Really sorry- but not for me

Featured Replies

I am sincerely sorry if my words sound discouraging.

Not discouraging at all. AVSIM prides in pioneering and innovating to bring our readers better readability and access. So we make a few changes here and there, test things out, and if they work they stick. If not, we abandon the change and move along knowing we tried it on for a fit and it wasn't for us.

I know it may confuse some when large changes take place, but I have a feeling once our habits update, our eyes adjust to where they need to shift to get what we want to read and the dust settles, this is going to be a very unique and outstanding front page.

Sincerely,

Chase

Many thanks for improving the site. It took me all of two seconds to get used to it and it's great to be able to open the forum in the same window at last.

I'm not sure why we need an enormous vanity list of Editorial Staff on the right hand side as I don't need to know who everyone is but hopefully that will be replaced by advertising at some stage!

All in all though a vast improvement on what was beginning to look like a very old fashioned website. Congratulations.

I had to grin at that. It does appear that way doesn't it. I agree with you. Time for us to have a staff page and leave that area for avertising or more features, and there are plenty of those to be had.

So you prefer advertising instead of a listing of all the dedicated volunteer staff that hep to provide to you all the AVSIM services -

'vanity list'

'I don't need to know who everyone is'

St Mawgan,

That's the message I get from your post:

Don't care who we all are but you do want us all to keep working..................

Nice.

I prefer advertising, yes, you read correctly on all fronts. And just think, the more revenue you raise, the less part time volunteers you will need. All that space must be worth a fortune, seems a shame to waste it.

First, without volunteers you will have no AVSIM - As it is entirely maintained by volunteers! None of us get paid for what we do here, we do everything for free.

Second, I prefer the staff list to advertising any-day.

I do like that staff list (especially keeping it on the front page) and everything it says about the type of organisation AVSIM is.

And without advertising we would have no Avsim either! You can't pay server fees and utility bills with volunteer cheques!

But you missed my point - if you maximised the advertising space you could maybe even employ a few full time professionals and not have to rely on an army of people who can spare a few hours here and there. I'm not sure what having a Staff list on the front page says about Avsim other than it's run by people who like having their name on the front page. I visit a hundred websites every day - knowing who the admin staff are is of no consequence whatsoever. In fact having it there detracts from the adverts - my eye was drawn to it and if you asked me now I couldn't name a single advert on the front page. That's probably not ideal. There is already an Avsim Staff tab along the top - if anyone really wants to know who the Executive Vice President of Paper Clip Procurement is, couldn't you put something up there?

If we start hiring people this will become a pay-only service, or at the very least some of the things will be only provided for those who would pay. Would you like that?

You keep missing my point about advertising!

By the way there is another FS site which has no advertising at all and every now and then it asks people to put their hands in their pockets to help cover the costs (and then some). Would you prefer that?

From your posts I gather you would prefer us to be full of adverts.

Somehow I think that would annoy most of our users.

No, there is a balance, obviously. I just don't like seeing wasted space but as was mentioned earlier advertising or more features is preferable to a full list of contributors both major and minor and especially on the front page when I do think there is probably very limited interest for that. But it's early days with the new design which as I've said, I do think is an improvement, so I've no doubt it will evolve some more in the coming weeks. And all of this is just my own opinion of course and it wouldn't stop me coming here if the whole of the front page was a staff list in 36pt flashing red letters - I'd just point my Favourites straight to the Forum section instead

We all work very hard in whatever spare time we have available, and are all proud of what we do here at AVSIM. I did not like you referring to the staff list as a 'vanity list' or anything else derogatory; and I happen to think its more important than an advert.

I know and we do appreciate it. Enjoy what's left of Easter! :drinks:

Thanks.

Enjoy what's left of Easter too.

Respect is a two way street, and sometimes the communication style of a (minority) of AVSIM staff can appear that the individual has no value to AVSIM. Some staff are like dinosaurs, barking orders and severely castigating members of this community, often for arbitrary or petty 'offences'. This is not the military, we have not signed up to be addressed in that way; we are supporters of this community and of AVSIM.

Moderation and forum management can be a tough job and sometimes decisions and actions will not be popular, but there is no excuse for a complete lack of willingness to offer one iota of respect and politeness, while delivering that duty.

I say again that I am referring to a minority here; and there are many others in the community who have also observed with disappointment, the type of behaviours and communication I am referring to. Most people are just more afraid than I to say it how it is.

David.
