Mach Number?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I was just curious as to if real world operators change the cruise speed of the NG. Now that question seems pretty vague, so let me use an example. When I fly the NGX, I use a Cost Index of 65 - which is a little high, but gas prices in the sim are much lower than that in the real world. With a higher CI, does my cruise speed increase too? My typical cruise speed right now is M.79 and I was wondering if that changes with CI, or if in real life operators of the NG go into the CRZ page and change the cruise speed to let's say M.81 or so - to get to their destination faster.

Is it standard to leave it be at M.79?

Thanks :)

The standard Cost index for the likes of Ryanair is 80

There is something for you to work around

Ryanair will usually fly to about 37000 ft to places like spain and corfu .. of course places like Germany are about 24000 ft below and ireland is about 15000 depends on weather and traffic/.

Your Mach will vary directly with you CI and directly with your headwind and probably other factors. It's not a fixed number.

If you increase your CI for a given atmosphere, your Mach will increase. You can change it by manually in the FMC or MCP.

Well when I fly on the -700 at FL 380/390 is at 0.78 with a MMO of .82, and a CI of 20. CL is .73 again with a MMO .82 service ceiling of 370. ;-)

I think it is mach .82 but don't hold me for it, someone here probably has verified data

Anyone know what a typical WestJet CI would be? I'm Canadian so that's the airline I fly the NGX with :P

Found this on another post, I'm sure the poster doesn't mind us borrowing the information.

That table contains a lot of garbage data. Generally higher cost indexes than what the airliners use. Most use a CI less than 10 these days.
