April 9, 201214 yr I bought the MD11 in the weekend, started studying and today i flew the tutorial. I'm amazed with it!! I had never bought a PMDG Product since i'm more an Airbus guy and the props don't interest me, but after hearing so much good stuff about the MD11 and watching youtube videos i bought it, and it'll do perfectly until the 777 comes out!! I don't understand how it isnt more popular, its a great airplane! Now i completely agree with an update on the MD11
April 9, 201214 yr Congrats. Now you also belong to the trijet elite :P What do you think of its systems compared to the Airbus variants? Manfred G. Ships are cooler that you think.
April 9, 201214 yr Author Well having in mind that it is an old airplane, those systems are great and very technologic! Actually, maybe its the wilco airbus systems who work wrong, but i think the PMDGs MD11 systems work much better than the Wilco airbus i have
April 9, 201214 yr Well done ! It's an amazing aircraft isn't it ? I only wish more folks had bought it (and will continue to buy it). From RSR's remarks at the Aerosoft conference it looks like sales were pretty minimal compared with the Boeing products, and as he said, people seem to want to buy stuff they can see at their local airport or when they fly on business/vacation. That's a shame because there's no real incentive for developers with the skills of PMDG to do anythng as 'different' as the MD-11 in future, and I for one really enjoy flying stuff outside the usual mainstream types. Don't get me wrong - I've been thrashing the hell out of my NGX and will be at the front of the queue to get the 777 and 747v2. I just think it's amazing that the MD-11 didn't sell more given the systems on the real aircraft and the fidelity with which PMDG modelled them. Anyway enjoy it - I sure have. On a personal note I would die a happy man if PMDG ever gave us a DC-8 in pax/freighter variants, but that's just me !! Neil Burgess
April 9, 201214 yr I have been following this forum for a prolonged time now and it is quite interesting to see the MD11 posts. Every 2-3 weeks there is a person commenting on having recently bought the MD11 and being so surprised by the aircraft had to start a thread. It really is an amazing plane and until I bought it from PMDG I didn't know what a technologically advanced bird this was. Well having in mind that it is an old airplane, those systems are great and very technologic! Actually, maybe its the wilco airbus systems who work wrong, but i think the PMDGs MD11 systems work much better than the Wilco airbus i have Which one do you think is old? You do know that the A320 family is older than the MD11 ^^ Manfred Manfred G. Ships are cooler that you think.
April 9, 201214 yr Author Which one do you think is old? You do know that the A320 family is older than the MD11 ^^ Manfred Actually, to be honest with you i didn't knew that, i didn't knew the MD11 until i bought it and i still don't know much about it... I just thought that because the MD11s are becoming extinguished... I think what RSR said it's a huge true, people only buy what they regularly see flying... That's why 737, A32x and 747s are hugely popular

April 10, 201214 yr Actually, to be honest with you i didn't knew that, i didn't knew the MD11 until i bought it and i still don't know much about it... I just thought that because the MD11s are becoming extinguished... I think what RSR said it's a huge true, people only buy what they regularly see flying... That's why 737, A32x and 747s are hugely popular I absolutely agree. It is quite interesting to see since it also affects which livery people chose to fly. I myself living in Sweden and seeing SAS planes (will actually be aboard 3 SAS NG's on Wednesday) have chosen to be part of Scandinavian virtual. The MD11 I fly with FedEx virtual because in the town where I was born we had a FedEx truck that always cached my eye. Makes me think that it is the same reason that many persons on this forum like Southwest just because it is the airline they see the most. IMO it is really sad that the MD11 has almost disappeared from the passenger service and gone over to freight transport. It really seems as if the airlines didn't like the airplane at all. The freight companies liked it but it still became the last nail in the coffin for McDonnell Douglas corp. But they still made an amazing aircraft with a really interesting flight deck and unusual solutions to various problems. Manfred G. Ships are cooler that you think.
April 10, 201214 yr I personally like the fact of taxiing on the MD-11! As the nose gear is quite behind the cockpit it offers you a greater feeling that you are taxiing something big and robust  As sandpatch said it indeed is very sad that the MD-11 is leaving the scenes as a passenger-version. This however is not surprising as the DC-10/MD-11 were originally designed to avoid the ETOPS rule back then, if I am correct. Now with the 777 and especially the higher ETOPS timings approved combined with lower fuel usages, the MD-11 is only good for freight...
April 10, 201214 yr There's something special about the MD-11. The systems, the handling, etc... This plane has gotten a bad reputation because of relatively frequent incidents (and serious accidents) in addition to the dual engine jets getting more and more competitive. As I like to say, the NGX is a fantastic airplane, but the MD-11 is my favorite one. Thibault Dosunmu

No cure. As you just live it, those products are just amazing, next step is you to buy the NGX, the JS41, and tomorrow the 777 :P
April 10, 201214 yr MD-11 is not that old (IMHO), I think a lot of people mistake few numbers for old while the MD-11 and 747-400 are the same age give or take and no one really calls the 747 old. I think simply because more numbers were produced and still in the air today. No one calls the 767 old either and that's older then both MD-11 and 747. -Raven HarrisIntel i7 980X @ 4.43GHz | ASUS Rampage III | Corsair 6GB DDR3 2000MHz | 3 EVGA GTX280 | Corsair 1200 Watt | Intel 510 SSD (RAID 0)PMDG - 747-400/8iF | MD11/F | BAe J41 | 737NG 6/7/8/9 Hope ER/BBJ|777LR/FFlight1- Cessna Mustang
April 11, 201214 yr One of these days I'm going to get the MD-11, it'll probably be when I finally upgrade my rig. MD-11 is not that old (IMHO), I think a lot of people mistake few numbers for old while the MD-11 and 747-400 are the same age give or take and no one really calls the 747 old. I think simply because more numbers were produced and still in the air today. No one calls the 767 old either and that's older then both MD-11 and 747. Where did you get your information? The 747's 1st commercial flight was in 1970. The original 767-200 entered service in 1982 Jon Preston
April 11, 201214 yr Where did you get your information? The 747's 1st commercial flight was in 1970. The original 767-200 entered service in 1982 I said 747-400 (key here is the -400) not talking the 100, 200, and 300's! And like I said, no one calls the 767 old when it's older then the MD-11. Referring to people calling the MD-11 old yet they don't call the 767 old when it's older or the 747-400 old when they are roughly same age. Think you maybe need to re-read what I said. -Raven HarrisIntel i7 980X @ 4.43GHz | ASUS Rampage III | Corsair 6GB DDR3 2000MHz | 3 EVGA GTX280 | Corsair 1200 Watt | Intel 510 SSD (RAID 0)PMDG - 747-400/8iF | MD11/F | BAe J41 | 737NG 6/7/8/9 Hope ER/BBJ|777LR/FFlight1- Cessna Mustang
