Tip - Mouse scroll wheel usage

Featured Replies

I never saw this documented in the manual and just accidentally stumbled upon it and it solved one of my biggest pet peeves with this game.Problem: With the text window up you can't operate certain cockpit instruments until it goes away. This is troublesome in multiplayer or if you switch cameras a lot.Solution: Put your cursor over the item you want to adjust and roll the mouse wheel up or down to operate it. Depending on how you have your scroll wheel speed configured this has much much much more precision than the typical click and drag method. I can scroll through OBS headings 1 degree at a time now instead of the typical "Click, Drag a fraction of an inch and skip through 5 degrees of heading*This works for nearly everything in any of the cockpits that requires you to pull or turn to operate.. Push button/toggle switches are the only thing it doesn't work for.

I'll tack onto this...I never read the manual so I don't know if this is in there either, but...if you hold down the middle mouse button and move the mouse, it manipulates your viewpoint so you can see in front of the Stearman, lol.

I've never once used the "click-and-drag" method to adjust knobs. The mousewheel has always been my first recourse, especially for fiddly things such as hdg or crs adjustments, radio tuning, etc. When I program my own models, I use Left/Right Click and Mousewheel for all control inputs, even switches.

Mousewheel is the only way to turn the magnetos in my case (other then zooming in every time).

Hawaii!

This is great for trim, btw, you can set 1% steps, instead of the 4-5% the buttons give you.

thank you for the trim tip, I'll have to try this.

Hey Rickenbacker,Not sure if you are aware of this - if you have your trim mapped to any buttons on your joystick, you can change it to where each button press only moves the trim by 1 degree. That is one of the first things I did, thanks to some early tips on this forum. All you need to do is remove the repeat lines from the standard.xml file, for each related trim axis for your joystick. You can also adjust joystick sensitivity and null zones from within this file as well.Specific information on how to do this can be found in the tutorial section here on Avsim, under Flight and early tutorials for Flight. I would highly recommend for anyone, before making any changes to the original xml file, to always back up the original to a safe place to have in case needed down the road.

Thanks for the tip! I might try that. I kinda like the repeat, though, feels more like the real thing... But the steps are definitely way too large when mapped to a stick button!

Thanks styckx,Perhaps this was common knowledge to some but not to me. I really appreciate you sharing the info. Maybe there are a lot of handy tips that people are aware but just don't bother to share because they assume everyone is aware of them. I found it really handy for setting the mixture and the pitch. Thanks again.Jim F.
