Hi there,Considering new system build in the near future. SSD is going to be a definite, but trying to figure out size, in part.FSX is my main game. Considering it's quite the space hog when loaded up with, say, juicy mesh terrain, textures, planes, etc., I'm concerned about the space/benefit comparison utilizing an SSD.Does FSX get any noticeable performance benefit from using an SSD? I've got mine on a Velociraptor right now and it does ok. Just curious if there will be a noticable difference, or if I should save some $$$ on the SSD size and dump the idea of having FSX on it.Thanks!

As far as i`m informed, you will not get an performance impeovement with a SSD.The load time will be faster, and perhaps the Sim a bit smoother,if it isnot yet allready----but not more FPS.I also use VRaptors and feel no need for upgrading to a SSD.Perhaps next year with a complete new machine.Michael

I would consider "smoother" an improvement. Certainly not expecting extra FPS out of it though.

No FPS increase, just loading time decrease. I actually just bought one for my new rig (haven't assembled nor received parts yet)

I will be receiving my SSD in a few weeks. If SSD's would be able to take care of those micro-stutters which most of us here want to achieve, then I'd go for an SSD anytime. But I guess SSD's would only be worth it if it would compliment the system it would go into. Maybe a [email protected]+Ghz, GTX580, and a low cas memory might be an example.

Hi,I have a 160GB SSD for Windows 7 alone and a pair of 80GB in RAID0 for FSX... I must say that the only thing that improves is loading time and is not that great... After loading a flight there is VERY little use of the SSD/HDD because everything is loaded to the RAM... that is why most people don't see any performance improvements... If you want to check that by yourself there are two freeware programs that can help you... they are Top Process Monitor and Drives Monitor from http://www.myfavoritegadgets.info/. A month ago I ran a CrystalDiskMark benchmark for the SSD/HDD and I got the following:Intel X-25m 80gb RAID 0Sequential Read : 517.986 MB/sSequential Write : 167.424 MB/sRandom Read 512KB : 353.648 MB/sRandom Write 512KB : 168.202 MB/sRandom Read 4KB (QD=1) : 24.527 MB/s [ 5988.0 IOPS]Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 91.347 MB/s [ 22301.4 IOPS]Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 282.264 MB/s [ 68912.0 IOPS]Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 158.643 MB/s [ 38731.3 IOPS]WD 300gb Velociraptor RAID 0Sequential Read : 220.521 MB/sSequential Write : 222.250 MB/sRandom Read 512KB : 57.271 MB/sRandom Write 512KB : 94.136 MB/sRandom Read 4KB (QD=1) : 0.813 MB/s [ 198.4 IOPS]Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 2.803 MB/s [ 684.2 IOPS]Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 3.684 MB/s [ 899.5 IOPS]Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 4.029 MB/s [ 983.6 IOPS]In an webpage that I can't remenber I was reading about the 4kb random read/write test and they basically it represents in you pc how fast it start the OS and apps... or in other words... desktop jobs... (correct me if I'm wrong)... that is why SSD are great when they are dedicated to the OS... But when loading FSX the relevant things I could see were 6 or 7 70MB/s spikes and two 105MB/s spikes...but still it was in the range of a normal operation of a Velociraptor... Maybe the "fast" feeling is the much lower latency of the SSD compared to a normal HDD... Regarding the microstrutters I believe they can be fixed tweaking the fsx.cfg... I've tested a lot of cfg's and some of them gave me strutters and a lot of pauses and others smooth FPS...Besides all that a 256GB SSD is way too expensive and if you are an addon fan you'll run out of space really fast... I say a 300/600GB Velociraptor is the best choice...Dexter

It boots the OS faster. It loads FSX to the startup screen much, much faster and that IS noticable. Then, once you select your flight and click the Fly button, it loads faster there too and that IS noticable. Now this could all be caused by the fact I was able to OC my system to 4.8GHz and FSX is CPU intensive. I'm comparing my assessment between my current system and my previous system (shown below my current system specs). When you can load FSX faster it makes the flight sim a lot more pleasurable. I can also state with complete accuracy that FSX flights are absolutely smoother even if the FPS fall into the teens (have not seen it in the one digit areas yet) and this is with the PMDG 747 or CS 757 or the LD 767 in heavy default weather. I can positively state that scenario caused my previous sim to almost crash or the memory got so muddled it had a hard time deciphering the information needed to land and I usually had to disengage the AP and bring it in manually. I have my scenery settings set higher too but most are not maxed out (I don't think they should ever be maxed out as it causes deformatives in the mesh raising runways higher than the surrounding area, etc.). So I voted yes.Best regards,Jim

An SSD will help with FSX startup loading times if you have lots of scenery, especially if photoreal. I would definitely buy one (several, actually) if I could afford them. My start-up time is like 8 minutes with 2x 300 GBy Velociraptors full of scenery.Cheers,- jahman.

If you're asking, is it worth the upgrade? Then I say yes!If you want higher FPS, then NO! Increased loading times and texture loading is improved with an SSD.If you do go with an SSD, make sure you set it up correctly to ensure the use of trim command and best performance.

Could you please expand on this topic? My SB system is on the way and I did order a smaller SSD dedicated to FSX only. Other than plugging it into the sata 6gbps port, what else will I need to do? It will run on Win 7 x64.

The question is rather or not the SSD is "worth it". No. I'm not paying premium for shorter load times. It's a silly waste of money. I'm not going to pay insane amounts per gigabyte to save 30 seconds of my "valuable" time.Keep in mind I own two SSDs and I regret having wasted hundreds of dollars on them.

Ryan,Set up BIOS as AHCI then install windows. Download Intel RST drivers and install.

Haven't you heard that time is money?

Thanks, will the ACHI setting affect my current 7200 rpm drives which I plan to bring over to my new system? They are already formatted in NTFS and have data on them (mostly pictures, videos, backup documents etc)And also confirm setting ACHI has nothing to do with RAID, because I won't be using an array.

Yeah. I think you mean "[A little] Time [saved] is [lots of] money" :Bring It On: :Tounge: Read/Write benchmarks mean nothing to me. Obviously the SSD is going to win. But applied to the Sim in real world situations, cost to performance is ridiculously horrible. We all love bleeding edge tech, though. I admit that and I also admit I run my OS on a SSD. Boot up time is 20 seconds less than it used to be and I don't have to defrag it. Other than that my Sim(s) and Total War games are on three 1TB WD Blacks. Plenty of room to breathe. Gosh I wish I could have spent that $250 on a cooling loop!
