April 7, 201214 yr Author IS there a chance of 2011 mother boards being released even if Ivy Bride-E processor is not going to be out until later this year or early next year? I would like to use the Sandy Bridge-E processor for now and then replace it with the Ivy E CPU later. I know I could get the 2011 motherboard for Sandy Bridge and use Ivy Bride-E CPU on it.. But I want the new Z77 chipset on the motherboard. You're a bit confused here Manny. Z77 is a chipset for the socket 1155, not 2011. If you want a SB-E now you'll need to get an X79 / LGA2011 board now and then swap the CPU for an IB-E when released. The IB-E chipset won't be released until IB-E is released, just like Z77 & IB
April 7, 201214 yr Ah OK.. Thx :) I am itching to know if the upcoming IB is better for FSX than SB-E. I too may not jump to IB without knowing this. Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
April 8, 201214 yr I wont be upgrading my SB. From my research, these CPU's are intended for,as simon says, for efficiency and onboard graphics performance. That's been the case with every process shrink since Intel began its Tick-Tock cadence. Upgrading from a Tock to the next Tick generally hasn't been worth it. Only those willing to spend a wad of cash chasing that last little bit of performance do it. Conroe to Penryn was arguably worth it if you were overclocking. That's the thing though, we've been spoiled by the huge overclocks Intel chips have been capable of since Conroe, and each generation going to a bit higher in clock speeds, that when something comes out that doesn't meet that expectation it's a little disappointing. I'm upgrading cos I skipped SNB, so the performance jump easily justifies the price. I'm just reading AnandTech's Z77 preview and something else which looks interesting to me as an FSXer is Lucid's Virtu MVP technology. I don't come near to fully understanding it, but it might go a ways to giving us a "smoother" experience, which I see time and again being argued about in comparison to frame rate. Cheers, Mike
April 8, 201214 yr Is it only me, or am I reading basically the same performance in clock by clock in SB compared to IB? And the temperatures... LOL.
April 8, 201214 yr Is it only me, or am I reading basically the same performance in clock by clock in SB compared to IB? And the temperatures... LOL. I am starting to wonder how good these chips are even going to be. The IB lineup seems to be 'crumbling' in terms of "impressiveness" just before release.
April 8, 201214 yr They also wrote in the review that the heat might be due to engineering sample. But seriously, one month before the release, and the engineering sample has 96degrees @4.8, while SB at 5.2 is singing around 65c? Not in relation and I don't believe Intel is going to bring down the temps one third in a month, while they previously spent months and years developing the chip. The only poo thing is that you need IB to run PCIE3.
April 8, 201214 yr The only poo thing is that you need IB to run PCIE3. Also, wouldn't the temps of the chips be really cool? If they are running on less voltage doesn't that = less heat? I am starting to worry that this might not provide any benefit in FSX unless you have extremely dense autogen.
April 8, 201214 yr It should be worthy of an upgrade! Come on Ben... You don't even have to upgrade. i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB
April 8, 201214 yr Come on Ben... You don't even have to upgrade. ? I wasn't talking about upgrading my rig....
April 8, 201214 yr ? I wasn't talking about upgrading my rig.... I know, but you told me earlier you were going to get Ivy Bridge. Nevermind! i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB
April 9, 201214 yr I know, but you told me earlier you were going to get Ivy Bridge. Nevermind! Maybe around August but not now... I will have to mow lawns all summer!
April 11, 201214 yr Author http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=33270643&postcount=100 http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2237805&page=6 First tests seem to confirm that these chips overclock more or less like SB. Is there going to be enough crow in the world for the Tri-Gate jump-the-gunners plates? :P
April 11, 201214 yr I am starting to wonder how good these chips are even going to be. It seems that there is very large variation within the chips that are available at the moment. I bet that Intel will start binning these chips later on. 3770K ---> 3870K ---> 3970K etc
April 11, 201214 yr Author Do you seriously think that binning is going to make them that much better? 100MHz maybe?
April 11, 201214 yr The question is, will the triple threat be worth the upgrade? Ivy + PCIe 3 + GTX 680 MSFS
