February 2, 201214 yr Hello Ed, long time watcher or your vidz. Love them and the fact that, like me, FS9 is your sim of choice!Don't think Southwest have autothrottle on their 733's or the VNAV mode. They liked their pilot's to keep it real. In fact I read somewhere that their SOP's didn't even allow autopilot below 10,000Keeps the hand flying skills sharp! :Hypnotized:For some strange reason they didn't like / have Autobrakes either!Tom (EGCV) Edited February 2, 201214 yr by MMEL

February 3, 201214 yr Tom etal...re Southwest Auto throttles Vnav on the 300's. You are correct that we don't have auto throttles on the 300,500's. However, we do have VNAV on some of the 300 fleet. If it has 2 CDU's present, we can utilize the VNAV. Our 700's and soon to be 800's will be full up on everything. Most of the fleet have HUD's(Head Up Guidance) except the 500'sMOst of the time on those aircraft, I use the VNAV for sescents, it doesn't do that great of a job holding speed on the climb. As to autopilot use, we are encouraged to use as much automation as possible. Unless an anomaly requires the A/P to be disconnected, it is used most of the time. There are a lot of us that will handfly, usually on climbout to 10k; but usually use the A/P for the approach, depending on what type.IE: if straight in, we'll use the A/P a lot to 200 ft depending on what kind of day we have had. :-) If it's a busy visual; ie he "slamdunk" into KDAL, Most of us will kickoff the A/P and handfly, due to all the configuration cahnges going on; just a little easier that way. And there are some that will use the automation more; and others "old school" that still want to ..."Fly It Like a 200" :-)Hope that clears up some things for you.Best,DavidEDIT: Clarify ALL aircraft have/use autobrakes now. It's a requirement on wet runways. Edited February 3, 201214 yr by David B
February 3, 201214 yr Thanks David, great to hear the facts - clears up a few of the urban myths! Must be an interesting combination having the HUD's in the -300. Real mix of old and new.CheersTom (EGCV)

It's a requirement on wet runways.Thankyou for your info David, in which case I will be using the autopilot for the big left turn of the Rwy 24R LOOP6.LAX departure as recording it "live" I will need some help being the Capt, F.O and passenger at the same time.No autothrottle throughout the flight and the AP will be out by 1000ft for the ILS Rwy 25L approach as this is the bit I enjoy the most. :( Edited February 3, 201214 yr by edetroit My FS Videos
February 3, 201214 yr If your going to fly to Vegas in FS9 everyone should have this scenery of the Vegas strip. It really helps make things look a bit more real when at KLAS.http://fsx.o.oo7.jp/ (click on FS2004 or FSX and scroll down to the Las Vegas scenery)
February 3, 201214 yr Hi Tom, Yep it gets interesting sometimes on the transition from the 700 to the 300 or 500. The SA is so much better on the 700. :-)Hey Ed, yep that is pretty much spot on. Typically, departing on the Loop...after depart. ATC wants us to 250 quickly; so we'll fly our 210/220(if above 117k) to 3k then accel to 250. Ordinarily, if we are going away from our fix, we stay at the slower speed. But, in LA they want us out of there quickly. Usually around the 8-10mi range they give us a left turn back to the LAX Vor; then pick up the Loop from There. It's a little tougher making the crossing restriction in the 300 vs 700; but we usually seem to do ok.Have Fun. look forward to seeing the vid. I too love your panel edits; as others..so many times I wioshed I could have that. :-) Or at least have the talent to create one. Oh well, I'll stick to flying the 73 and my Aerostar.Best,David
February 3, 201214 yr Yep it gets interesting sometimes on the transition from the 700 to the 300 or 500Hi DavidI see that the -700's originally had the EFIS/MAP style display set up. Did this help at all with transitioning between NG and Classics? Seems most airlines (including Southwest?) have dropped this setup now in favour of the PFD/ND arrangement. Which did you prefer?Tom (EGCV)
February 5, 201214 yr Hi Tom, In our case. We had that setup(I called them the tweetie gauges); due to having the analouge classics as well. The Feds wanted us to have a seperate type rating on the 700; with the PFD/ND display.(So I was told)So SWA came up with the 'tweetie" layout to have compatibilty with the 3,500's. I beleive he 200's had mostly been phased out at that time. Also, since we were not full up at that time; kept costs down as well. It's a breath pf freash air, to finally fly the ole girl as Boeing intended. :-)Best,David
