April 5, 201214 yr just dicovered there no water where there shouldn't be land I am utterly confused by this statement ...
April 5, 201214 yr Author Ahhaaa --can see your point carrotroot. I've started flying with a few guys In the CYPL-CPV8-CNM5-CYRL area of Canada. They're flying FSX I think and although I have it I really dislike it. I was hoping with a bit of adjusting I would be able to fly the circuits in X-Plane but sadly X-Planes scenery does not add up at all--It's just miles of Trees, 'n' trees, 'n' trees whereas it should be wet and watery lakes 'n' Tundra (Theres no water where there shouldn't be land) Sorry about the confusion. Have a look at the Google Flightplan map--then at X-Planes offerings and you'll understand my disapointment. <http://www.lnamanager.ch/flight-planner/index.php#> If you or anyone knows where I could obtain scenery for this --What should be interesting area--please let me know....thanks (Just noticed where you're stationed--now try and imagine Florida without the Everglades!) April 6, 201214 yr The reason why you are seeing land instead of water is because OSM database, which X-Plane 10 scenery is derived from, currently does not show any lakes in the region for several hundred kilometers. http://www.openstreetmap.org/?minlon=-93.843335876465&minlat=51.023332824707&maxlon=-93.82332824707&maxlat=51.043336639404 I don't know of any scenery package for an area of this size. You may want to look into purchasing X-Plane 9.70 since Global Scenery v9 used a different set of data, I believe it was Vmap0 for its water bodies in this region. http://mapserver.flightgear.org/map/?lon=-93.793056&lat=51.066945&zoom=12

Adding lakes in OSM (open street map) is fairly easy, but time consuming. I will take a look at that area and add what/when I can. A number of folks from the forum have been doing lake adding for a number of weeks now, that's the good news, the bad news is that I surmise from what I read that we must wait for the XPX folks to go back to OSM and pick up the new stuff and update the sim scenery. The more folks get involved with OSM and make these corrections and additions the better for XPX in the long run. This does not help you in the short term, hope you can find addons to help you. EDIT: I just took a look at that general area, holy cow! Now, that's a bunch of lakes! I think its going to take a concerted effort by many folks to get all that updated. I also see that the base map ( in the Edit function) is not that great, cannot zoom down more than a zoom 14 level. But it still is possible, may not be as accurate as say doing a lake in Northern Wisconsin, but you work with what you have. I did a couple of small lakes in about 5 minutes. April 6, 201214 yr Author You Guys are brill with your suggestions/advice as although I've been into design (Building AutoCad) I've never delved into anything like this. I am going to try and get into it along with the airports as a Guy called Chris who does some stunning scenery/airport work has given me some advice and help on that side. His work if you didn't already know:-- http://forums.x-pilot.com/index.php/topic/3069-yssy-sydney-airport-photo-scenery/ I've got a couple of installations of v9 fully loaded so I'll follow suggestions in that direction. It looks awful in v10 but looking at the Google planner it should be one tasty and interesting area to fly as in reality it is where the roads end--and life relies totally on Bushcraft. Cheers All appreciated. Should be able to get in close with this which is a great flight planner anyway:-- www.lnamanager.ch/flight-planner/index.php# Spec. April 8, 201214 yr Minnesota has 10,000 lakes alone and Manitoba like 100,000 lakes. Fly, upper midwest and priaries hope too more lakes in Canada. Hope they fix Canada more.

Unfortunately "they" turns out to be "us." Again, XPX is only as good as the OSM data that is presented to Laminar, and that data is built by OSM input from users, lakes and roads. You, can help, sign up for an account at OSM and edit away. Of course please be as accurate as you can. Just a few lakes each day, with a lot of users will make the difference. April 9, 201214 yr Always keep in mind that simply editing the OSM maps does not mean that you will see your edits in X-Plane anytime soon. Unfortunately "they" turns out to be "us."... As you duely noted in an earlier post, "us" turns back into "them" once you're done adding 1, 10, or 10,000 lakes.... Add all you want to OpenSourceMaps - it's all for naught until they (Laminar Research) are able to re-cut the files to bring in your OSM edits into the world of X-Plane. There is no telling when or how often, if ever, these updates will take place. Could be weeks, months, or even years before they decide to do anything about it. Adding data into OSM is a good and noble thing to do as it does improve the maps for all the world to use. If you do add items, add them with care and precision. Personally, I've added hundreds if not thousands of water elements to OSM since the XP10 demo was released, as well as correcting roads, coastlines, and other elements in my home regions. Unfortunately, week after week of no action and idle chatter makes me wonder if there is any plan to update this data at all. I'd love to be proven wrong with this statement, but I do not expect any OSM updates to make it into X-Plane 10 in calendar year 2012. In fact, I am concerned that the next OSM data upgrade will end up occurring with the release of "XP11". Please, Laminar Research... prove me wrong! I beg you! :)
April 9, 201214 yr Adding lakes, roads and such to OSM for the ulterior motive of having it appear in X-Plane! Surely you jest! j/k then again I added my house ...

Ahhhh GreggGerm, You just burst my bubble!!! Here I am today, just editing away, adding lakes, correcting those roads that go through the farmers field, etc. etc. Now I am leaving slumped shouldered, holding my breath and stomping my feet!! Well, actually your right, I do not hear anything much about LR picking up new data let alone a time frame. Eh, I needed a break anyway. June 27, 201312 yr get the osm database How is that going to help? I too found some of the key detail such as river missing. In my area: CYRO/CYOW entire section of river is missing. CYRO has a water lane next to the Ottawa river and it is dry land in Xplane 10. I just checked OSM and the river detail is there. It will be a severe map error if this river is missing, so the data should have already existed before LR used the data. Since I can't change it Xplan10 is off my HD until the whole thing is fixed. I thought I could fix it with WED 1.2 but I was wrong. Oh Well. Vu Pham i7-13700K 5.2 GHz OC, 64 GB RAM, RTX5090, SSD for Sim, SSD for system. MSFS2020, XP-12, DCS
June 27, 201312 yr Here's good quote from Ben Supnik back in April re: missing water bodies and OSM: http://developer.x-plane.com/2013/04/if-its-not-blue-you-know-what-to-do/ Looks as though OSM recuts will be on their way ... Danny Hicks
June 27, 201312 yr The inability to easily add water to scenery is definitely a drawback in X-Plane 10, but the tradeoff is reportedly better overall performance. Instead of constructing scenery on the fly, it's all ready to go. CYRO has a water lane next to the Ottawa river and it is dry land in Xplane 10. I just checked OSM and the river detail is there. It will be a severe map error if this river is missing, so the data should have already existed before LR used the data. There were several larger-scale errors/issues with the XP10 scenery generation. It's entirely possible that the Ottawa River was missing, considering the state of North American water bodies was horrendous in 2011 and remains troubled even to this day. However, it could be a case similar to Botany Bay in Sydney, Australia - the water was in OSM, but something hiccuped in the processing to make it not reproduce in the sim. The Ottawa River, among others, are probably on the short list of areas needing attention, as they are fairly well publicized issues.
