bad 580? I really don't think this is a tuning issue since i have tried every combination of Affinitymask, Bufferpools, Nvidia inspector settings, HT on/off, running only 4 cores, drivers and the list goes on.There is a stack of technology under CPU settings in bios that i have no idea what they are, all set to default at the moment but haven't tried changing any of them as yet, only HT and number of cores. This system i am working on is my fathers new system but i will be upgrading myself in December to a 980x also, 12gb dominator GT and 2x ATI 6970's. Only thing i can think of doing is sitting tight until then and testing the new 980x i buy, ram also and 6970 and see if i can trouble shoot where this stutter is coming from. Thanks for your suggestions folks i really appreciate the help, @freebird77 i can post my CFG if you still want to take a peek but i am only running BP=0 and AM=14, performance is better with these but still stutters, tried your BP=10000000 also :-)

Again, your frame rates are suspiciously similar, so I would recommend benchmarking the two cards. If this is not feasible, why not run another game (preferablt GPU-bond, if you don't have one you can download a demo version) and see what the frame rates look like. Mislabelled CPUs/GPUs have happened before, so this test gives you a base case of either confidence to continue trying to get FSX to speed up or confidence to speedily exchange your card for a good one.Just me .02s...Cheers,- jahman.

Glad to see your still hanging in there Dave, you've got the right attitude to get to the bottom of it so let’s keep plugging at it.There is plenty more things to try and Yes please post your cfg as it will tell us ALL your settings also please post how you have your ram set up as far as timings, the Uncore and QPI, but here are some things you can try in the mean-time:You make a valid point about your AG and scenery density settings and the fact that you don’t have any add-ons loaded yet, but it should be pointed out that there are some very misleading results posted by Some about how they run full AG, because then you come to find out they have added some lines in the cfg that remove sooo much AG that "full AG" simply is not the case. So your probably ok for now at default scenery levels but the way to set up FSX is really start with low settings and >slowly bring everything up so you can see what’s what, sometimes its the stupid little things that set things off, AI labels, turn those off, tool-tips, also turn off, lower etc - later you can enable settings but first you just want to get into a smooth flight. And another thing as weird as it sounds, FSX may stutter after you have made some adjustments, but in a situation like this try shutting it down and re-starting >After you have made adjustments - FSX is a crazy little animal!1. Disable as many of the OS background processes &@($* possible, including turning off your antivirus, something may even be doing some excessive polling so turn off any O/clocking utilities if you’re using any - Problem still there2 Lower your Overclock of the CPU to 3.8 and disable HT, Why? Because FSX under load can put stress in odd places on the CPU that will show up in erratic performance were other apps wont show, L3 cache, the integrated memory controller and just a little weakness in cooler contact area while under load and it will produce stutters. Edit: You dont have a problem with your 470 though so this is a real long-shot I know....Now load FSX - problem solved? Re-clean contact area reapply nice even THIN coat of your favorite thermal paste (AS5 or ...) and carefully re-attach cooler. Or if the problem is still there? Continue to next (don’t change from 3.8, nor HT- we can do that later after problem resolved)...3.Try disabling transparency AA just to take that out of the equation, we can bring that back later, also uncheck AA in FSX and leave Aniso checked Problem still there? Leave these settings as changed and continue...4. Lower ALL AI traffic to 0, aircraft, cars, boats ALL of it Problem still there?5. Maybe this should have been the first suggestion but none the less just lower ALL your settings, ALL of them, disable all eye candy, no shadows nothing - If the problem is still there and you have tried all the above -->with AND with-out the various BP tweaks there is something really wrong with that 580GTX you have, however I still would like to see that cfg and you might have a look just to verify it is listing your display device properly, also in the BIOS you might try manually selecting 16x PC-E instead of Auto for your card.Hope this helps or if others think I missed something check it out, but do post that config and some of your other relevant hardware and settings, memory timings etc...

