October 11, 200520 yr I thought I was seeing things when I was alerted to a thread from months ago! What was it, March?Great how Avsim keeps us all going!
October 11, 200520 yr I usually base my flight choice on interesting weather, scenery availability and destination. I look for bad weather, I almost always fly to and from airports that I have scenery for (usually not a problem because I have a ton of scenery) and I like flying to holiday destinations. After I figure out the above, I chose and appropriate aircraft - usually a commercial passenger jet. I also have a ton of aircraft it is usually a tough decision. For me, the airport decides the aircraft/airline.Most of my flights are in the US, Mexico and Caribbean. I would like to fly in other places more often, but I can never find good weather information. Don't they have weather radar in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America? www.wunderground seems to have a lot of world weather, but I can never get satellite or radar pictures out of the US. There used to be a site that was called something like "awful weather.com" but I think it is gone.I would love to find a one stop shopping location for worldwide weather. October 11, 200520 yr Hi, I kinnda fly like I always have.Usually alone, low traffic area, from my then home airports, in rural Sullivan Cty. NY.I do the same on the Sim.Along with accurate handling sim planes,in my case the Dream fleet Archer its honest enough, scenery ,detailed, scenery,is most important to me.Low,slow VFR,in real time weather, is just fine.Over familiar country, finding landmarks, river beds ,lakes, imaginary deer herds, is fun for me.I salute those designers who do their best to take away the "Pool table" look of some areas. FS Geneses does a great job,so do others, the move into scenery enhancement is for, me, the most important ad don in the Sim world, followed by weather depiction. It of course applies to the Heavy Metal flights as well, for that matter all flying,On final, into Rome,Paris,JFK and all,its so realistic to glance at the local scenery, even when on the gauges. HAVE FUN VIN
October 11, 200520 yr >Howdie Folks,>>This thread really caught my eye and is developing into a>discussion that many readers will be interested in. To that>end i have posted a a short news story and link to it on the>frontpage. >>keep the suggestions coming!!>>Rgds>Aidi >http://www.avsim.com/pages/0100/avsim_sig.jpgThats a great idea, these are the type of discussions I look foward to at avsim forums! :)As for me if it is commercial, I've created my own little hops (for those I only have 45 minute moments) KGLS-in my FSD 337 Skymaster to - KIAH this is my home work airport and from there to various little routes KIAH-KDFW-KELP-KAUS-KIAH. GA is whatever little town city or lake I spy out on the FSNav moving map. For long hauls I'm waiting till I get the LevelD 767. I fly a few long hauls in the Overland's MD-11 in FedEx colors but, after geting the PMDG NG I'm spoilt (is that a word :-eek) by the FMC, not so much the autopiloting; but researching and planning the flight; places to land for fuel, weather etc. I usually hand fly all SID and STARs myself and leave the cruise to autopilot if it is a long haul.
October 11, 200520 yr Nice topic, and very interesting answers :). I'm pretty flexible but my two hard rules are: 1 always start at the last airport and 2. no time compression. Correct flight number is common for me now but correct dep time is a challenge. Last night though I beat my AI double MKJP to KFLL though he cheated - he ended up going around :-bla - THAT was fun :)I usually fly Air Ja, American or Delta. I decide on a/c type and airline, then look at that airline's site to find a route starting from where I'm currently parked, and using the a/c I want to fly. If the combo is not available given rule #1, the I fly a 'shuttle' flight to get me to where I can fly what I really feel for.(Now that I put that in writing it seems kind of fruity :-eek :-lol )Sometimes when I get a really great a/c I 'm compelled to find routes to fly it - the LDS has me looking up 763 routes :)regards,Markhttp://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a319/markrey/lds1.jpgXPHomeSP2/FS9.1/3.2HT/1GIG/X700pro256 Regards, Mark
October 11, 200520 yr Usually I decide which continent, then an origin and destination for which I have good add-on scenery. Then, I check if an airline flies between those two places by checking http://www.eskyguide.com/search then pick a flight operated by an aircraft I have. If I don't have it, I can usually get the livery from Avsim. Then I check the Met Office's website http://www.metoffice.com/aviation/index.html and do a global metar and taf search, so I can see if any afcad's need changing so I get the correct takeoff and landing runways.I will also goto http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/ and get my flightplan generated, so I can enter it into the FMC.Mostly I fly in Europe, as the hops are quite short, and I rarely do legs of more than two hours. Sometimes I like to see some of my more exotic AI doing their stuff, and that may mean a flight in Asia, so I will set out to fly to busy airports such as Hong Kong and Tokyo Narita or Haneda. However, I often stand in my back garden, watching Heathrow arrivals, and get inspired. Sometimes though the weather generated by ASV is nothing like the real thing! Finally, I use FSAutoStart to shut down all those pesky memory-robbing process, and away we go.
