Water Reflections?

Featured Replies

I was flying the RV6 upside down yesterday to increase my upside down stat. I went ahead and got real low to the water to where the tip of the tail was a foot or two from making contact. I noticed that my plane did not reflect off of the water, I could only see a shadow. I just want to make sure this is how it is supposed to be. I know FSX had water that would reflect the plane. Seems strange that with the graphical update to Flight this would not be included. On a side note I also found out that skimming the tail across the water does not work real well. I know its probably not supposed to but the instant the tip of the tail hit the water it had the same effect as hitting a brick wall.

Hi Todd,If you touched any tail of any airplane on any body of water it would have the same effect as hitting a concrete wall. It would probably rip the whole tail off the plane just before the rest of it would cartwheel over and over until the bits and pieces would slow enough to sink. Not likely that any pilot would drown though. Wouldn't know what hit him.We used to have a very fast SeaRay (70 MPH+ indicated) and I guarantee you that if someone fell out of the boat at that speed on rough water it might do a bit more than just hurt them. To have your body hit the side of a wave at any of those kinds of speeds would be the same as jumping out of a car and being stopped by a concrete culvert.Ever fall over when water sking at about 30MPH? Ouch!Kind regards,

Never been water skiing. The worst experience I have had with hard hitting water was when I was about 8. I thought I would be "mister cool" and do a head first dive from a rather high diving board. As fate would have it I panicked as soon as I jumped and ended up doing a maneuver somewhat between a cannon ball and a belly flop. It is a good thing that the life guard was on the ball that day because it knocked the wind out of me. All I remember is that it really hurt and learned that diving boards are evil.

Concerning water reflections I read this in this forum some time ago :'"One of the Flight Team explained this, near the end of the beta . . . which seems to still apply:- The shoreline is not animated (no waves coming up on the beaches).- On low graphic settings you will not see animated water or reflection. All you will see will be the non-animated "waves" (color variations) that are part of the underlying terrain texture .- On higher graphic settings you should see animated water and reflections (but only if you have a D3D10+ video card).- The animated water bump map is not affected by wind or weather.- The water always animates no matter how high you are (But the animation can be really hard to see at higher flying distances).- They plan to continue tweaking it over time to try to improve it. "It's an extract from this thread:http://forum.avsim.n..._1#entry2290735Guy

Thanks for the info. I will have to double check my settings. I know I have it on high and I think the terrain is reflecting but not the plane. I will play around with it.

Thing is, we're talking about choppy oceans, harbors and bays.. They'll reflect light, not actual objects. Even the small lakes in the game are using a wavey water model so in either case likelyhood of an airplane reflecting off that kind of water is very unlikely anyway. You would need an almost calm flat lake type body to see an airplane reflection and even then it depends on the lighting.

That is actually a really good point, but I thought Hawaii was known for its blue crystal waters. Never been there so I really can't say first hand. In the end its not a big deal, I was just curious.

Blue and crystal, sure, but not flat and mirror-like. For example, in seven years of working out of Hangars 104 and 105 at Kaneohe MCAS, the big ones right on the bay, I can count on my fingers the number of dead calm summer days where the the bay was nearly perfectly flat and I could see the town of Kaneohe across the bay reflected in the water. And that's in a protected bay. The ocean itself outside the sandbar was still in enough motion to prevent any kind of recognizable reflections.

I guess that pretty much answers my question. I guess we will see what they do with Alaska, never been there either, but I can imagine there is a calm lake somewhere.

The problem is that the lakes and even small ponds all have the animated water bump map . . . which is not affected by Flight's wind/weather settings. So, unless this is changed, we won't ever see a calm lake in Flight.

That's too bad. That is the one big thing that makes things look bad to my eye, streams and lakes with big ocean swells on them. To me it totally ruins reality, whether that is in FSX or Flight.Kind regards,
