GEX, REX, FTX, UTX

Hey Everyone!I was wondering about purchasing GEX and UTX. But, is the performance hit great? I have an i7 920 and an ATI 5870. I already have REX and I love the performance and the textures!

If you can run REX, you can run GEX & UTX. Your horse power looks ok to me. (Providing your FSX is tuned ok)

Yes, they will be a small hit. Look out as, UTX has some nighttime lighting that will be a big hit. UTX has a manager that will let you tune it to your performance settings.

GEX shouldn't cause any performance hit, in fact many users actually report a slight improvement in GEX vs. the standard FSX ground textures since the GEX texutres make better use of autogen annotation.Like the other guys said, UTX may cause some performance hit due to the night lights if you choose to use them. I will caution though that depending on what version of UTX you use (due to many updates), you may experience a larger performance hit with road traffic than using default FSX road traffic due to the way it was increased. I noticed this when I went from one version of UTX then applied one of the updates that essentially corrected a road traffic fault, but in essence correcting that fault actually added much more road traffic. What I did was install UTX on another rig to a dummy FSX fodler, extracted the older car traffic files, then remaned them and moved them back to my FSX rig to gain the FPS back. Also, if you plan on not using any road traffic in FSX, make sure to turn off road traffic in both the UTX control panel as well as the FSX UI because it was found that having it turned on in the UTX UI but turned off in FSX, still resulted in a small performance hit. Interesting Sean. Did you test and see your performance go back up with 0% road traffic?

I fly exclusively commercial aircraft (mostly jets) for VA's. Which ones of these: GEX, REX, FTX, UTX should I get and what are their respective benefits? Thanks Robert Cole

since most of the time you spend in the air and seeing clouds I would say REX for better clouds, runways, water and more ...If you only fly in FTX region you dont need GEX and UTX My choice would be REX first than FTX if you only stay there otherwise maybe UTX and than GEX before FTX ... but GEX isnt that much improvement so that maybe last. You can try the FTX demo and see for yourself ... ORBX is really great

since I cant edit my previous post ...a few additionsGEX replaces the fsx standard textures with better looking ones ...UTX just tells the sim where to find what like river, street, railroads, coast, city and so on ...to exaggerate a bit: you fly over New York and expect to see the Hudson River and the skyscrapers but instead you see just a mountain. UTX just say to use the texture here and there (if no GEX the standart textures, with GEX the higher resolution textures) to get what you would expect to see, but mostly for bigger cities/regionsFTX ORBX combines GEX and UTX for one specific region but does everything much better.REX make everything else looking better :)

If you can afford it, buy all of them. I own all of them and they all work together. I often fly out of FTX regions into Gex regions and they blend nicely without the drastic change. I could not live without any of them.

" I often fly out of FTX regions into Gex regions and they blend nicely without the drastic change": Talk to me about FTX regions vs. GEX regions. Thanks Robert Cole

If you buy GEX USA all the textures in the USA are improved, but not that what FTX can offer. And with GEX alone there are many errors in the map (like missing/misplaced rivers and other landmarks), but if stock fsx is enough for you you dont need UTX.FTX just have a few parts covered like 3-4 states all in the western region of the US. I think there are 4 packages for the US which covers about 20% of the US if you have all 4 packages. If you fly outside these regions and then having just fsx textures it will look really bad compared to what you have seen in the FTX region thats why many also install GEX so that the differences aren't that big.
