aeroflyFS and Flight

Featured Replies

Yesterday (Friday) when I was at Airventure 2012 I was walking through one of the exhibitor buildings and I came areoss the aroflyFS booth. They had the sim running on a couple screens and some people playing. I started talking to the guy there about the fact that MSflight had been cancelled. He was bumbstruck, he had heard nothing about flights demise. He said that while it was "to bad" it could only help his sales in the long run. So, in a moument of weaknes I bought a copy. Do I have buyers remorse, sort of. I have played with it for a while today and found it somewhat lacking after being spoiled with flight. However I will continue to check it out as they will keep updating. It is interesting and comes with eight aircraft and I think it will only get better. Meinwhile I am finding my way around switzerland, I am able to run it with all the sliders maxed. But after that I just had to go back to Flight and do a sightseeing job in Hawaii to get my FIX. Oh, I also talked with the guy at the X-plane 10 booth, but that just does not do it for me. I will go back and revisit FSX again also, it is still on my drive,Sad to say but flight just had everthing I have been looking for for a long time. Throught I had found it.

Flight set the bar really high for anyone that is in the PC Sim business.

All theses other "sims" are suddenly coming out of the wood work again. It happens every single time there is a ripple in the flight simulator community force! It's always somewhat humorous because they have been around for years. What about ole FLY!

I think Aerofly has great promise. The graphics are much closer to next gen, and with the right resources it could certainly "be a contender"

The reason why I hold back from it in many ways is..... resources. Without the deep pockets and innate cachet of somebody like Microsoft backing it, I worry that the pace of advancement will be glacially slow. At the same time, the "simplicity" and design philosophy of flight that caused its rejection by many in this community are in many cases duplicated, right up front and center, though there has been no comparable outcry against the sim.

Its something to keep an eye on, but it needs critical mass.

It is an RC sim ( I spent many years flying RC helicopters). http://www.aerofly.com/index.html

The Pitts is really well done and fun to fly. It also has a 172 Skyhawk, Extra 330LX, Discus sail plane, Swift S1 moter glider Jodel Robin DR 400 and a Sopwith Camel. And for the fast movers a F/A-18 Hornet. It is a pretty basic flight sim at this time but does show potential. Trackir is supported and works well also.

I have followed it since it first burst on the scene. I am still following it, and wish the forums here were more active. As I said, I think it has many possibilities if it can be expanded. I keep track of Xplane as well, and still I cannot for the life of me articulate coherently why even with recent improvements, it does not yet "grab me"

How come there are no trains, and boats, and people, and other aircraft, and ships, and trucks, and swimming pools and football stadiums with a game going on , and strip clubs....etc.....etc.......

Oh, here is what I am driving this week.

Soothing, isn't it?

Back on topic, I think that its interesting that two simulators with the approximate same audience (more casual simmers) would arrive at approximately the same time.

I wonder how the program would fare on Steam? The current distribution model is certainly not building much name identity beyond the flight community.

I have downloaded the X-Plane demo over the years more times than I can count, and each time I tried running it for the crummy 15 minutes that Mr Bigheart gives you to figure out if you want to drop your hard earned money on his product. I never was impressed enough to get my credit card out and wound up deleting it each time. First of all, why he would put a large jet aircraft on the demo, for people to...... ah wait... I know why, cause he knows in 15 minutes you won't get the bloody thing off the ground and see what flying in Xplane really feels like.

I would not have put it that way..........

I tried XP many many times. Every time I try, I wind up spending vastly more time lost in the menu system then flying. I think it took me two HOURS just to configure the stupid joystick.

MvGibbage-yes there is a learning curve. But if you want to get closer to even a better simulation of xwind takeoffs/landings than flight did it is there for your taking and the purchase of a good Xplane add in.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

On the subject of Xwind takeoffs/landings in XPlane I must disagree. I have asked around on the XPlane forum and also searched all over for answers as to a way to make lighter GA aircraft behave realistically in a Xwind when on the ground. This seems to be an accepted issue for XPlane for lighter aircraft. I do not fly heavies, but I have seen the same said by others about their behavior.

Unfortunately, I find that I must use quite a fair amount of rudder input to prevent the aircraft from weathervaning while on the ground in a gentle crosswind of under 5 kts (no turbulence, no gusts). In heavier aircraft, the problem is less pronounced, but it is still there. The effect of weathervaning totally overrides the effect of torque during the takeoff roll if the wind is from the right side. All you need to do is nudge the throttle a hair to get the aircraft moving at a snails pace and watch it immediately turn to the right. Having flown in the exact same conditions in a real aircraft (C172) numerous times, this is a very big issue for me.

I last left it with GoranM who offered to find a way to address this for me, but I never heard back. :( We exchanged a few emails on it and I used various parties advice to try various aircraft downloads and all exhibited the same problem.

Once in the air, X-Plane does an excellent job, but this incorrect behavior on the ground on taxi, takeoff and landing totally blows it for me.
