September 9, 201213 yr What is with the green algae looking stuff on the interior of the engine cowling? The green is actually the zinc chromate primer used on aviation metal components to protect against corrosion. Inside the turbine inlets there are engine particle separator screens that over time dust and dirt particles etch away the paint exposing the zinc chromate primer underneath. Centrifugal force forces tiny particles of dust, dirt, and salt through the separators to prevent ingestion through the core of the engine where over time they would cause premature internal wear or damage. Some engine components only get the zinc chromate treatment with no paint at all, which is why you see green components on the reverse thrust cascades during reverser operation. Cheers, Cpt. I guess they are cleaning up the flightdeck for us and Rob is trying to get rid of that fingerprints and smudges LOL I really really really hope to see an update next weekend - got my fingers crossed to see the cockpit of this tremendous bird.
