Painters Issues - Post Here

Featured Replies

Ok guys, we seem to have a lot of posts throughout this sub-forum. All to do with the paint kit, the wrapper and other things livery related. PMDG hasn't answered any of us yet, so how about we work together at least to list all the issues that we're all having? In one thread. It will at least be a consolidated location for Jason.B, Pete, and whoever else browses but rarely posts.Issues that I know of and have corrected:

  • Mysterious white line on #2 and #3 fuse dds
  • Alpha channel for 900 fuse & night psd's incorrect
  • Guides not correct size
  • Alignment fuse psd's incorrect

Issues that I cannot fix:

  • 900 Bottom color is darker than the rest. This is not a shadow issue, specular issue or a bump mapping issue. This was reported happening after SP1 and even the default PMDG 900 now has the darker belly color.
  • Outer TOP Wing (smaller half toward the winglet) - Seems to take light differently than the other. Bottom wings 100% no issues.

The outer wing issue is possibly my bump, however it is correct and have checked it a trillion times (give or take one or two). I understand that the paint kit is free but our posts go ignored and my pm's as well. Here I am trying to do a tutorial that will most likely take 20+ videos to fully cover from the most basic to most advance techniques I know (and hopefully will spark others to share theirs). I have politely messaged the ones that would know and still no response. I have never, ever treated anyone that wanted to help me or past companies in such a wrong manner and will never understand it. No one is too busy for an occasional post on their forum. No one!Painters, please post what you have. If nothing else, we may be able to help one another. It takes a lot for someone willing to put so much time into creating things for strangers for free and deal with the things painters do (one reason I started my forum to begin with). The last thing any "Human being" should have to deal with is ignorance and being ignored (see half the other posts in this forum). Busy? Okie dokes. So state your issues. If I know the fix, I'll do what I can. If not, I'll look into it the best that I can. Maybe it's being looked into? Who would know though, so at least we can post in one spot and between us all we can hopefully keep this post on page one where maybe some day it will get the attention you need. Please post the issue and model so we can better help one another.

Well Dan thanks for the great post, I wish pmdg would change this kit to be more user friendly please, this should not be this difficult for instance why is there a huge blank space from fuse 1 to fuse 2 & 3 incredible waste of time trying to line up logos and in the end still have a seam line should not be this way should be one continuous fuselage to lay down graphics on, stupid most I can deal with but this takes the cake imo, luv pmdg but this needs to be addressed, thanks for listening not a lot of people attempt these paints so the pain involved is not fully understood any way luv your video you just posted wish I had more time to enjoy it, have to get back to the struggle of a repaint I am trying to finish.Regards

Great post Dan! These things really need to be addressed. The one thing I just can't see why it was done is the huge space between each section of the fuselage. It makes it so extremely difficult to do proper curved lines!Merry Christmas guys!

Thanks!

It would be easier to have a unique fuselage master for each model. I usually finish quickly the paint itself but spend 75% of the time trying to line up everything. That is for complex liveries of course.

I will add something I found:engine side textures are incorrect, notice that there is no IDG OIL access door on the right engine. I am correcting this.Left and right engine bottoms are mislabeled in "what is what" layer, at least for 700, have not tried all models. Might or might not cause you some headaches.Great idea Dan btw.

Yeah definitely the infamous white lines on the fuse lines is a tad annoying.

