Even when you are offline? What I have discovered, much to my surprise, is that you are never truly "offline" unless you physically disconnect yourself from the router.
Yeah I was surprised to learn - even though you don't go into the multiplayer screen and choose to join or host, you are still online - basically in a constant state of multiplayer, when you fly, and at any given time you might run across another player that happens to be on the same server and the same location I guess. Mutliplayer is not my thing, so I did the most I could do and that was going into Multiplayer and setting my option to private.I do not mind at all being signed in to Live, but I prefer - at least for now - to do my flying privately.

That would mean the GUID numbers of the products installed and in use would be constantly monitored by some server and recorded, and that modification of the platforms content is also quickly detected i suppose with associated ip .

From what I've seen online, even on multiplayer servers if you want to fly by yourself you just have to fly away from the big island "free" area, I rarely see anyone else flying around Oahu or Maui, everyone seems to congregate around Hilo.

Just set your Multiplayer session to "Private"... then no one can join.

suggesting that I make a friend play ATC or radio felt a but rude
A scooby doo "Huh???"
I don't sit on a chair and close my eyes pretending to fly talking to a friend that sits on a another chair pretending to be the ATC.
Another scooby doo "Huh???
And just swiping it off by having a friend pretent to be the ATC is not innovative.
"What's innovation got to do... got to do with it. What's innovation but a second-hand novelty." (apologies to Tina Turner)If you thought I meant having someone in the same room with you... well that is not was I was talking about. It is nonetheless, a good idea.I take it you have never flown in a "real" simulator. You actually have an instructor (just a few feet behind you...) acting as ATC. Here in the U.S. it is required to have that instructor if those sim hours are going to be used e.g. toward the issuance of a license. So I hope you see I was not being rude but in fact, quite serious. You don't "close your eyes" or pretend anything... the person takes on the role of ATC and uses correct ATC phraseology. Also, another example, I have had instruction on IVAO on how ATC works in the UK. The guy I worked with was quite impressive in his communication skills and knowledge of phraseology. No closing the eyes or pretending except for the fact he was taking the role of ATC and me that of 747 pilot. :dirol:
I talk about "real radio communication" and ATC as they where in previous MS flightsims with for example multiple choice
I do not understand how a multiple choice response to a canned instruction is "real radio communication"... FSX ATC seemed more to me like playing a round of "voice mail jail". One can, I suppose use it to learn a bit of "ATC Speak". How to take it seriously? I never could.
Especially since ATC and "radio messages" have been used on a previous versions of ms flightsims with greate success in my opinion.
I have only used FSX and FLIGHT... and like I said... FSX ATC is too much like voice mail jail.If you want "real radio communication" you need to involve yourself with real people... be it IVAO or a knowledgeable friend etc. It is one thing to listen to a canned .wav file and reply with a button or to mumble something back. It's a whole 'nuther story to understand and follow "live" ATC and communicate appropriately / effectively with them.

I'm still running my beta version with all the bells and whistles. I think I'm truly disconnected since I can't get any new DLC or aerocaches. But that's okay, I'll stick with it the way it is. After all, it was free. I have no interest in multiplayer anyway. I think someone also thought I was supposed to remove all of that as a beta tester. No, I was to remove it IF I install the full release version, which I have no interest in doing really. I don't think the way FLIGHT is in its current state, I will ever expand on it. It's okay to fire up everyone once in a while when bored, but then after about 20-30 minutes, it becomes boring too. But I think I am truly running offline.

As this is a game and I want to be able to play it at any time, am or pm, I don't want to be dependant on any of my friends anywhere in the world to get ATC.

It's a game. I hope no one take it too seriously. Anyway, "ATC speak" is bound by sertain rules that will have 95% of what most people need within "voice mail jail".
If you want "real radio communication" you need to involve yourself with real people...
I want "real radio communication" and ATC in Flight the same way I want a real airplane in Flight. I want it to be as realistic as possible and at the same time stay inside my computer.

I have seen several posts over the years on the FSX forum complaining about the default ATC. I guess I am very much in the minority in that regard, I never really had issue with the ATC and never found that it bugged me. After all, we are not flying in the real world, we are flying with a simulator - game - on the computer. I have always found the default ATC sufficient for my purposes. Can't even say it ever led me astray leaving me out there in the wild blue yonder. I have logged several hundred hours in FSX - mainly flying the tubelines on medium-long haul flights, ILS/IFR.Perhaps my tastes and expectations are way toned down from many other flight simmers...I can truly say with Flight so far, the lack of ATC - especially with the environment we are flying in and the type of flying we are doing - has not really bugged me, and is not the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of what Flight really needs right now. That would probably change as the sim grows and more aircraft < larger > and more distances < longer> become available to us < hopefully>.I guess I am just an example, of the old adage " different strokes for different folks". But I am having fun in Flight so far indeed.

