Hi All! Opinion... Which ORBX?

Featured Replies

Hey Everyone...I am upgrading today to the FTX Orbx. I see there are quite a few... I'm looking at the NA Blue USA/Canada and PNW one... Does that cover ALL of the US and Canada and more of the PNW? Or should I be looking at something else?I'm looking to get as much of North America as I can for the least amount. Or do I have to buy them all separate starting with the PNW? I am also looking at getting REX 2.0 after words... I currently use FSGenesis mesh... So... Between those three I should be all set? Or should I be looking at other stuff as well for the ''look'' of the game? From what I understand and have read, most folks use the Orbx, Rex and a Mesh of some sort... I think I am on the right track. Thanks for ANY input! :)Randy

No, as the title suggests that scenery pack includes only the PNW region (I say 'only', but of course it's a huge region). The other packs (like NRM; Northern Rocky Mountains etc) then cover other discrete regions. In terms of GA flying, each area is large, but in terms of an IFR airline flyer, it won't take you long to fly out of the Orbx area.... And again in terms of the whole Lower 48 USA, the current Orbx FTX featured areas are pretty small. That sounds like more negatives than there really are; all I am saying is that your references to wanting as much of the USA as possible makes it sound like these regions may not be the best option for you. ......They are amazing, but for the VFR flyers in the main I would honestly say, who will stay in the covered regions, exploring the airfields in relatively slow aircraft.

David.

You'll have to buy them separately starting with the Pacific Northwest (PNW). On the site they have a link to show you what the software area covers (thru Google Earth). PNW is highly recommended first. Best regards,Jim

I'm looking to get as much of North America as I can for the least amount.
Since ORBX only covers a very small portion of North America at the moment you would probably get more bang for the buck by buying GEX North America and Ultimate Terrain US. That being said, if you dont mind spending all your time in the upper Northwest of NA then get the corresponding ORBX sceneries that cover the area in which you want to fly, howwever if you like to spend time in the rest of North America and dont want to be confined to just those area get GEX and UT USA.Personally, the ORBX purchases I have made dont really get much use since I dont really fly the PNW area very much and typically fly airliners from the lower west coast thru the mid west and up to the upper and lower east coast, of which ORBX does not yet cover, although they will be making a Northeastern part of the us which I believe will cover the Maine/Mass area or somewhere around there. I had always been an ORBX laggard meaning that when their stuff rist appeared it took me ages to get around to buying it since I didn't really care much for the areas they produced. Then they had a bunch of 50% off sales a few years ago and I dove in and bough all the stuff in my sig. Needless to say, I should have listened to my gut and not have purchased since I have only used the hundreds of dollars of stuff I got from them a hand full of times and its pretty much been the biggest waist of money I have ever spent in my flight sim hobby. I'm by no means saying that its no good, it just covers areas (PNW and Australia) that I dont really care to fly around and doens't really suite my flying style, except of course for Australia since it covers the whole country, but I just dont like to fly there.Basically it just depends on where you like to fly mostly and the type of flying you enjoy the most. If you dont really want to feel stuck in one area the get GEX and UT USA so you'll be convered over the whole US, or look into Sim Saavy photoreal textures that also cover the whole US and are sold on a seperate HD.
Or do I have to buy them all separate starting with the PNW?
Yes, they are sold seperately.Good luck in whatever you choose. Remember that you can always buy UT USA and GEX North America and use them in conjunction with ORBX North American sceneries since the UT and GEX will fill in the areas that ORBX doens't cover.

Ya know, the more I think about it, I think I mean to get GEX...along with REX.... There is so much stuff out there I am getting confused... :( So, to help clairify, what does UT provide that GEX does not then? Thanks a lot for the input thus far.

Randy

GEX is textures, UTX is landclass, roads, and river placement. They go very well together. Here is a good starting point for the US:FSGenesis or SceneryTech for the terrain meshUTX for the landclassGEX for the texturesAs for airport sceneries, everything from FSDreamteam, FlyTampa, and FlightBeam are top notch. For weather, water and related textures (such as airport runways/taxiways) I use Active Sky 2012 and love it. I use ORBX PNW and NZSI, but as stated they are best reserved for VFR flying down low.

UTX is a landclass product with extras! It considerably increases the realism, consistency and complexity of the terrain you fly over by arranging the existing FSX terrain assets in a far more accurate and lifelike fashion. It also adds additional objects such as bridges, nightlighting more complex roads etc.GEX replaces the default FSX textures with better ones - it complements UTX perfectly.

Cheers!

You are on the right track, I would still recommend picking up SceneryTech or FSGenesis as well. SceneryTech is only $19 for all of North America. It will place cities and mountains in the correct areas.http://www.scenerytech.com/products/landclass/northamerica.htm

That's the exact combo I started with when I first got into FSX....then ORBX, PMDG, RealAir, Carenado et al got their fingers into my wallet...:(

Cheers!

Cool thanks guys. I already have the FSGenesis installed... So, now, just need UTX and REX and I should be set... GEX installed. :(

Just an FYI, I think UTX is supposed to be installed before GEX, but not sure. Your best bet is to check out simforums for the scoop on that. It's not complex or anything, but just takes one or two extra steps. Sorry I don't recall the exact procedure.

Yea, the installer mentions something about that. :) About having to un-install then re-install GEX... But the installer does it all or something. :(

Randy, if you are looking for expanse, hard to beat the entire Australia and Tasmania for $$ value. Even so, I find myself flying more around the homeland, which is the US.