October 11, 200520 yr Check your port-side engine, I think I see something stuck in the reverser. As for me, my flights are determined by what type of aircraft I will be flying, and, if the kids are participating (which is oftern :D), they pick the route. Sometimes rather interesting. They usually use ones where there is either lots of AI traffic or pretty scenery. My daughters favorite flight consists of taking off from Jackson Hole, circling the Tetons and Yellowstone, then returning to Jackson. My son, however, likes a Frontier A320 flight from Denver to Kennedy. When I choose, it's based on what I feel like flying. Bush flying in Alaska with a Beaver or C119, maybe scenic flying in a 195 or a G21, or perhaps even some military flights in an F16 or Mirage F1, or carrier operations in an F/A-18. Maybe even some long hauls in a 747, 777 or a340, and some shorter ones in A320s, 737s or 757s. Perhaps some commuter flights in a Lear 35 or 45, or a Gulfstream V, or a turboprop?Heck, I'll even take a 727 or DC-8 out on the rare vintage flight (vintage to me :-lol).I have over 300 aircraft installed in FS, and I've flown them all over the past 2 years. I will not choose a favorite, because the whims I go off on to decide what/when/how to fly are many. I frequent the GAs and Military aircraft more, I'd guess, but I really do fly them all.So I guess you'd say I use my heart as a guide on where to fly. It's not very efficient, but it's vastly rewarding. :)-Jeremy BurchThe Ozark DogfighterHappy Flying!Pilot-The friction locks are causing the throttle levers to stick.Mechanic- Umm, that's what they're there for...
October 11, 200520 yr Excellent site Drayton! I'm adding it to my bookmarks. It always amazes me that, even after perusing all the FS sites I can find, there is ALWAYS one more out there, I bet I discover or am pointed to one new FS site every week.-Jeremy BurchThe Ozark DogfighterHappy Flying!Pilot-The friction locks are causing the throttle levers to stick.Mechanic- Umm, that's what they're there for...
October 11, 200520 yr Fruity heck, that's a great idea. I'm amazed at the diversity of this topic. Keep posting, 'Simmers!!:D-Jeremy BurchThe Ozark DogfighterHappy Flying!Pilot-The friction locks are causing the throttle levers to stick.Mechanic- Umm, that's what they're there for...
October 11, 200520 yr Now with Fs passengers, I am re-invented all over again!D/L Posky's 747, and my old trusty 737, and have set up an airline that is nuts and bolts with hardly any money! So, flights are ones that make me money to survive and keep passengers alive!Having said that, I still follow news stories, and am currently with 747 in Sydney, planning a flight to Islamabad.Like other posters, I must leave from where I am last. So, if in a Robinson, up a mountain in Peru, I must get back to small airport, get single/double engine prop, to go to larger airport where I left my 737 or 747.I was in Hawaian Island hopping in float plane, having left 747 parked at Honolulu, when Earthuake happened in Pakistan. So, retrace steps and 747 now in flight preparation. It is pin tail on Donkey a bit, but news based. I have no idea what will take my attention next. I recall being in Malaga Spain, when a Discovery programme highlighted Darwina nd Galapilos(?) Islands, so I set off with 737 across Atlantic and S.America to Chile...This hobby is amazing where it takes you!
October 11, 200520 yr Months ago, to break once and for all this question, I started a permanent round the world flight from TFFR with an Air Canada LDS 767 to Toronto, then from Pierson to New York La Guardia on an American Airlines PMDG 737 NG, then Kennedy to Heathrow on the PSS BA Concorde, Gatwick to Johanesburg on the 747-200 RFP SAA, etc, etc. The principle is (a) to fly an existing route with the corresponding aircraft and airline whenever I can (I do have to cheat from time to time on the aircraft type though...), (:( always take off from the city I landed at (it can be from a different airport but from the same city, i.e land in La Guardia and take off from Kennedy), and © use a different type of aircraft each time so as to remain fluent on each of them. Given the size of my fleet of add-ons, that keeps me going for a while before having to fly the same aircraft again.I do not fly necessarily west to east but I do have sudden changes of latitudes and longitudes, such as after reaching Tokyo Narita coming from my initial departure in the Carribean as indicated above, I flew back to Vienna and then to Dubai before reaching Moscow on an Emirates SSW A310 and onward to Irkust (Russia) on the Tu 154 B2...So my only questions now are: Where can I fly to from this city, with which airline and which equipment? The answers are found on Internet on the site of the national airline.
October 11, 200520 yr I tend to fly to places I have visited. For example, I just returned from a cruise to the eastern Caribbean islands of St. Thomas and St. Martin. I went on an excursion to Pinel Island off the coast of the Dutch side of St. Martin. When I came home I hopped in my Winair BN-2 and flew over the island in FS9. I even saw our cruise ship docked at Phillipsburg!!! I felt like relaxing on the beach again!!Have fun!Airbus Al Kaupa Digital Storm purchased 8/17/2011; Win7x64: Asus P8P67 Deluxe; Intel i7 2600K@3,9 GHZ; nVidia GTX 560Ti; 8GB DDR3 1600 Corsair Dominator; Power Corsair HX 750W; Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD; 300GB WD VelociRaptor; 1TB Seagate.

October 11, 200520 yr Thanks for the remind."Chip" Barber is one of the good guys over there.I enjoy all his articles. His signature sign off,"THREE GREEN" says it all.I guess we are all Captain/navigators,some just fly to different horizons.I think this forum and its comments expressed here, reveal the true wonder of home siming. The world is our oyster, and the experience of adventure, exploration, and purpose lives, altho its only simulated. But somebody gotta start someplace,a library or ,why not here.Ya never know where a fellow simmer my wind up. October 11, 200520 yr "How many times have you started up your flight simulator and not been able to decide where you can fly from/to?"Kinda like, "To be, or not to be."FYI, a useful document that deals with your little problem is contained in "milsupp30.zip" - lists over 300 military airports around the world and includes navaids etc.Version 2.0 is currently in the file library; version 3.0 was just uploaded tonight. I'd wait for the newer version, if I were you.Check it out - let me know...Best regards,Bill
