Whether the tower allowed, notices, or cares, there is still no reason for a plane to taxi into that area.

I would just call it the 'culture' of the operations at that airport. Been going on for decades and not going to change anytime soon.

I absolutely understand that. They probably encourage it in order to help keep the tourists coming. However, as a professional pilot who has a license that you worked long and hard for, and is vital to keep in order to maintain a job, why would you do this? If somebody should get hurt from your jetblast and it was caught on video that you had taxied your plane into a prohibited area and blasted the person from there, how do you defend yourself in court? Are you just going to say that they shouldn't have been behind your plane? They can just say you shouldn't have taxied into the overrun. Now you are just as culpable of wrongdoing as the person who got hurt. Why do this?

If you're talking about the Displaced Threshold (DP)...aka chevrons...then yes, you can take off from them, but not land on them. The length of the DP is usually determined by the obstacle in front of it (i.e. the beach and fence). That's not an over-run area.

Check out the length of them at Bakersfield, CA (KBFL). The reason is the mountains to the south.

Correct me of I'm wrong, but that's what it sounds like you're talking about.

No, there is a stopway before the displaced threshold. The stopway/overrun is a blacktop area marked with large yellow chevrons inaccessible from taxiways and not part of the useable runway. It is there for emergency use during takeoff and landing overruns. The displaced threshold is marked by large white arrows, is part of the useable runway and accessible from the taxiway.

Oops, yep, you're right...lol. Yellow...taxiway goes full length of RWY not DP. I can't see large a/c being able to get into the yellow area though without getting into trouble...hehe.

Hi Jeff,

These guys are the Pirates of the Caribean with wings. At least they have fun blasting the tourists.

I bet in the pilots lounge they have a pool going for the most tourists they can blow off the beach and into the sea.

I think it would be a good idea to send a VC10 to give a demonstration take-off!!! Even though the RR Conways are bypass jets the eflux is close to supersonic as it leaves the exhaust. Here are two well trodden videos from YouTube. The first a take-off from Manchester demonstrates the raw power of the engines (turn your volume up to max (I accept no responsibility for the destruction of your sound systems)).

The second taken at the 2010 Biggin Hill airshow. The spectators are standing at about 350ft behind the engines at take-off and they still blow away the History Channel banner.

There would most definately be some airborne beach holidaymakers!!

You've got to be...

... to stand behind something like that. A degree of common sense, and an IQ over double digits is all that's required. Anyone who needs more probably can't be helped.

(I have to admit, though, that it does look like fun, until the sand finds your eyes. What used to be described as 'a bit of a blast'.)

That thing sounds like a fighter jet! (And looks almost more maneuverable than some of them LOL) :-)
