March 7, 201214 yr Do the Hobbs meters work in the airplanes? Is time flown in each plane kept for each pilot?
March 7, 201214 yr Yes & don't know. Wouldn't make sense if they did, since they're supposed to log the time the a/c has done, not the individual pilot. But I'm the oinly pilot on mine, so wouldn't know.Mike D Mike Dryden
March 14, 201214 yr Author I have been monitoring the Hobbs meter in the Maule. It does keep track of the hours flown in that plane. Nice little detail.
March 14, 201214 yr That's pretty neat, guys, tach time is accumulated for each airplane and for each paint scheme in the Maule and RV. Cool.Best regards.Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
March 14, 201214 yr Can someone tell me where the Hobbs is located on the RV? Stearman? The Maule makes it very easy.I think I would prefer that the Hobbs keep track of total time flown in plane type (Maule,RV) as opposed to every paint scheme. For the Maule, I'm using the Red/Blue for cargo and gold for passengers.
March 14, 201214 yr A nice little detail would be to be able to have a list on the pilot profile that shows time flown in each A/C, not just the one with the most hours.I use the gold Maule for clandestine missions only.
March 14, 201214 yr Can someone tell me where the Hobbs is located on the RV? Stearman? The Maule makes it very easy. The Vans RV-6A apparently has none. The Steraman meter is on the lower part of the RPM Indicator. (Remember as Luis posted before, it will be different "for each paint scheme") Ramón. Time, is the one thing no one can buy.
March 14, 201214 yr Each paint is considered a "unique airplane" and you will notice they all have their own fuel levels as well. There is also a stat for it in your profile. It confused me at first since I have flown 12 unique planes but I only own 4. Aaron
March 14, 201214 yr yeah the fuel level got me one time....i filled up full, my kid changed the pain and i was about 6nm away from my where i tookoff from and realized i had 2% fuel! yikes!
March 14, 201214 yr A nice little detail would be to be able to have a list on the pilot profile that shows time flown in each A/C, not just the one with the most hours.Absolutely agree. Especially since every paint scheme has it's own Hobbs.
March 14, 201214 yr On the RV, the tach time should be on the EI RPM gauge, but those gauges are not yet fully operational. Nor is the timer, or the audio panel, or the S-Tex autopilot.... Lots to wait for :PBest regards.Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
March 14, 201214 yr Can someone tell me where the Hobbs is located on the RV? Stearman? The Maule makes it very easy.I can't find the Hobbs in any of them...
March 15, 201214 yr Author In the Maule the Hobbs meter in within the tachometer (RPM meter) on the extreme right. It has a rolling number display of 5 digits.
March 15, 201214 yr Ok thanks Gerry... that tho should be "engine hours" based on engine rpm... like Luiz said (tach time). Here's is what I meant by "Hobbs" which can be switched on electrically (using say... the ignition circuit) or, depending on the model, using oil pressure. This is what I was looking for (and couldn't find).
March 15, 201214 yr Moderator Just because the Hobbs meter is on the prop tach gauge doesn't mean it's driven by the prop......there are several ways that a Hobbs meter can be wired to record time: It can measure the time that a master switch is on. This tends to overstate Hobbs Time. It can be activated by oil pressure running into a pressure switch, and therefore only runs while an engine is running. Many rental aircraft use this method to preclude flying with the master switch off to improperly reduce Hobbs Time. It can be activated by another switch, either an airspeed sensing vane under a wing (as in the Cessna Caravan) or a pressure switch attached to the landing gear (as in many twin engine planes). In these cases, the Hobbs Meter only measures the time the aircraft is actually flying. This is for those who wish to record Time In Service. Metrics such as Turbine Actual Runtime are kept to monitor overhaul cycles, and are usually used by commercial operators under Federal Aviation Regulations Parts 135, 121, or 125. It can be activated when the engine alternators are online (as in the Cirrus SR series). How it's wired depends largely on what the owner wishes to keep track of. Fr.
