July 9, 201213 yr when i mention the problems with the Maule i am referring to: - that change they did to prop MOIs / Mass causing the unrealistic blast in power as you retard Prop RPM - it can gain in excess of 10 knots even climbing steeply, when it should slow, and start lowering the nose/descending.. - the way the prop effects are added - torque mainly - and the not so good way the rudder trim is implemented, making even small adjustments impossible because you will be over-compensating... Appart from that, I would for instance, and since it is modelled, have the chance t properly adjust mixture. Unless we use the auto-mixture option, there is no way to properly set the mixture.... No EGT gauge, etc... July 9, 201213 yr unrealistic blast in power as you retard Prop RPM This affects you once per flight. I don't even notice it myself, as I don't jerk the prop back any more. For that matter, I can't be certain that's not how the real plane reacts. Once the prop speed stabilizes, you have the same amount of cruise power you had before the update. the not so good way the rudder trim is implemented, making even small adjustments impossible because you will be over-compensating... I've made my feelings known on the beta forum. For the Maule, you have two ways of fixing the problems without resorting to trim: either turn off prop effects in the options, or burn some fuel from the left tank (or transfer it from the left aux to the left main) until the plane is balanced. For other aircraft (the Cub comes to mind) you have only the first option. No EGT gauge, Like almost every other light aircraft out there. I'd prefer the EGT gauge, but it's certainly not a deal breaker. I'm not trying to be contrary here, jcomm. I have the greatest respect for you. But the problem isn't icing, nor is it a few details on the Maule. Something is being left unsaid. I will admit to a short time of being discouraged with the new Flight update and Alaska. The worst of it was when I first looked at the Alaska map and thought, "What the hell am I supposed to do now?" In Hawaii, it was obvious. In Alaska, you're on your own. Not to mention the lousy excuse for a map. The basic version of the Cub came as a shock, and I didn't fly it at all for a week. Well, the price was right in any case. I finally decided to start off the southeast edge of the map and fly to the end of the Aleutians, which flight I was familiar with from FSX. The Maule worked well for that. As I made that flight I figured out how to get stuff to work the way I wanted, and I'm pretty happy with Alaska now. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! July 9, 201213 yr As I made that flight I figured out how to get stuff to work the way I wanted, and I'm pretty happy with Alaska now. +1 Regarding the prop effect, when I pull my prop rpm back I just put in a few clicks of down trim to get it closer to neutral. As far as the plane wanting to veer left, there is a slight amount for me, but feeding in a small amount of right rudder takes care of that. It really does not bother me that much, and I have no idea how realistic or not it may be. It would be nice for rudder trim to be in finer increments to just trim out for it. Regarding the mixture, normally I would just lean out till I heard the engine start to starve, and then richen slightly from there. Now however I pretty much just lean it out to around 40-41% and leave it there. I am mainly doing in Alaska, what I mainly did in Hawaii - flying jobs in the Maule. The Maule is still my favorite plane. Gives me a little sense of accomplishment, and enjoyment from doing them. And after about 145 hours, I still have quite a lot of fun with Flight. While I was dissappointed with no new VC plane - yet - I was very thrilled with the addtion of Track IR and toe brakes, so there was no hesitation on my end grabbing Alaska. If I can find the time, I would like to get into trying out Gmap with Plan G for something different. Don B
July 9, 201213 yr Regarding the mixture, normally I would just lean out till I heard the engine start to starve, and then richen slightly from there. Now however I pretty much just lean it out to around 40-41% and leave it there. I usually just set the fuel flow to around 7 gallons per hour at 17 inches manifold pressure. There's a trick you can use with the fuel flow meter to find peak EGT. As you lean the engine, after you pass peak EGT the fuel flow drops rapidly. If you're watching the digital tool tip readout for the fuel flow, you can find that spot easily. Even if you just watch the gauge, you can usually esitimate it fairly well. I usually run just a bit rich from that spot. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

July 9, 201213 yr @LHookins, I can only be thankfull for your and others comments. It's more an interior fight between me and me because I haven't changed my mind regarding the fact that MS FLIGHT is indeed a great simulator, and as I pointed out so many times, the one that still gave me the closer to real sensation of flying. Yet I changed my perspectice regarding what I really look forward to be the next DLCs. I know I can't have it all, but one thing is for sure - I will buy only aircraft with a cockpit! I bought Alaska the moment it was announced, and really enjoyed it, but I was disappointed when I found the weather to be only made up of clouds, winds and turbulence, the rest being fixed... I would really like to have more, but, at the same time I know that just as they are now, winds and turbulence have reached, with MS FLIGHT the top of my expectations... If only they added thermals and slope winds .... In conclusion, and because I am sure Jeroen will by now think that it's time to stop this thread, I still love MS FLIGHT, but at the same time I also started to want more from it on what some may call - hardcore - even if there being options to not necessarily deal with all the bells and whistles of a detailled cockpit, such as, for instamce, using a cockpitless aircraft... July 10, 201213 yr Just finished about a 200 km job, took off from Ted Stevens - can't remember name of airport I landed at, it was pretty much due north from there. It was certainly a small strip surrounded by trees. Had to use full down flaps , but landing was very smooth. Went over some pretty tall peaks getting there, don't know about wind from slopes, but at around 7K ft clearing those tops, I was getting knocked around pretty good - certainly made it interesting. Thankully my one female passenger along for the ride with the cargo didn't complain. Thanks for the tip on mixture Hook, worked great! It was fun playing around with it in the Maule watching the fuel flow as I continued to climb higher and adjusting it as I went. Don B
July 10, 201213 yr So I guess we are waiting to hear about the perfect simulator that you have found to take Flights place, and how totally bug free it is. It's not that at all. If you go back and read his posts, you'll find that jcomm has been a major supporter all along. Like he says, he still loves Flight. I didn't expect any new weather, and we got two new themes from the update that came just before Alaska. I'm not saying I like these themes better than what we had before, but at least we have something different. Individual weather effects are stunning, but they aren't integrated well. Weather still has a long way to go. Just gotta learn to keep expectations reasonable, and not put all your hope into the next update to have the moon on a stick. Even if it's a small moon. I still say this isn't about features, or lack of them, but something deeper. That's ok, I respect jcomm enough not to press it. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! July 10, 201213 yr And, the tittle of the thread itself says it all.... :-) @Bobsk8: There is no thing as the perferct sim, of course... The CAE A320/21/19 I used at Air Portugal's trainning center had it's quirks too, so described the two captains that hosted me there during 1hr of landings at LPMA under really rough weather... By that time I was a real hardcore simmer, using all of the systems of a b744 or almost all on an A320 by the book, I guess, but, none ever really gave me the sensation of being there... I'll continue to email [email protected] with my suggestions. I'm sure some will have the chance to get sorted out some way ... @Hook: Thanks for the kind words and for understanding ;-) and for the leaning tip. I was using the sound as a clue with the cockpitless aircraft, but I was completely unaware of that FF-based technique! That's a limitation of someone who just flies motorless aircraft in RL :-) Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
