Do you think we will see four seasons anytime soon in XPX, like maybe in 10.20? I was not a player in the XP9 arena, but was there ever suppose to be seasons in it also? I'm really enjoying XPX regaurdless, but seeing something new would be great on the eyes. :p0502:

Well, here's a big problem with the 4 seasons...each object and landclass would have to be remade to use the four seasons and load the texture applicable to the season. That means reworking the scenery engine and probably a major headache they're not going to tackle any time soon. I would be surprised to see it before XP11 with all the other things they have to rework, such as performance limitations and enhancing the rendering pipelines to increase rendering performance. It's possible, but depending on Austin's perception of the season's enhancement to his product, it may be low on the list compared to other things on their existing to-do list. One biggie is art assets and the auto-gen system's placement of the assets to create a PLAUSIBLE world, one that doesn't put a high-rise 20-floor building within .5 miles of the final approach corridor to a runway so you have to go through it to land the ILS. There's some reworking of the existing features sets. Bug's are things that make the sim unusable. The building on the ILS is more an annoyance (you CAN fly though it, but it dampens the reality of doing so).

I did not know there was not 4 seasons. What season do we have? I never really gave it much thought. So with that, I have to say "As Real as it Gets" NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep :-( ... bad news.... I loved the first versions of x-plane with the sceneries becoming white in winter, and the rws contaminated too....

 

Well... Big disappointment, have to confess - didn't try it yet ...

A few month ago Ben said that he would make XP10 capable of seasons because 3rd party developers asked for it. But I never heard anything about it since then and I think it's not that easy to do it right...

I don't think that there is really a big technical problem, it is more a logistical problem.

At the moment there is a huge amount of artwork still missing and if you want to add seasons you have to add three times more artwork.

And while there are some sceneries developer who ask for this feature there are other developer who wouldn't support seasons anyway.I would guess there won't be any seasons before X-Plane 11 or 12.

Well, I thought this too - at first. But then someone pointet out that flying around the globe means having different seasons "at the same time" and how the transitions should be handled, how the weather would affect the scenery etc. From that a couple of problems alike arose and I began to understand that it is not as simple as creating another set of textures or more artwork. It needs some thought to make season really "plausible".

Sure, but these are things that even FSX never did correctly. It is rewally interesting what several peoiple thought FSX would do and what it really did... I6t simply switched the textures when the date was in another season. So you would fly through snow even if the weather outside was 20 degrees and the plants were unsure if it could really be spring...

If you really want to do good seasons it wilöl be very complicated, but most people never realised how limited and stupid the FSX seasons really are.

With all due respect. I would take "limited and stupid" seaonal changes, over none what so ever. I think FSX did a respectable job, considering.

If XP provides season textures, I wonder how much hard disk space it requires?

Well, at least they put it into the feature wishlist, but when I see the amount of changes that has to happen abd take a look at the costs, I see a feature that probabkly won't be attempted in the foreseeable future. There will always be other important features which can be changed faster and on a tighter budget.

Agreed. XPX is great how it is. Just wondering, that's all.

Am I understanding this correctly and XP10 is not currently capable of having seasonal changes at this time, and this isn't just a case of lacking the appropriate art assets?

it was mentioned that the engine is capable. its a question of resources... but to make it clear, i'm not missing the seasons at all, it's all a question of preferences...
