July 16, 201213 yr Hi guys, I'm a newbie with getting processors. Right now I have a I7 Core Processor 920 2.66GHz 8 MB LGA 1366. What would be a good move up? I looked on amazon but they confuse me because some have more GHz but the price is lower, I always thought the more GHz the better it is. I know the best minds are in this forum so any feedback would be great! -Travis "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." July 16, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the reply aceridgey, this is what confuses me thought. The CPU I have now costs more than the sandy bridge 2500k. Is this right? July 16, 201213 yr Travis, IMHO the i5 2500k is the most economical processors for FSX. It is the next generation from the one you have. By the way you need to sign your full name as per forum rules or the moderators will scold you. B) Jerry Sterner

Do you have a decent cooler for your I7 920. Mine runs at 4Ghz with a Skythe Muggen 2. It is a lot faster than at stock speed but a little slower than the I5 2500K oc to 4Ghz. Look for tutorials on how to overclock it properly. The procerssor is not bad at all and can handle in my case the NGX easily. Roland Schmalzl

Also I don't know the first thing with overclocking, that word scares me anyhow I just picture my computer in flames. -Travis Medgard "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." July 16, 201213 yr Author Hi Aceridgey, I think the only problem with the i5 is that I'll have to get a new mother board and ram. I have a 1366 slot "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." Leonardo da Vinci
July 17, 201213 yr Author Went with the i7 990X Extreme Edition Processor 3.46 GHz 6 Core LGA 1366, wish me luck but I better not need it with what I just paid! July 17, 201213 yr The 1366 architecture is now obsolete. You will need to budget for a CPU, motherboard, RAM and cooler. Expect about £330 for an entry level with minor overclocking such as : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-080-OE&groupid=43&catid=2053&subcat= Went with the i7 990X Extreme Edition Processor 3.46 GHz 6 Core LGA 1366, wish me luck but I better not need it with what I just paid! Thanks for all the help guys Yes, you've just got yourself an upgrade (don't really know how much it is going to help, though), but that is by no means "the CPU for NGX". Sandy Bridge "K" CPUs are the ones for NGX, ORBX whatever. If you want my opinion, I think the i5 2500K is the best, but there will be others saying the i7 2600K/2700K is the one to get. Anyway, Sandy Bridge has been the CPU for FSX for quite a while and by the looks of it, it will remain so for the next 9 months at least. I will second what was said above, better get your money back if you still can. Marius Petrascu

I generally agree that if you are not interested in overclocking an I 5 2500 K is definitely the better choice due to its higher stock speeds and slightly more modern architecture. On the other hand an I7 920 is still a fairly powerful CPU but you would need some knowlegde how to get the speed up. At stock speed the I7 920 can't compete with the I5 2500 K. Roland Schmalzl

I guess if it is an online order that should be no problem. DO NOT open it. Seriously, I will come and spank you if you do. Now, order a decent 2nd or 3rd gen CPU, 3770K or 2700K, with a new mobo, fast RAM and a good GPU and you'll be flyin. MUCH BETTER than with the 990X. Price is not everything, especially when it comes to FSX. If you had dough for 990X, then you have for the new combo.