What I miss the most is AI traffic. I'm not into MP, and I have found Flight's MP more annoying than immersive. I also miss ATIS (which is connected with ATC), along with Real World Weather (and more configurable weather options).Until Flight has AI traffic, I don't really see the need for full ATC, since one pretty much relies on the other. FSX's ATC wasn't perfect, but it is way better than having nothing at all.

Maybe we should make another poll, but keep that one focused on the AI/ATC aspects. But before someone makes it, I think we should discuss the questions and possible answer options here, in order to get some meaningful results.I will try to think about this until tomorrow...

Tom

Agreed, FSX's atc isn't perfect and at times yakety sax should be playing in the background when it stumbles and trips over itself having you dance around airports and approving 3 planes separated by a 1/2 mile in for landings on the same runway. But even with all its sillyness it works well most of the time.. Heck, I've often times parked next to the runway and spent 30 minutes or more watching and laughing at the AI's awful landings. Never gets old watching an MD-80 bucking down the runway for a perfect 8 and 1/2 point landing. :LMAO: Neither are perfect but it's at least something to give the illusion you're in a living world.

OK, here's my proposal for a poll. It ran a little long, so I skipped the ATC aspect.Do you think we should include the ATC parts in the poll as well or make a separate poll for that? Also a question to the mods: Is it possible to generate an anonymous report of the poll to see what individual users voted on the various questions? Here's the poll, still lacking some intro text:1) How would you describe your experience with flight simulation in general, also considering your experience with other flight sims?

  • I'm new to flight simulation
  • I use flight sims occasionally but have not much experience
  • I'm an experienced flight simmer, but have not much time for this hobby
  • I'm a flight sim veteran, spending a lot of time on this hobby

2) Have you tried Microsoft Flight?

  • No
  • I tried it, but decided not to use it any longer
  • Yes, I use it along with other flight simulators I have
  • Yes and it is the only flight sim I use at the moment

3) Do you use MS Flight in multiplayer, flying with other people?

  • I don't know / haven't tried Flight
  • Yes
  • No, I fly off-line

4) What is your opinion regarding dynamic elements in MS Flight's world, such as airport vehicles, cars, boats, airplanes, animals, people?

  • I miss some signs of life
  • I don't need that when I'm flying
  • I have not tried MS Flight

5) Would you like to see some moving non-aircraft elements in Flight, such as cars driving on the roads?

  • No
  • Yes
  • I don't care
  • I don't use Flight

6) Would you like to see other aircraft traffic in Flight that are flown by the computer, not other players?

  • Yes
  • Yes, but only small propeller aircraft
  • Yes, but I want small propeller aircraft and big airline traffic
  • No
  • I don't care
  • I don't use Flight

7) If Microsoft were to include big jet airline traffic with Flight, would you be willing to pay for it?

  • I don't use Flight
  • Only if this download package would include real-world airlines
  • Yes, whatever adds airliners to Flight, even ficticious airlines, I will buy it
  • No, I want airline traffic, but it should be free
  • I don't care about airline traffic

8) Did you like this poll?

  • Yes, gimme more!
  • Boooooring!!!
  • I am a robot

Regards,

Tom

Thanks to everyone involved in this interview, this sheds a lot of light on this hot topic.

If this information was given a lot sooner the rant about MS flight was a lot less i think.

I have beta tested it and i must say that i was pleasantly surprised how it worked and felt and i hope that they progress in a positive way.

I hope that they will prove to all the nay-sayers that they where wrong because it has a lot of potential.

p.s i also want track-ir

My regards, Jan

I hope that they will prove to all the nay-sayers that they where wrong because it has a lot of potential.

This is one of the things I don't understand. Wrong about what exactly?

I want to fly a TWA constellation from my local international airport to anywhere I choose in the world.

I want to have access to thousands of freeware and payware airplanes and accurately detailed scenery.

I want to fly to places that I am going to, or have been to. And when I get there, I want to fly in domestic liveries and be surrounded in the air by other domestic carriers.

Is Flight's "potential" going to re-give me these things that it has already taken away on purpose?

I like Flight as a game just fine. However, if I had to choose between it and FS, the depth of the FS series makes it a winner without a question. Of course, the pro Flight folks will always be able to say "just wait, the potential", but so far Joshua has been very clear that this game is not designed for my needs. And here's the other side to it- if MS ever does tear down these walls and releases Flight as a sim (I can't even imagine this...), wouldn't that actually prove the nay-sayers right instead of wrong?
