A simple screenshot review of the new homepage

I have some experience with web page designing and this is What I feel needs changed. I'm planning to just quickly sketch (using dreamweaver) what I think the new AVSIM homepage should look like, considering they were going for a more modern look (Which IMO didn't work that well with this update- it looks like it's stuck between Web 2.0 and 2001 web pages.Thoughts? Agree? Disagree? Let's try to help Avsim fix their homepage, we all want this site to become better. Constructive criticism only please.

I looked at your image and comments closely. I have to agree with most of your observations. The only thing I don't like is that ImageShack keeps forcing a "Fake Scan" advertising page to run which has to be carefully backed out of in order to return to the actual image one went there to view!

Agree with all your observations—except that the news should be on a separate page

Actually, I'm thinking having the news on a separate page isn't necessarily a bad idea. What I liked about the old layout was all the news was on one page; in one quick sitting I could go through the days events and news in flight sim, and I could quickly peruse the latest uploads of the day - All in one glance with no clicking unless I want more info. My brain is pretty good at sorting through the data in the way it was layed out. What I don't like about the new layout is that I have to click on anything I want to read. This wastes time. I have to wait for the window to open, read it, then close it and move to the next article. Lot's and lots of physical interaction and distraction from the real purpose of my visit; to read. Talk about inefficiency. My problem is, if I'm going to be saddled with this new layout and having to click on each news item to read them (can you tell I hate that?), not enough information is being shown for each article to help me decide which articles are meaningful to me, so now I have to waste an inordinate amount of time ending up clicking on articles I'm not interested in. Click, click, click, click, click, click, click. Ultimately, I'm just not going to bother any more.If there was a separate page for just the news, then perhaps each subject header could contain more information (like the old days) and it would be easier to use. And then I could bookmark the news page and forget the home page (as it is now).*****************************************I should say something about how I use the page (which is not necessarily how everyone uses the page):I come to Avsim mostly to read/peruse the latest news, see what the latest uploads are, and peruse the forums, in pretty much that order. Occassionally, if I'm interested in a product, I will do a search on the reviews.******************************************So... I notice that some changes are being made. Thank you. (You ARE making these changes just for me, right?)Given how **I** use the page, I'd prefer:1. to see the reviews pushed to the bottom or even to another page i.e. give me a link to the page with the list of reviews, and just put the latest reviews in the news like the old days. I personally think the reviews section is taking away from the utility of the page . They are not something I access daily. Why are they at the top? Why do they take up as much space as the news? What is that jumble of text shown for each review (thereby wasting space)? Ok, maybe just a listing of review topic would be better. But really, ultimately I'm going to search for the review I want. So even a listing of them is pretty much useless to me, and the reviews do not belong at the top of the page. The news, however, I read daily. It should be front top and center, and take up most of the top of the page.2. Put all the latest uploads at the top, showing the uploads of the day on the front page, with a link to the page with past lists (which, as I've said before, is redundant and another innefficiency, since I can easily list the latest uploads for any period I want by going to the file library. Nice thought, but, no thank you, I won't find myself using this new functionality). Why make me click yet again and have to wait for a page so I can see the latest uploads?3. As noted in 1., Put all the news just underneath the latest uploads list. Each news item needs more space so I can figure out if I want to read it before clicking on it.Interesting idea segregating the news by topic, but I actually preferred having it all mixed together in one place. To me, it's relevance is that it is flight sim related, I don't really need any further granularity on my flight sim news when I'm reading it. My brain is smart enough to sort out what I'm reading about. Ultimately, I can live with it segregated, but, again, to me, this is another inefficiency in my use of the page. Sorting the news into different types means that you have to make different sections, and space is needed to separate the different sections. Why do it?Guys, this is the home page. You were(/still are?) a flight sim portal, a place people came to on a daily basis to see what was new on the page. The reviews are relatively static and don't belong on the top. Plus the new design now has a lot of wasted space at the top, forcing users to scroll a long way to access the data that used to be front and center. The main draw of the page in the past was the list of daily uploads, and the news updates. Users access of this data has been made much more difficult. Plus the new design is definitely not optimized for mobile devices. Which still leaves me wondering what the goals of the design were. Here's to hoping all this gets sorted out and the page becomes usable again. I hope the way I use the site is not too different from the way others use it.Thanks for listening.

Aside from the home page, when I click on the library page, I get a page with three items centered on page. I have no idea what these are -- three random uploads? three latest uploads? paid placement?scott s..

I actually feel I have left a few things out.For one, the search bar right below the menu options is unnecessary and can be joined with the actual menu bar. It wastes precious vertical space. The site seems like a cheap spam site with the flashing ads, typos and table-like layout. It's a pity.

I've reported the image link... it's a trojan that wants to lock computers down forcing the user to purchase software that doesn't do anything except continue to lock the computer down.

I've always preferred a scrolling page or even a scrolling frame within a page over the brief descriptions or a multiple page/frame list, but can see how that might not be as easy for a visitor who's not using the equivalent to a scroll wheel. An important issue when a scrolling frame is used is allowing the page to scroll to the point where the frame is at the top of the window, particularly important for visitors with smaller screens (like smart phones and touch pads). YMMVWith a site that's dependent on ad revenue a banner across the top of the page shouldn't be unexpected. I've seen many sites with a much larger percentage of page occupied by ads I've also seen plenty of sites with white space in a column, but most position any content above the white space, I'm glad AVSIM doesn't have pop-over ads like some other sites I visit (some bypass the browser's built in pop-up window blocking with an in window pop-up).I beleive that "Air Canada..." image is a rotating preview related to an item on the list beneath it. I don't mind things like that if the rotation is in response to hovering the pointer over an item on the list (but not merely moving past).-I find previews that rotate on a timer annoying, especially when not accompanied by a nearby list. One site I visit seems to be using a disproportionate use of memory and/or CPU cycles with large background images and a frame cycling through stories on a timer.

What?! It's imageshack! I've used it a million times before, no one has ever posted that it was a trojan. On topic: Avsim have reverted back to their old website which is decent but outdated, I feel that they still need a site redesign but done right. Hopefully avsim will get it right this time.

It is a trojan. Fr. Bill up above stated it attempted to install on his computer... I clicked the link and it tried to do it to my computer. It never did let me see the image. Imageshack is full of viruses and trojans in their advertising. I try to never open any pictures posted there.
