930 -> I5 2500K

Hello, Is it worth it to upgrade from an I7-930@ 4.0GHZ to a build using an I5 2500K at 4.4 or higher?

Hi,It's really depends on what you are looking for. Are you happy with it? If you only recently upgraded and have money, you might as well wait for better options later in the year. You can check out the FSXMark11 results post and see for yourself the gains. Vu

There is a large performance decrease between the i5-2500k and the i7-2600k. Your question is subjective, I cannot tell you what worth is to you but if anything I wouldn't move for the i5-2500kthe i7-2600k has the performance of a i7-980x so the question you have to ask yourself is would you buy a 980x if you could make the change for around $500 which is what the upgrade will cost you then decide for yourself.I probably would not make the change but that is just me. I just came off a socket 775 and my next chip will be whatever it is in 4-years from now.http://guru3d.com/article/core-i5-2500k-and-core-i7-2600k-review/23

What for? FSX only?

Thank you all for the responses. I'm pretty happy with the performance of my rig. You can always use a little more horsepower, especially when flying into highly detailed airports. Dazz, it would be mostly for FSX, although I play some FPS games sometimes.

i5 2500K should be OK for FSX only, as I presume everybody are aware that FSX do not use HT!Thinking.gif

But when Flight comes out, perhaps hyper-threading will be of benefit.A little future-proofing never hurt anyone who only built systems every few years.

Saying there is a "large performance decrease between a 2500 and a 2600" is a complete lie. For fsx or any type of game anyway...The larger cache and HT only come into play on rendering and encoding type work (or synthetic benchmarksIf you are building for fsx or any other games, go with the 2500k

If you have an i7-930 and you're happy with it, I would wait until socket 2011 is released at the end of the year

I know that half of my posts (and that's a lot already) are probably about this, not trying to argue or anything, just curious but, what makes you guys think LGA2011 will bring anything substantial that is not already in 1155? It's just the same architecture with some extra SATA ports and PCIe lanes that will only play a role in multi GPU setups... in 10 years maybe. It's the same thing again than 1366. Why wait for something you can have now, and much cheaper? Of course the I7 930 is a great CPU and keeping it is also a good option, but if I was to wait for something, it would be Ivy Bridge at least

Tell you something:Had I known the "truth" about 1366 vs. 1156 when it comes to most of things, I would have never bought it. It was WAY to expensive and not even a little better for FSX and games than my uber-expensive i7 system.The mainboard was great, CPU was really great, and all that. But it was like - pay premium for premium, rather than performance.

I got the i5 2500k after having the i7920 @4.0 ghz, GET THE i5, it changed my life!

Hi Ron, In what ways was the I5 better than the 920?
