Harddrive related advice wanted

Featured Replies

My current system has started to get problems with hangups and failed boots. According to the event viewer there is an event 11 incident. According to MS this is most likely due to a problem with harddrive. So it seems I need a new harddrive. What is my best options?First the most evident performence problem I have is with blurries. So I find getting a SSD drive sensible. My impression is that 120 Gb is the best size to choose since 60 Gb is to little for both Win 7 and FSX+addons. In addition to this SSD I'm going to need a mechanical drive since 120 Gb is to little for everything. I agree an SSD is good for FSX. I have an 80GB SSD and it's not enough either so I think you are right to get the 120

But sometimes I wonder if even 120 Gb is enough for Win7 + FSX with addons. I think my FSX folder was 60 Gb and Win 7 30 Gb and have read that you shouldn't fill a SSD more than 80%.

Currently I have a 300 GB Velociraptor where i have Win7, FSX and FS9 installed. The OS takes up some 20 GB, FSX something like 50 GB and finally FS9 about 90 GB. I've ordered a Corsair F 120 GB and I plan to put Win7 together with FSX there and FS9 on the Vrap. I really have no idea what would be the IDEAL way to install everything since if you ask you get 10 different answers! Should I perhaps leave the flight sims on the Vrap drive and just put Win7 on the SSD? Or is there really no point in getting the SSD at all and just sticking with the Vrap as it's a very nice perfoming unit? But I agree that in the long run a 120 GB SSD might prove too small!! Questions questions and too many different answers! :D

Regarding mechanical drives, right now is probably the worst time to be picking up a mechanical drive. The flooding in Thailand has caused all sorts of grief for Western Digital and consequently, most HDD prices (WD or not) have shot through the roof.

I guess I should specify, the ONLY thing on my SSD is FSX. My OS is on a VRAP and my storage is on another 1.5 TB hd. If yore wanting to only have one hd and it be an SSD, get the biggest you can find.

And still I have just ordered a WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR GREEN 750GB SATA/600 64MB for 449 SEK which seems a fair price. But just a few hour after order delivery confirmation mail I read on the website that they have removed the product and it can't be ordered any more. Many other mechanical harddrives appear to have increased in price. A machanical harddrive was a must for me to complement the 120 Gb SSD.

So you don't have the OS on the fastest drive. Were it not for the advice that you should always have the OS on the fastest drive I should consider having only FSX on the SSD and place Win / on the mechanical drive.

It's not really the OS that I care about running fast, it's the textures in FSX.

Mind you Caviar Greens have a "design fault" that reduces it's expected life dramatically. It uses a power saving technology called IntelliPark... well better read here for an explanation and how to prevent it from becoming a problem overtime:http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1367904I would get a Spinpoint F3 1TB or a Caviar Blue instead. Caviar Green is quite a slow drive

Hi everyone,Been out of the country and absent in flight sim circles for that and some other reasons for some time.Thought I would just add that notwithstanding opinions and some objective evidence to the contrary, I find that twin 120g SSD drives make for a smoother and fast OS and FSX. Originally had them in Raid 0 but now prefer one for the OS and the other for FSX. Storage is available on WD mechanical drives. However, there is little advantage to be gleaned in FSX with an SSD or two unless the rest of the components are equal to their tasks.Kind regards,

From what I can see in the link this problem only apply to linux and raid and not Windows. A 1 Tb drive would have costed more than twice what I gave for my caviar green, I don't see why it should be slower compared to other similar drives. It has similar or better specs.

It happens in Windows as well. I have a caviar green and it's something you can check with HD Tune (Health -> Load Cycle Count) or similar. As the Load Cycle Count reaches 300K you are in serious trouble. And Caviar Greens are 5400rpm drives, ok for mass storage, but for just a bit more you can get a much faster true 7200rpm drive and 100% reliableHey, you are warned now. I'm just trying to help you avoid making the same mistake I made. Your call

Been googling a while and apparently only when using Speedfan (which I do, and that might explain my 100K LCC after just 1 year of usage) can trigger the excessive head parking under Windows.Besides not all Caviar Green models sport IntelliPark.I would still not recommend these drives for a desktop PC, and if I were you I would check that Load Cycle Count just in caseYou can do that with HD Tune, the free version is fine. Can you please post a screenshot of the "Health" tab? I'm curious now

I found out that nothing is mentioned about the rotation speed. But the drive has 64K cache and is SATAIII. At any rate I have three years warranty and if it fails they will have to give me something else (right now a caviar black seems more likely) since they no longer sell the green drive.Result from HD tune
