Video - ILS Approach in Heavy Fog

Featured Replies

Hi All,Flying in FLIGHT's Heavy Fog is no easy task as can be attested to by a number of folks already. For those who have not flown this type approach in FLIGHT, here is a short clip of flying the PHTO (Hilo) ILS Runway 26 approach during the day with the RV-6A in Heavy fog.I started recording at Procedure Turn Inbound Intercept, but as Kevin said, you get multiple 4GB files that need to be stitched together. This isn't so difficult but seems something lost in the conversion process to a file type Youtube accepts. Something I need to work on and learn to do better. For now, it's much simpler just to upload one 4GB .avi and let Youtube do the converting. The (current FAA) approach chart can be found here: http://aeronav.faa.g...2/00756IL26.PDFThe clip shown begins at approx. 550'agl (about 600'MSL) 3.7 DME from I-ITO.

  • At 500'MSL the Airport Beacon comes into view (just barely can see the rotating lights at 11 o'clock).
  • At 400'MSL Station Passage occurs over the ITO (HILO) VOR... note the CDI (Course Deviation Indicator) swing to about full deflection and back... and the TO/FROM Indicator change from a "FROM" to a "TO" indication (due to the "Cone of Confusion")... the ground starts to come into view about this point.
  • 288'MSL (250'AGL) is the DH (Decision Height) for the this approach... and clearly I do not have any part of the Runway Environment in sight that would (legally) permit continued descent. A Missed Approach is in order.
  • At about 160'MSL the Runway Approach Lights come into view and you will hear the rest of the flaps coming down. One could safely say this is ILS CATII Weather.

Try watching full screen (and 1080p if you can)... detail is great. "Enjoy".-Rob O.

Flight sure needs to simulate head movement.

The sky up above is so much bluer.

I'm sure glad it doesn't... one of the first things I disable in the FSX config & FLIGHT menu.Besides I can tell you from RW experience... flying an ILS in these kind of conditions your head isn't going to move a whole lot (save turbulence) because your eyeballs will be caged to the panel until DH. :Tounge:Track IR could be nice... but I have never purchased one.

Most every time I see comments like these... I think there needs to be a separate sub-forum entitled "Eeyore Observations".There's no "dang that is Heavy Fog" or"wow what a nice panel"just "woe is me... all is lost... I'll never have the sim I want" etc.
Very cool Rob! That fog certainly looks a lot better than the low visibilty in FSX in my mind, it actually looks like moving through fog!
Thanks DC! Appreciate the comment and glad you enjoyed it... really puts one to the test.

Wow, neat video Rob, thanks for taking the time to make and share it.That is some serious fog, they have done a great job with that.

I already have the sim I want, it's called FSX. But the panel really felt like a frame pasted on top of the view, no need to get offended.

It is difficult to see the Approach Light System, Runway Edge Lights and Taxiway lights (it is Daytime) but they are there.Trying watching Full Screen in 1080p... the fog does a good job blanketing all but a couple in front of the plane.

Oh I am not offended at all sir.I am just a little tired (and bored with) of all the "another denigrating FLIGHT comment" that this Forum is (but should not be) filled with.FSX one can zero out head movement and I, like many others, do this.So I find your comment completely irrelevant and out of place.

Welcome btw Don... :-)

I am just going to say that there are people who have no problem watching a 4:3 image stretched on a 16:9 50" TV and there are those who will not watch a movie unless it is the original undistorted wide-screen version.See where I am going with this?

I just think tower controller should set maximum brightness for rwy lights in these conditions. Nice landing btw :)

Hi Attila...No lands or peoples to conquer today... so a little grumpy? It was recorded on a Dell U2711 and I have watched it on my Dell 24" (both widescreens). Recorded with Fraps and pushed directly (no editing as I said above) to Youtube. It is what it is... sorry it does not meet with your expectations (eh... not so much). Wish I could help out but you seem more knowledgeable in this area than myself.--------------------May look a bit better if you have the Big Island and can check it... load up a plane at Hilo on 26... heavy fog, morning. Thanks G_P

Great video, Rob. You tracked that one down really well.I suspect that a lot of people have been using FS rather casually and would not be able to shoot that approach in those visual conditions. It says a lot about this game that it does include that possibility.Best regards.Luis

Finally someone who like the simulation aspect of Flight. I was really bored about kids speaking about balloons and gne' gne'.I only know jets so these " ILS " landings are new to me but I guess the missing A/P would add another simulation missing aspect.

Now that is pea soup! Surely it would be too thick to fly in and far below minimums wouldn't it? I don't know, for I am not a real pilot.Kind regards,