Testing my Vertex 2 speed yesterday i noticed the read/writes weren't as fast as they probably should be, after doing some homework i realised that i may have done the wrong thing by doing a normal format and re-install of the OS the other day.Its probably common knowledge for most but I'm still in the process of learning all the do's and don'ts with SSD and i now realise that i should have done a secure erase before installing the OS again, also i should set it up in AHCI mode from the beginning for the best performance and not IDE mode.I took the SSD out of my fathers system and plugged it into mine as a secondary drive but the problem is the OCZ toolbox used to secure erase wont run on my system as my BIOS doesn't support AHCI and wont run under IDE, so i am unable to return the drive back to factory settings. My plan is to take a spare Raptor out of my system, put it in my dad's install win7 on it and use the OCZ Toolbox from there to do a secure erase and restore factory defaults. While i have the Raptor in his system with Win764 installed i will quickly install FSX and necessary drivers and DX9 and test to see if the stutters are still there, this will at least rule out any issues being related to the SSD. I doubt it is the SSD as it should have been working fine the first time the OS was installed but it's a very worthy test.If the stutters still exist on the Raptor i will proceed with setting up windows again on the SSD under AHCI mode, test for drive speeds and then begin testing your recommendations, one thing at a time.I might mention also that i use a tool called SSD Tweaker that turns off all the things on the OS that can hinder the health and performance of the drive, recommended on the OCZ Forums. Thanks for taking the time to go through the checklist, I'm keen to give them a go. If you don't hear from me for a couple of days its because i have a bit of work cut out for me with the above :-)Thanks againDave :-)

Dave,Stutters are the result of unlimited fps if FSX. Set FSX to 30 just for testing. That should eliminate stutters. Then set FSX to unlimited and use the external limiter set at 30. That will improve smoothness too.By limiting the fps to 30, you will avoid spikes and artifacts that are the result of BP=0 and vsync on.If you want to test, turn of vsync and run fsx at unlimited. You will get tearing but not spikes. Also, disable transparency AA.

Though FPS=30 is a good sugestion Dave has already posted results on limiting frames and had no luck (back a few post), but you are right and he should be testing with the frames locked while attempting other fixes.Seriously though, with a vanilla FSX install? there is no way you should have stutters at unlimited on a good running AMD quad or I7 4+Ghz 285-580GTX while in default scenery, all of that should be dealt with in setting up the memory sub-system, OS and the sim before having to add any tweaks what so ever (as he didn’t have them with his 470)Would not recommend BP=0 as most 580GTX equipped systems will run smooth with a sizable BP=enabled, and second you do know that without the benefit of BP your scenery can quickly degenerate to blurry and then you are trying to compensate by adding other cfg lines and lowering IQ etc etc etc, might as well just fly FS9 right?. However If you are looking for the highest FPS and don’t care much about the highest IQ then sure go with BP-lean, but smooth flight balanced with great visuals is what you should be able to enjoy when you have spent so much on such great hardware IMO.Transparency AA is mentioned in my post above but only for testing, and not to go on a long rant here but why on earth would one want shimmering alpha textures when you own the "most powerful single GPU on the planet" and you are running silly little DX9 alpha fragments? Sorry for the hype on the card, but really I don’t know why some persist on lowering the settings really know what they are missing, I don’t recall my 480 having any issues with TMSAA or even TSSAA, with-out it, it is like going back in time before the 7xxx series NV cards when this wasn't even an option, YUK! And gamma AA can be used without any hit what so ever.I much prefer to find the sweet spot with hardware that enables all the higher level visuals at highres and smooth flight and enjoy FSX for having more than 16x the resolution over FS9, though different combinations of hardware can be a challenge..What sim & driver settings are you using with your 480 SLI rig with what kind of performance? I might go back to SLI depending on next purchase for monitors or not.

