So, heres the case per se:Since 2004 I`ve only been using FS9, and when FSX came out, I figured i`d jump over that and wait until the next release, which isgoing to be Microsoft Flight.. But whatever, I`m to anxious to get started with the PMDG MD-11, so I really dont care. Besides, i lovestaying years behind simply because I can max most of it out..Anyhow, as we all know, buying everything they have at Simmarket, Flight1 and PMDG will offer some problems, as the more add-ons one havethe messier it becomes.. Im just too experienced with that.. yikes how much Visa must love me!What confuses me however, is this;On Microsoft`s own compability site for Win7 they state that FSX acceleration pack is compitable with Win7 64bit, but that FSX deluxe is not. To make matterseven worse, several online vendors shows a different tale, as they will describe the deluxe version as totally compatible with Win7 64bit OS.What is true? And to simply run ONLY PMDG MD-11, Mega Airport AMS, some global terrain stuff and yadayada, It should be enough with basic FSX or not? This is somewhat confusing for a caveman like me whos been swingin his drum and playin FS9 on Win XP the last few years, im just learning howto make a REAL bonfire!Any help would be greatly appreciated

Alright! Thanx for the answer. BTW What happens if one installs FSX into the Program Files folder path?

I bet they love all of us too. LOL.gif You'll be able to find a lot of great help and tip for getting your FSX setup tuned to get the best performance. There is no end to what the community can do.

Hmm, others that have bought Deluxe will be more qualified to give a full answer, but I would say that it is just because FSX doesn't take advantage of a 64bit OS. Many of FSX pilots use 64bit machines in order to increase the available RAM beyond the 3GB limit of 32bit. FSX however still will not use over what a 32bit application can address. This is true for all versions of the software, so I think because FSX is still a 32bit application they put that on the box. Probably something they wanted to say but didn't include it in the first runs. Either that or that message just applies to an auto-installer.

It's so easy a caveman could do it... :( (^-^) You could see if the CD has separate installers for FSX and FSX Acceleration. I would try and just do a manual install of both and see if they run well. I don&t think that 64bit warning has any weight. Can anyone else confirm that FSX deluxe is still ok on a Win7 64bit machine?

All version of FSX work in windows 7 64 bit, The reason you dont install it in the default folder, is because the default program files folder has too much security on it and it can cause issues with addons, Best to install on another drive, separate partition, of if no options, then c:\fsx. The SDK is fine in the default folder which is where it installs anyway.

Yes it is fine - although the SDK (with Acceleration) seemed to install with about half the sections missing.Maf, Vista (yes, Win7 is officially a Vista version) is the biggest 'nanny' yet with the UAC (User Access Control) feature that blocks all your attempts to edit config files and make changes to anything in Program Files. On install, watch for the little check box that says "custom install" so you can choose to install somewhere like C:\FSX which will give you many less headaches. Pay attention and don't continue if you miss seeing the checkbox - if it shows that it's about to install in Program Files, back up until you find and select the option. It's even better if you can install it on a different HDD than the OS.Loyd

"More options" is the button you're looking for to change the installation folder. That's really strange about it saying it's not compatible. Maybe they just didn't bother to test it without the Acceleration pack.

I'm going to ask another question here. What type of OS and video card are you using? If your rig is more than just a very few years old, you are going to probably be disappointed by the performance you will get with FSX and a stack of add-ons, especially when compared to the performance you got with FS-9. Maybe you mentioned your specs and I simply missed it. Tread slowly, you might be on a slippery slope to poor performance.

FSX is NOT compatible with 64 bit OS? That's ludicrous!
Now we have an explanation for all CTD´s, malfunctions, errors, and what not:"The Hog" is not compatible with W-7 64 bit"!Whistle.gif

Maf, if the PMDG MD11 is the only reason why you're considering switching to FSX... it's available for FS9 too

No no, Im just very tired of Fs9 limitations compared to FSX, its just that im awaiting my new pc, so ive been planning to do this for a long time.

Hehe, my old pc is going to the dogs. It has trouble handling the most FPS-friendly scenery there is, so Ive bought a new one. Im going to use Win7 and Asus Radeon HD6970 on an AMD Phenom system.

One would think so, yes, but its not the case according to Microsoft:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Software&p=Microsoft%20Flight%20Simulator%20X%20Deluxe&v=Microsoft&uid=10&l=en&pf=0π=40&c=PC%20Gaming&sc=Simulation%20%26%20Driving&os=64-bitThen again, its supposed to work fine on a 32bit system.. Is it just that FSX cannot make use of the 64bit system, and that it really doesent matterwhether one installs it on a 32 or 64bit OS?

So what ur saying is that C:\FSX will run smoothly but C:\Program Files\FSX will not? Heres the thing that confuses me a bit more, as im operating anorwegian OS, Win7 will also be in norwegian, and therefore there will be a program files folder and a programfiler folder, one in each language. Maybe it will work installing it into the norwegian one.I was supposed to get an SSD HD to run both the OS and FSX from, but maybe ill have to get two? Thanx for the help folks! Im always blown away by how much ur all willing to share with thine knowledge of greater things in the mysterious flightsim world!

This is probably a data entry error. If you look on the same site you will see that the Acceleration addon package is 64-bit compatible. How could that be if the base package was not compatible?
Then again, its supposed to work fine on a 32bit system.. Is it just that FSX cannot make use of the 64bit system, and that it really doesent matter whether one installs it on a 32 or 64bit OS?
It does matter. On a 64-bit OS the video card gets its own separate address space, leaving more address space available to 32-bit applications than they would get on a 32-bit OS. This is in fact the main reason why running FSX on 64-bit Windows is a good idea.

FSX will not run any better in C:\FSX, it is just that if you install to the default location you *may* run into problems with certain addons because of the special protection Vista and Windows 7 gives to the default location. (If you do decide to use the default, don't change it to any language-specific folders - just use the default).
