May 5, 201214 yr What does these two terms mean? (Terrain + VSD and Collimated HGS (HUD)) They mean the TAWS Terrain Warning and Vertical Situation Displays are both simulated, and that a Collimated HUD is accurately simulated to function exactly as per the 737 NG's HGS (Head Up Guidance System) which is a fold away transparent screen onto which the important flight information and runway position is is projected. PMDG could actually have not bothered to do either of these, since they are both customer avionics options on the NG, and there are certainly 737 NGs out there which don't have that equipment. The TAWS and VSD data appear on the PFD (primary flight display) and allow one to be aware of the height of the terrain you are over even when you cannot see anything out of the windows. A collimated HUD has the information which it displays appear at an apparent distance of a few hundred feet in front of the aircraft, which means that when you shift your position in the cockpit by moving your head around, the parallax shift is such that the runway overlay projected onto the glass remains over where the runway actually is. This means that you can perform a completely blind zero visibility IFR landing manually without the runway actually being visible, and will know if you are in any danger of flying into a mountain. Frankly, the fact that PMDG managed to simulate the collimated HGS so well is really very impressive, as although it is in theory relatively simple to do - requiring the creation of a display which maintains a spatial relationship to the viewpoint - actually pulling it off in FSX is another matter entirely. So there are not many FSX aircraft which have a collimated HUD as far as I am aware, the PMDG 737 NG is one and I think the Lotus L-39C Albatross is another (might be wrong about that, since I don't have the L-39). May 5, 201214 yr +1 for the maddog 2010 i'd add the majestic software dash-8 flight1 citation mustang ( for smaller metal) and the simcheck A300 to the list as well regarding outright systems fidelity ohh and lets not forget DA's fokker 100/70 (its perfect if you're equally at home and happy whether its 2d only, mix of 2d with vc or 3d vc panels like me - but if you're a part of the "i can't fly anything without a vc" crowd best skip this gem...) regards, xavier "If lightning is the anger of the gods, the gods are concerned mostly with trees." -- Lao Tse (6th Century BCE)
May 5, 201214 yr Engine hot starts, starter failure, engine cooling, engine and airframe icing, weather radar, etc etc Engine hot starts are not really a concern from what I understand in the NG because of the EEC, and weather radar is not simulated because it is not possible to be accurately modeled. The maddog is a little more complex in a couple of areas and I like it, but the NGX overall is what I prefer. Obviously, graphically the two can not be compared. Shane Gavin
May 5, 201214 yr Maddoog 2010 is the most complete package in my opinion. Together with FS2Crew one gets a terrific immersive simming experience!
May 5, 201214 yr Commercial Member Although it is not a system , maddog brings realism to a new level, by adding a REAL copilot next to you.. shared cockpit should be a must for hardcore simming... May 5, 201214 yr Commercial Member So there are not many FSX aircraft which have a collimated HUD as far as I am aware, the PMDG 737 NG is one and I think the Lotus L-39C Albatross is another (might be wrong about that, since I don't have the L-39). Al There are more aircraft with collimated HUD in FSX - VRS F/A-18E, Iris A-10A and F-15E, Aerosoft F-16, and few more. First aircraft with collimated gunsight were A2A warbirds, back in FS9. PMDG is first with true HUD in civilian plane. To be honest I can't stand fixed HUD anymore. Michał Puto A2A Simulations | Blockhouse-C | Twitter