Thanks for sharing your issues here guys. I think collectively we can get these sorted and at least point out the bigger and possibly minor discrepancies. I can see why certain things get mislabeled. I have tons of kits from other companies, and even the ones I made often get labeled wrong. It's hard to catch and like many of you know, when you're looking at a paint that will soon be turned inside out by the program when being applied, it can be quite the mind workout.@ Nick, the huge space between each section of the fuselage has me wondering exactly what you might mean. Is it that you're painting the 800 or 600? Those are because the combination kits and also needed to have dds files being square. A DDS file must be 4:4 and I think it's just hard to understand by many if starting with the 6 or 8. The tutorial will show people how to start with the 900 and quite easily make their own guides to shift things like complext gradients over to the right spots.I think a lot of people having the white line issues just need to make new fuse.psd sections. So in other words, don't use the fuse 1, 2 and 3 psd as it is. Those are only one layer anyway. I recommend in any paint that has things like that to just open an original and use it when moving your master layers to it. It will greatly help with aligning, especially windows. On that note, be sure you're zoomed in since one "nudge" doesn't always mean the same value if zoomed out. I still have 2 video's to bang out today that focus on getting the right apps installed and was surprised how many people don't have them already. The other shows some tips on setting up your workspace colors (dark) which is a must in order to detect the white lines when flattening. I've asked many about that white line appearing when flattening and they agree that they've only seen it when flattening or merging layers that have global effects conflicting with non-global. I have also looked at a few peoples textures that are having this issue and found most just need to get that first one right which can be a pain. After that, they will all snap to much better. This to is in any kit I've ever used or created. Adobe Guides I never liked because one persons "Selection" may be out of whack, thus throwing them off. A good way to check this is to select the Marquee tool and look at the top box "Feather". Be sure that's set to "0". Then go into the select menu "Select" and click refine edge and see if anything else is already set. Adobe's preferences can get screwed up alllll the time and many times you have to reset them the old fashioned way. I can't speak for versions above CS3, but from the Adobe forums I see these users still having to reset them via "CTRL+SHIFT+Right Click>Open".My family project is a bust. Until someone can help me with the inter/intra codec issue in AE I'm having, at this point it's dead in the water. Although terrible for me, it does allow me to get these videos worked on today and Saturday (tomorrow I have a plumbing job - yay).

Hey guys and gal, I got a couple more videos edited and ready for viewing on youtube tonight. This video will help a lot of you that I've at least talked with over the last weeks. On thing it shows is how to set a much needed color to your workspace and the importance of certain views in PS. I have talked with several people that said those annoying white lines aren't on their files and it's the wrapper doing it. Well, in each case I've proved that hypothesis wrong. During flattening like I've mentioned before, the white line is appearing, but people just can't see it. These steps will allow you to see them, or at least make it much much easier to see them. It's also just a must since it makes looking at any of your work in PS much easier on the eyes.

Hahah. Your fsx loading window is very funny. I thought at first you had change the default image or something! It's After Effects, right?

Haha, thanks for noticing Sagga. I worked on that for hours in FLASH and you're the 1st to even notice :)(even my beta viewers I don't think caught that). Years ago I actually edited my entire FSX gui including load screen. I lost them files and looking back at them, glad I did. I actually always do something hidden or not obvious in any video or Flash that I do. I would say that over 90% of these things are always missed and I'll never point them out either. So yes it was rendered in AE, but created in Flash. I keep forgetting though that AE doesn't see certain things and won't even bother with my Action Script,,, It was a little different but it worked out in the end. Thanks for noticing :(*For those wondering, it's not in this video, it's in #2 (links are in the descriptions on Youtube).Back on track though. If I've talked to you recently about your lines, pleaseeee watch this video!

Yeah, you also gave me another tip I didn't think about... Previewing the repaint in the main fsx screen saves a lot of time. ThanksHere you can see what I learned so far with AE and 3d animations:

You should make some AE tutorials!

Thanks Rich (and thanks for not calling me sir!) :(@ Sagga,That's sweet! Did you create all that? I can't afford 3DS Max, but I love Blender. Blender is open source and is to 3DS Max as Gimp is to Photoshop, free, not quite user friendly, but very powerful and plenty of tutorials out there for noobs like me.As for the AE tutorials, hate to say it, but have you seen my forum? Currently I have a few Flash tutorials, and a few Photoshop tutorials. IFR tutorials (in Flash) and others. Each subforum pretty much has its own tutorial section. I plan on doing more after some time frees up. After Christmas maybe. AE is my favorite program Adobe ever made. I would say Flash, but I still give that credit to Macromedia :(

I see. If you were a student there is a 3ds max student version for non-commercial use. I use Blender, sketchup and gimp as well. I'll check your forum.

I've been reading about Sketchup. Never heard of that, looks pretty cool, thanks. As for student discounts go, that wouldn't help me none. The discount would have to be giving it to me for free and paying me on top of it haha (yeah, I really am that poor).
