Does anyone know what the font is used the HUD?

Featured Replies

Hey guys! I'm looking for the font used in the HUD for most of these flight simulators. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

What font is that? I have been looking all over for the name of the typeface but I can't seem to pin it down. The overall letter forms resemble a those of a dot matrix font, but they are obviously much smoother. Anyone have any idea what this font is called, or where I can find it? Thanks! Daniel

Hi, Don't know, but try Arial in FormattedText with<String>\{bo}...etc.See (bad) pic. Jan

Believe it or not, Verdana is a very close match for the font in the video. The only difference is that the crossbar in the letter A is a little higher than the video and I wasn't able to compare the letter M which is usually the other major difference between fonts that look similar. -Dai

I have to agree. Verdana very closely matches what I call the "Boeing Font".

Oh man, I really appreciate the help guys! I really should have posted a picture instead of the video, because it's a little hard to tell (even for me). I've attached an image of basically what I'm looking for. Glass Gauge comes really close! Especially with regards to the overall proportion and letter shapes. Most of the distinctive letters like the A, V, and M and pretty much exactly the same shape. The "cut-off" corners in many of the letter forms, like the L, O, S, D, G, etc. cause it to feel a bit more futuristic than the font in the HUD. The lines making up the letters are also significantly thicker. The reason I'm being so picky is because I'm currently designing a HUD for a next-gen game and I'd like to try and make it feel as "authentic" as possible. I made a little diagram with all of the mentioned fonts listed here so it'd be easier to compare. The "dot matrix" types fonts that I mentioned before come the closest in terms of the letter shapes, curvature of round letters, width and spacing of each letter, the "verticalness" of the left/right sides of each letter, etc. But the issue with them is that they don't hold up at larger sizes, and at small sizes the "dots" are still very visible (especially if you look at the parts of the letters where the line curves, or makes a diagonal). The font used in these aircraft HUDs just seems to be a dot matrix font that's "higher res" I suppose, so all of the curves/diagonals are smoothed out. Anyway, I really appreciate the help everyone! Maybe someone with the knowledge might be able to locate the actual font .ttf file that's used in the flight sim... Daniel

I looked at the FA-18 HUD and several other HUD gauges I have. They seem to be Arial, Tahoma, and Quartz. If you could find the actual HUD gauge used in the pics or similar videos you could look at the XML gauge and read the font used. I did a search and found HUD's in the Ariane, PMDG and IFly NG planes I don't have any of them. If you could locate a simmer that has one of them they could look at the gauge and possibly see what font is used in them, if they are XML gauges.

I use Glass Gauge for my HUD, the numbers match very well exceot the 0. Regards.Javier

I had the same question about Airbus EFIS and HUD. I came to the conclusion that no existing font really fits, and a new font must be created. I think it is quite easy for a font designer whou would start from an existing font (verdana or arial) and modify it using a font editor. Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge, the skills nor the tools to do this...I any of you is a font artist and has time to do, I would be glad to know :) Eric

Hi,the Tahoma fond is fine with me on my HUD. Dietmar

Hi Dietmar! Do you have a screen of your HUD?, just curious. Javier.

Yes I have.
