December 16, 201114 yr Greetings all,I'm trying to learn how to properly fly non-precision approaches in the NGX. The preferred way appears to be the VNAV approach, but I'd also like to learn the VOR, LOC, NDB, and back-course. What is the correct way of doing them? I know it involves DA/DH, and proper tuning of the radios, but how do you set up the FMC and MCP?In a related question, non-precision approach charts have some sort of angle of descent after the FAF. It says something like "3.05 degrees", and underneath it something like "TCH50". How are those numbers used in the approach? Many thanks Ron Priever
December 16, 201114 yr CDAP (Constant Descent Approach Procedure) computationSet your TDZE (Touchdown Zone Elevation) rounded up to the nearest 100foot so 1 foot would be 100feet and 99feet would be 100feet in the ALT MCP window,Set your MDA (Min Decent Altitude) +50 in BAROCalculate your decent rate, Vref / 2 X 10. So 150 Vref would be 75 X 10 would be 750 fpm decent rate. When at the point of making final approach just set the V/S of 700feet to 800feet in the MCP V/S windows or manual push yoke down to get this V/S, you will see on the ND the green bar drop too just about the start of the runway. This is what I do before all landing, I'm sure others can chime in but the above works every time for me when landing without ILS but have made habit to do every time. You can do RNAV (GPS) approaches in the FMC witch are non-precision approach I believe too and provide VNAV guidance to a point were you should see the RW.Also to fully answer your asking about 4 difference approaches. Witch I don't feel like fully answering each in there own for time sake and lack of full knowledge, (So your asking for just non-precision in general? And also the finer details of VOR, LOC, NDB, and back-course?) but the above is the basic way I think a non-precision approach should be made,VOR : http://204.108.4.16/...13/00291V23.PDF This is not VOR/DME. Just VOR is just bearing not distance as well!ILS : http://204.108.4.16/...3/00291IL23.PDFRNAV: http://204.108.4.16/...3/00291RZ23.PDF AKA dive and driveAll approaches in ORF RW23 but IMO really the only major difference to me is the DH for each and were the approach starts.back-course is just that I don't know a chart off the top of my head, but it's just the LOC tuned and when flown the opposite, right is left left is right -Raven HarrisIntel i7 980X @ 4.43GHz | ASUS Rampage III | Corsair 6GB DDR3 2000MHz | 3 EVGA GTX280 | Corsair 1200 Watt | Intel 510 SSD (RAID 0)PMDG - 747-400/8iF | MD11/F | BAe J41 | 737NG 6/7/8/9 Hope ER/BBJ|777LR/FFlight1- Cessna Mustang
December 16, 201114 yr Also a VOR/DME you could use VNAV (as you said) decent or (VOR/LOC using described CDAP above from Raven)But with VOR/NDB you shouldn´t use VNAV decent, just the VOR/LOC metodh with an CDAP, or go Visual the whole wayfrom FAF if you are good and the weather and ATC permits you to do so.That´s what I´m beeing taught anyway.....Hmmm.Also look in your flightplan for the rwy on your CDU, that it has a GP...meaning "Glidepath" There´s no glidescope in those above mentioned./ Leffe Leif A Mikkelsen **********************
December 16, 201114 yr Raven: I recommend setting MDA rather than TDZE in the MCP ALT window. That way if you are flying in VS or VNAV mode, the aircraft will level out at MDA and you can either try to find the airport and land (by hand) or proceed to Mapt and continue missed. Also note many charts will list required VS for CDAP on chart prominently - compare this to your GS and set accordingly. Well-written procedure will allow for VNAV so you can compare your vertical track with VNAV vertical track. --Peter Fabian
December 16, 201114 yr Or just use LNAV/VNAV. Much simpler. My company uses APP for ILS, and LNAV/VNAV for everything else (except LOC G/S out of service). Matt Cee
December 16, 201114 yr Don't forget if you are performing a CDAP to turn G/S off in your FMC on the APP page. Rick Hobbs
December 16, 201114 yr I also highly recommend if there are VMC conditions, to learn to fly them manually.. Just a suggestion.. Tony Fontaine
