Joshua Howard Interview with AVSIM

Why should users who prefer AI over MP have to pay extra for their preferred core feature?
Why should users who prefer long haul jets over GA planes have to pay for them? The typical new user has never even heard of FSX. He doesn't know about AI planes. For him, the MP experience is exactly what he's used to.You've had the same opportunities as I have to study Flight and get some idea of Microsoft's focus and direction. Does it really seem like they want to add AI, with all the problems it would cause mutltiplayer, and do they want to do away with multiplayer to solve the problems, for those people who prefer AI? They want people in multiplayer. So, for now at least, there's no AI "option."Moving ground vehicles? Well, maybe. AI aircraft? I don't see it happening any time soon, if ever.Hook

Most gamers (the "typical new user" who has "never even heard of FSX") expect BOTH MP and AI, because some of the most popular games include both . . . and games like Mass Effect and Oblivion and Skyrim are only AI/single player games (or primarily). The same is true for most racing games . . . that provide BOTH AI and MP racing.Yes, I've had "the same opportunities as I have to study Flight and get some idea of Microsoft's focus and direction" as you. Yet you seem to feel that Flight is perfect as it is, and I feel that it is going to fail . . . unless they expand the simulator aspects of the game . . . which includes AI and ATC. In my opinion, MS has made some really bad decisions with Flight, by catering primarily to gamers. And these bad decisions will continue to turn flight simmers off. And I just don't see Flight competing as a game.I've stated this since day one of the beta testing.

Hm, this seems more difficult than I first thought that it would be. So let's evaluate the options regarding AI/ATC:ATC without AI------------------Probably very easy to bring back to the Flight core. The code is all there and might need little editing. The voice files can be ruesed from FSX, might need a little editing (copy-paste jobs as with EditVoicePack) to add some airport identifiers.Tail numbers to identify player planes could be generated and assigned by the system, i.e. each player has a unique tail number for each of his or her planes that remain associated with the player account. This would avoid adding more UI options to make the tail number editable and also avoid x amount of players flying with the same tail number,The result would be something similar to the X-Plane9 ATC. Players can state their intentions at airports when flying online, but there would be little interaction with ATC otherwise.IMO this should be a FREE addition to the core.Further additions to Flight could include, but not limited to:Ground AI (cars, boats, people)----------------------------------------<your ideas here>GA Aircraft AI (without ATC)-----------------------------------<your ideas here>Airline Traffic AI with made-up airline names (without ATC)-------------------------------------------------------------------------<your ideas here>Airline Traffic AI with RW airline names and liveries (without ATC)---------------------------------------------------------------------------------<your ideas here>AI Traffic with VFR ATC-----------------------------<your ideas here>AI Traffic with VFR and IFR ATC-----------------------------------------<your ideas here>

Regards,

Tom

I could argue that AI should be a basic core feature, so it should be included as part of Flight's free core download.
And I could argue that everything I want should be included as part of the free core download!

I think the administrator on the fshost-server felt the same, there where login-warnings, ip-bans and lot measures taken to stop the rouge behavour... Pretty amusing to watch... Almost like being a moderator on these forums I guess ;)-

Yes, you could. Good luck with that. :)

Doesn't the Flight MP have some sort of skill levels that you can select to find people in online sessions with the same level?Maybe they could add something for users to tag other players, so in the future trolls will only be put into sessions with other trolls.

Well since MS Flight doesnt have permanent game-rooms this probably wont be a problem here. Rooms are created / closed as players leave and join, so it will be more difficult for rogue players to "gang up". If your in a session and you've blocked another pilots gamertag... I think that person cant enter your game-room.-

Here is something to think about, if you have to pay for AI and ATC, what happens to people who dont buy it and fly with people who do have it on MP?

To the player without AI addon it would look like the player with AI would be dodging invisible aircraft or waiting to take off for no reason. If only one player could recive ATC the player without ATC would have to be treated like an aircraft with inoperable radio. So basically the experience would be broken if just one player had AI.A very good reason why AI should be either offline only or a free core upgrade!-

This could easily be solved by just having Flight automatically disabling AI air traffic when in MP.

Or display the "arrow-planes" it currently uses for AC that are not on the user's computer.Or replace them with some installed plane models like FSX does. And let the MP host decide whether the session should contain AI or not.

Regards,

Tom

I like the option for the host to allow or deny AI, perhaps ATC could also be a feature turned on/off by the host, give the people more choices the happier they will be.

But MS like people to stay online to make multiplayer crowded, at least on xbox they want people to be "always on, always connected" as they say. They are also working on multiplayer missions, but if they release an offline only AI-traffic-pack they would reduce people being online. How would that work out?Btw Mr. Howard should listen to W.A. Ward. Tom's interview was very good and revealed subtle criticism of both the community and the deal with third party, I think even Forza Motorsport fared better with their hardcore players, even when they included dumbed down controlls in the car-simulator.-
