GA Aircraft with no GPS?

Featured Replies

I bought a real Garmin GPSMAP 196 and got it hooked up and running with FSX. I have to say, it was a bit expensive (although I plan to use it for real-world flying) but it is a TON of fun having real GPS hardware to sim-fly with.So I'm interested in finding some GA aircraft to fly that don't have a GPS in the panel. I fly in the VC exclusively, which limits the amount of panel editing I can do. It would be fine to have a GA aircraft that has a GPS 500 in the panel that can be removed in the panel.cfg and just leave a blank spot in the panel (the Carenado Arrow is a good example of this).I know the Carenado planes are obvious choices, and I have several of them (Archer, Arrow, C152, C172, C182, V35), but by and large they all have one problem or another that makes me not love them. The Cherokees have really questionable flight models (particularly in the pitch axis), the Cessna 172 has atrocious panel lighting, others have various problems with lighting or one thing or another that doesn't work. The one Carenado aircraft that I do really love is the V35 Bonanza, but it has a GNS 430 in the panel. The other thing I would really like to have is an IFR-capable aircraft, which means something with a glide scope. Right now the Carenado 182 is my preferred aircraft for my setup as it has IFR instrumentation and no GPS in the panel.Besides Carenado, are there any suggestions? I have the RealAir Citabria/Scout package and while these are great they are not really cross-country/IFR cruisers, which is what I'm looking for.

The Aerosoft Katana comes with a 500 which you can exclude then. The Aerosoft Dimona comes with a nice unit which, on some models, isn't attached to the upper panel, so if you leave it at off, you may use your hardware instead. On the Ant's Sierra, you could exclude the default GPS295 (or leave it off).

The Orbx Lancair comes with a clean panel option, leaving out the radio stack. Or you can use her default setup and exclude the two 430s there, just using the cover to fil the gap in the panel then. The Milviz C310 comes with such a clean panel too or you can exclude her 530+430 setup.I'd recommend looking at the screenshots on the dev's sites to catch a glimpse on the actual instrument setup.

In the Carenado family, you might want to consider the 185 package. For them, probably the best FDE (after the updates). Non gps in panel. The RealAir Scout could also be a good option, even if it is an older release. I am trying to remember if the SibWings BirdDog is IFR ready. That is another very good model.

Since you have the RealAir Scout, the most obvious choice for cross country and great 'flight modeling' might be the RealAir SF260. No GPS in the panel, but fully IFR equipped. Quite quick as well.

Can you say, "RealAir Duke Turbine, boys and girls? I thought you could."

Lose not thine airspeed, lest the ground rise up and smite thee.

But it has a GPS lol... I also highly recommend it!