Bad news on the latest tests I'm afraid but the results do show that the stutters have nothing to do with overloading the card with high sliders, overclocking or tweaks of any kind. Vsync is more of an issue here than i originally thought. Before i get to that, the Raptor test produced exactly the same stutters which can safely remove the SSD as anything to do with these stutters. After secure erasing the SSD i went through the process of installing windows again using storage mode AHCI, win updates, drivers, FSX and DX9, tested the SSD speed with ATTO and benchmarked full speeds, so I'm back on track there at least.First test i did was with the previous settings posted above and the stutters were still there, no surprise. My next test was to strip everything back to the most basic settings. Went into BIOS, loaded default settings, changed storage to AHCI, left overclocking off and HT off also, 6 cores only, re-booted. (Couldn't find PC-E setting to force to 16x, looked everywhere). Nvidia Inspector settings, same as above but with AA Transparency off, went into FSX unticked AA, Aniso checked, locked at 30, turned every single slider to zero and every tickbox unticked and i mean everything set to as minimal as you can possibly set it, scenery as flat as a tack and textures totally blurry . And........You guessed it, STUTTERS! minimal but definitely there and behaving in the same pattern. This is what i have found, there IS a difference between Vsync on and off, before with more scenery turned on i was seeing the undesirable effects in each mode as the same stutter but they are not. With Vsync on the tear line passes up the screen from bottom to top around every 2-3 seconds and there is a small area either side of the tear line where the terrain appears to stutter, however outside of this area the rest of the screen remains very smooth, this effect however is horrible in its own right. With Vsync turned on, the whole image stutters very briefly but at exactly the same interval as the tear lines with Vsync off, in fact i can sit there saying...now...........now...........now and they will appear in time. These are not erratic at all. Problem is both effects are very undesirable and i guess the question remains why i am getting this at such minimal settings, I am still thinking hardware issue or BIOS settings maybe but at this point i understand there isn't a lot of suggestions left. There is nothing running in the background, fresh install with FSX only. I also tried removing a stick of ram and shuffling the memory around a couple of times, using a different PCI slot and banging my head against a wall, but none of these helped, especially the head banging part which may have caused memory issues of a different kind. I haven't as yet tried removing the H70 as i don't have any thermal paste here at the moment but i can say that the H70 had a very evenly applied perfect coat of paste on it with a clear plastic cap that was only removed before attaching, also temperatures remain very low even under load. I am going to test this again with a new 980X when i upgrade my system in a couple of weeks, along with trying new RAM and Radeon 6970. At least i have this opportunity. The memory I am using is 6GB of Corsair Dominator GT - timings 7-7-7-20 [CMT6GX3M3A1600C7], I don't know a lot about timings and overclocking but i was under the impression that GT are the performance modules in the Corsair family. Is there any reason why this RAM could be causing this? Unfortunately i don't have any other DDR3 modules at the moment but can test with alternative RAM when i upgrade and would be interested in any recommendations.I also plan running memtest, prime95 and installing crysis which will really test the cards performance and whether the stutters exist there also. I don't see how i could return this card based on stutters in FSX alone, there are no other issues with the system at all, haven't once seen a freeze, black or blue screen with the 580 and this system, seems very stable. One thing we know is something outside of settings and config is causing this, nothing to do with load apparently, i can only cross my fingers that a future driver may fix this but the fact that i am alone with this doesn't give me a whole lot of hope. If any of the above makes any sense to anyone, especially the vsync part would love to know your thoughts.[EDIT] also flashed my bios to latest version.Anyone reading this who is planning on getting a 580, don't let my troubles put you off, been looking all over the net and i swear i am the only one in the universe with this problem, at least with FSX anyhow :-)Thanks again.here is the CFG, but its pretty much Vanilla at the moment, tried BP=0, Poolsize=10000000 and AM=14 in different combinations but these only help with performance when using the heavy stuff and make no difference to the dreaded stutter pattern.[sOUND]AmbientUIMusicVolume=-6.000000SOUND_FADER1=0.500000SOUND_FADER2=0.500000SOUND_FADER3=0.500000SOUND_FADER4=0.500000AmbientUIMusic=FSX01SOUND=1SOUND_QUALITY=2SOUND_LOD=0UISound=1AmbientUI=0PrimaryDevice={00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}VoiceDevice={00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}[Display]ChangeTime=4.000000TransitionTime=4.000000ActiveWindowTitleTextColor=255,255,255ActiveWindowTitleBackGroundColor=0,28,140,64NonActiveWindowTitleTextColor=255,255,255NonActiveWindowTitleBackGroundColor=24,33,87,64InfoUpperRightTextColor=255,0,0InfoUpperRightBackGroundColor=0,0,0,0InfoLowerLeftTextColor=255,255,255InfoLowerLeftBackGroundColor=255,0,0,128InfoLowerRightTextColor=255,255,255InfoLowerRightBackGroundColor=255,0,0,128InfoBrakesEnable=TrueInfoParkingBrakesEnable=TrueInfoPauseEnable=TrueInfoSlewEnable=TrueInfoStallEnable=TrueInfoOverspeedEnable=TrueBLOOM_EFFECTS=0SKINNED_ANIMATIONS=0TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=30WideViewAspect=FalseUser
