3 dimensional clouds, really?

Try this. Set your distance in the weather to unlimited and then look at the clouds.

Cloud draw distance has always been a performance issue in flightsims and it goes hand in hand with how far to draw distant scenery textures/objects and to what level of detail. In the end there needs to be tradeoffs made and each sim makes different tradeoffs. Then there is the visibility issue that enters the mix. With lower visibility does a program really need to generate all that video data if it never going to show up?

In fact It work only using manually controlled weather and setting the visibility to 100 NM, and wow! it make a big difference and add a lot to the realism. Is there a way to have it with real weather (METAR) setting? It’s bad to be in an overcast area and always see the horizon...

This dome effect happens to me also. Could not find a way to fix it in settings...

@ Bugor, FYI check the above quote from this same thread.

I don't "set" my weather, always use the real thing, shame it doesn't depict overcast conditions better. I don't want to "fix" it, it should simulate real world conditions on it's own, without user intervention. If the conditons are overcast, then draw the clouds to the horizon, simple as that. If your system can't handle it, them make an option for those users to reduce cloud coverage how they see fit, don't take away from those users that can run full out. At least in that other sim, you could run full out, and it was up to you as the user to adjust accordingly. Give me the clouds, and if my system can't handle them, I'll make the adjustments, I don't need big brother limiting things in the sim because he thinks we can't figure things out for ourselves.Glen

Actually the sad thing is a lot of the complaints they get are exactly because of that. Because many can't seem to figure out things. They make some setting changes that mess things up then come here ranting about how rubbish it all is when in fact it is their settings that have messed it all up.You can usually figure it all out and so can I and many others. But quite often others cannot (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way), or just miss seeing something. It sure would be nice to have the options you mention and I guess eventually we'll get there somewhere. In the meantime you can set unlimited then download the weather. Job done.

Yes, I can do that. If I download the real weather I can get the actual conditions, then just go into the visibility and set it lower? I did try a while ago by lowering the cloud base, and it looked good, but as soon as you got a few hundred feet off the ground you got into the dreaded white out condition that still plagues the cloud weather system. Just extend them out to the horizon and allow "us" to adust as our systems allow, not much to ask.Glen

Sorry JasonX, but nothing can be done in the sim to make clouds touching the horizon. Even setting visibility to 100NM. Obvious when flying over the ocean (in coastal region) to be sure the relief flat.Otherwise, could you post some pict and explain your technique?Hope this will be fix in future update.;-(

Well there is no technique. What height do you have the clouds? They seem ok to me.

I think there is a misunderstanding between us. I’am using real weather and try to have clouds touching the horizon. You suggest to manually increase the visibility but it does not work. So I asked what your technique since you believe this is possible. The visibility have nothing to do with height...? What you point?

Get used to it. This is the best we can do. We need to be able to effectively allow users with low-end computers to be able to see some clouds. Sounds fair to us and it should to you guys too. We just cannot continue to cater only to the power users. Do you have any idea how much time it would take to be able to allow both low-end and hi-end computers users the ability to be able to see clouds all the way to the horizon? Do you know how far the horizon is? It's a long way, and it takes considerable work to be able to get this to work. I know, your thinking "plausible world" again. We do admit that that marketing slogan was not the best choice and neither was "ultra-realistic", but sometimes things change by the time you actually get to implementation stage of a project of this proportion. I'm honestly lost for words sometimes with the "rational" that gets thrown around here sometimes. As we have already suggested, make the stupid cloud distance adjustable, just like it is in that other simulator. Why do those people with higher end systems have to suffer these poor cloud condition visuals. Nobody has said that the folks with lower end systems will suffer anything, make it adjustable so everyone can enjoy to the level their system can sustain, really, you guys are unbelievable. Does anyone really read the "fair for everyone" suggestions that are given in these forums, or have you all got your minds made up that whatever is offered in the updates, must be the best for everyone. Well since the initial release, there have been a number of decisions that were made that "have not" improved the look of this sim, and reasonable solutions are being offered, and you guys continue to look at them all with a blind eye, it's really unfortunate. Things are being taken away, that don't need to be taken away, make the settings adjustable and everyone wins. I really hope this starts to sink in, everyone wins from the suggestions that are being made, nobody looses, how is that a bad thing.GlenEdit: Guys, people are only making suggestions that will benefit everyone in the long run. As things stand right now, those with higher end systems are having their experience diminished by Laminar because they are trying to cater to those with lower end systems. I don't have any problem with that, but do it in a way that benefits everyone by making settings adjustable . Don't just start taking things totally away from the simulator, that's all were / I'm asking, is that really so hard to understand and see the logic? I didn't have to fly under a dome of cloud when I bought this back in December, now I do, how is that an improvement. It is for some, certainly not for all. A little slider allowing you to adjust the cloud distance, just like in FSX, there I said it, is all that is being asked for.

I have to agree with Muskoka. I understand the need to cater to a wide range of hardware, but you do that by offering a range of options and not by locking your software to the lowest-common denominator. "Get used to it," you say. Why doesn't that same logic apply to other areas like road and auto-gen density? High dynamic range lighting? Shadows and various shader effects? Those are adjustable to a wide degree, so why not cloud visibility? Just add the appropriate cheeky warnings so that low-end users aren't surprised. "Setting cloud visibility to 'Infinite' will melt your GPU!" ... that sort of thing.

I think some development groups believe that once you begin a dialog with "the users", it causes problems. I just believe that a good open dialog is the way to go, but apparently they just do not buy into that. So, here is a spokes person addressing the concerns of the troops, being careful not to make any harsh promises.Dear fellow simmers,After viewing many posts concerning the clouds we thought it was time to let all of you know what is happening, and we sincerely apologize for not addressing this with you sooner. We truly wish to make XP10 a product that can be used by all types of flyers from beginners to RW pilots. We are experiencing some difficulty in our cloud code which is preventing even hi-end systems to effectively generate clouds to the horizon without crippling their systems. We are now in process of looking at this issue to find a different approach to what we are doing presently. I am confident that the design we are seeking will be found in the very near future. I ask that you please be patient. Once we come to a conclusion on what needs to be done, we will begin working on the code base. I will get back to you once I have more information.RegardsThe XP10 teamNow what the heck is so hard about that?
