REX - Real Environment Extreme - what does it replace? Advice please.

Featured Replies

I read by chance that REX, FS9 and FSX, are being sold at a big discount at SimMarket, so having read nothing but rave reviews of these products, I have bought them and they are downloading as I type this (9 hours to go, it says!!).I have little or nothing by way of addons for FSX, but for FS9 I already have a huge number and I'd really like to ask those who have REX and/or other 'environment' addons in FS2004, which the REX programme will replace completely (i.e. what I need to disable/remove) and which (if any) will be good to run side-by-side. I am thinking of:1. FSNavigator 4.7 (probably want to keep that as I know it and it works just fine - though I haven't seen the REX flight planner yet of course! Is it s real step up?)2. Active Sky 6.5.3. Ground Environment Professional4. Flight Environment5. Airport Environment Upgrade (aeu8.zip from AVSIM)6. Ultimate TerrainBe really grateful for comments on this. I hope I haven't acted too hastily in buying REX when I have all this stuff set up already! (A clear 'no' from what i have read! looking forward to being able to confirm this after I get to install the products tonight).Martin

REX will let you install wonderful replacement textures for:- the sky, the Sun (and the lens flare) and clouds- waters (both inland and the ocean)- runways, taxiways, aprons and runway lightsSo, it means sharing functions wtih numbers 4 (Flight Environment) and 5 (Airport Environment Upgrade) from your list. However, nothing will happen by force. REX has a great GUI (interface) and you can precisely choose which elements in which variants you wish to install. What's more, you can change particular elements if you don't like them by launching the GUI again and browsing through all the options.I recomend that you also download the OVERLOAD pack, which is free and offers tones of extra textures.Nothing has to be disabled first as REX will make textures backup and overwrite/install any textures you choose in the GUI.

Rafal,I think you mean the OVERDRIVE pack! :)

I do! blush.png I myself am having an overload at work, so it influences my posting more and more...

Hi, thanks for the reply. I set my PC to download the Overdrive pack and the REX FSX setup files, then went to work - came back 10 hours later - turns out I'm a bit short of space on the hard drive and so both downloads failed! I had calculated there was ample space, so I don't know what happened to fill it up. Going again now - another 10 hours to go. I could spit! Will be worth the wait I guess! As for my original question though, you mean REX will complement 1,2,3 & 6? If I choose to use REX for weather, I wouldn't need Active Sky installed, no (for instance?). I will soon (i.e. tomorrow now!) find out, but I assume pretty much all the files in REX are bitmaps - there are no bgl files or whatever, so Ultimate Terrain will go just fine with it?Martin

Active Sky has a better weather engine. Ultimate Terrain works just fine with it.

I use AS6.5 as the weather engine and REX along with UT and GEPro. I don't think it gets any better than this for FS9. I've had some really gorgeous skies, especially at sunset.
