Choose Landing Runway!

Featured Replies

Helloi want to know how real life pilot can find suitable runway for landing for destination airportwhat is the parameters?Wind?!or ATIS (which one is Active)how some pilot know about landing runway on departure airport and other one choose it on middle of way at the sky!if some one explain these thing ,i ll really appreciatedThank you

Generally, wind will determine which runway direction is active. ATIS of course will give you this info, but that report can only be obtained near the approach (I think about 60-100 miles out). However, most jetliners have ground dispatch operations offices that can let the pilot know which runway is in use (even before departure) via ACARS messaging (which uses satelite communications). That way the pilot can plan ahead and input the expected STAR and arrival runway on the ground before departure and if necessary change to a new runway on approach. I believe most modern airlines have ACARS capability, so they are always informed during flight of the expected runway.

Normally we know what is the runway in use via ATIS... Depending on the signal strength you can hear the ATIS between 100 and 200 nm (before descent)... That gives you enough time to program the arrival & approach in your MCDU...If you are flying in an non congested airspace, for example the caribbean, you can ask the ATC what is the runway in use at your destination...Dexter...

Your doing some real world flying at 13 yrs old? And I though I was young when I started at 15. The good thing is that by the time your old enough to solo you'll have a lot of hours. :(

Sorry, I had you mixed up with another "Dexter", hahah. That's why I was wondering, I should have noticed with your 1979 in your user name. The guy I though you were is 13 and that's why I wondered when he said "we". I though 13 was a little young to already be flying, but you never know, I started at 15 so anythings possible.

Here's a tip if you're using Active Sky Evolution:Go to the Reports tab and uncheck Lock To Closest. Type in your destination ICAO and you will see the wind direction. From that you should be able to figure out your active runway, or at least select a suitable Star. The bigger the airport the more possibilities there are but it's still a useful indicator. If you don't have ASE, you should! :)

Hello and thank you Very much look i watched many worldroutes Video and piloteye.tv i want to figured out about itWould you please tell me more about how s working ACARS system on Cockpit?is this related to the third MCDU which Airbus A330or340 have on bottom middle of pedestal ?i mean pilot give reports vie message on paper some how like fax?or something?if you explain more,i ll really appreciated

NVM, corrected.

Listen to The ATIS frequency for that airport. It should come up about 60-100nm out. Use ATC for FSX. It's pretty accurate.Well up to a point, but that's another post altogether.

The problem with FSX ATC (as is FS9) is the ATIS isn't usually picked up until 60-70 miles out, which is way too close for normal descent planning. I asked Microsoft to address this shortcoming in 'Flight', and I hope they listen and make it more like 150-200 miles out.

fsx atc should be telling you what runway to expect when they say descend to flight level XThat's how they do it in real life, or acknowledge your planned approach route with runway.
