January 31, 201214 yr Hello All,I have a question or two regarding real-life use of the HGS/HUD. I had heard that some US airlines require (by SOP) use of the HGS for landing. Does anyone happen to know which airlines that might be? Also, besides the airlines in the US, are there other airlines around the world that require use of the HGS for approach/landing? I always strive to be as realistic to real world operations as I can be, and with such an integral device such as the HGS, I would be interested in knowing what airlines require its use if I'm flying say, an AA flight, or DL, or WS, WN etc...Thanks for any answers! January 31, 201214 yr What about takeoff, I thought some use HUGS on takeoff to aviod tailstrike too as per SOP? -Raven HarrisIntel i7 980X @ 4.43GHz | ASUS Rampage III | Corsair 6GB DDR3 2000MHz | 3 EVGA GTX280 | Corsair 1200 Watt | Intel 510 SSD (RAID 0)PMDG - 747-400/8iF | MD11/F | BAe J41 | 737NG 6/7/8/9 Hope ER/BBJ|777LR/FFlight1- Cessna Mustang
January 31, 201214 yr This is a direct quote from DL's OE Guide; "When operable, the HUD should be used for all T/Os, approaches, and landings." Edited January 31, 201214 yr by Rey Arrey AtiKATL Supertug
January 31, 201214 yr Author Great answers! Keep 'em coming.Does anyone know about AA and if they "require" HUD use? Adam Hill
January 31, 201214 yr Does anyone know about AA and if they "require" HUD use?Yes, they do (T/O and landing). Christoph Kühne
January 31, 201214 yr SWA (WN) does, I believe. They don't. It is required for visibility at or below 1/2SM. Other than that, it is up to the pilot.
January 31, 201214 yr Author So, for the USA:DL - Required for T/O and LandingAA - Required for T/O and LandingWN - Only if at or below 1/2 SM visibility or pilot's discretionAnyone know about WS (WestJet), or UA/CO (Continited)? Of all the North American airlines who operate the NG, those five are really the only I ever fly. And I know there's at least one WS pilot lurking around here somewhere....I'd also be curious as to what some of the rest of the world's major carriers do.I really appreciate all the responses! Thanks! Edited January 31, 201214 yr by adamant365 Adam Hill
February 1, 201214 yr I don't think COA has the HGS at all (based on Airliners.net pics) Steve Caffey
February 1, 201214 yr Author I don't think COA has the HGS at all (based on Airliners.net pics) WestJet doesn't have the HGS equipped either. Duh...I guess if I had just looked above my head I would have seen that those two airlines don't have HGS equipped, therefore they can't use it during any phase of flight! Thanks for the replies!
