Loooking for PIH and SLC scenery Addons

Featured Replies

The fs9 KSLC scenery Addon listed on Freeware is currently labeled obsolete.

Also the KPIH addon on the Freeware list is shown as current but is actually a WW2 Army Base. I used to fly in to PIH years ago on my route and would love to have it. Pocatello is the second largest city in Idaho and it is strange that there is no civilian version new or old

KIDA would be nice also.

Thanks robertschiele9 I'm going to try thst SLC download you sent. The readme instructions say to use Folder Options and I know how to find them in Control Panel but I don't know how to use them. Can you explain what is meant by that statement?

Thanks,

JGSJW

It refers to the unpacking process of the zip file. That way the install will be directed to the correct locations in an automatic manner. Ok if you are noy happy moving stuff and having a root around I guess.

Personaly I prefer to unpack to a folder of my choice. and then add into the scenery library. That way I know what has gone where, if you catch my drift.

Arnie....if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

So, these instructions say to transfer the download into a temp folder which I always do. Then it says to extract the three internal zip files to the MAIN FS9 folder and that the three zips extractions will set up there own subfolders automatically.

But you say that one can create his own subfolder (skipping the Folder Options process) and name it whatever enabling one to know exactly where everything went and then to Activate it in the Scenery Library and it will all function.Am I on track so far?

The "Folder Options" refers to the way the files are extracted from the zip file. It is not something in the control panel, but in the zip extraction process. I think it is on by default. What it means is that the scenery creator has taken a bunch of folders (full of files) and compressed them into the ZIP file. If you then uncompress that file with the folder options on, then you will get those folders created on your disk (in whatever folder you like: eg: C:\Temp).

If you don't use the "folder option" then you will get all the files extracted into one single folder on your hard drive and you will have no way of knowing what should go where.

Generally, I would advise you to extract the zip files as instructed, but extract into a temporary folder as suggested above (eg: C:\Temp). Then you can manually move those folders to wherever you like.

Hope that makes sense. :)

I've never paid attention to the "Folder Options" part of the instructions, since I use 7-Zip, and I've disabled Windows7's built-in .zip file extraction process. But the included diagram from the archive's instructions file shows (pretty clearly, I think) which files go where:

-FS9

---Addon scenery

------slc

---------scenery <--slc scenery files go here

---------texture <--slc texture files go here

------scenery <--genobj.bgl and FedExTrucks.bgl goes here

------texture <--general object and FedEx textures go here

---effects <--effect files go here

---texture <--effect texture goes here

The files from the last two archive folders, as you can see, go in the main FS9 effects and texture folders, not under "Addon Scenery," which is where everything else goes. If you get it installed correctly, I think you'll like the scenery. LIke everything else produced by Gary Widup that I've installed, it's great to look at and it functions perfectly, demonstrating that he's a meticulously careful designer. It's a little frames intensive if you are running a very low-end system (i.e. CPU clock speed under 3 Ghz or so) but it's worth it.

If you want to take a look at more of his work. search the Avsim File Library for "Gary Widup" and limit your search to FS2004. I recommend his sceneries without hesitation to anyone.

This is a perfect demonstration of why you should unzip to a temporary folder.

Regardless of what Gary thinks is best, I do not want object libraries in Addon Scenery\scenery.

I appreciate his efforts, and yet think we should be responsible for what goes where on our own computers.

I say this because I have spent a lot of time troubleshooting my system, and helping others, after following instructions in readme files that were less than accurate.

It's better to learn how this stuff works and set up your system so you can keep control of it.

I agree with you. I was merely reproducing the included instructions to try and demonstrate the suggested folder and file placement, not necessarily endorsing it. And I'll also point out that while it's fine for you (and perhaps me) to experiment a bit and see what other such placements might work as well, a good many "newbies" of which we've seen so many posting here lately and asking very basic, simple questions, might be well-advised to stick with what the designers recommend, especially if they really don't (as seems obvious) even grok what unzipping entire folders versus only their contents means, let alone how to do one as opposed to the other.

I wasn't criticizing you, simply voicing an opinion and trying to teach. Which is why I said...

No offense taken here. You're absolutely right that it is a good thing to understand folder/file structures, perhaps more so in any of the FS programs than most. Based on some posts I've read here recently, it seems that more than one "newbie" has gotten hold of FS9 without having that kind of basic understanding, which is why we see posts about "disappearing" default textures, etc. I almost think it might be helpful if someone would post, and Avsim would keep prominent some kind of basic FAQ on such issues somewhere here in the forums. There are several issues which most casual computer users never have to worry about, let alone understand--until they get hooked up with FS, in which case that lack of knowledge can lead them straight into problems.

I can second Joe not enough. I even recommend to install new sceneries in a sandbox first.

There was a nice example just yesterday, when I bought MHTG 2012 by Taxi2gate. Installed it into the sandbox (there's no problem registering the software at simmarket via Internet from the sandbox), studied the folders path. There were two sub-sceneries, one with the airport itself and one with phototerrain. The last contained an empty "texture"-folder which already made my eyebrows rise, as textures for phototerrain are usually in another folder. I copied all the files to their appropriate positions within FS2004, edited scenery.cfg, tested it and - CTD. Having studied the case, it was easy for me to delete the empty texture folder within the phototerrain and all worked fine.

If an installer of this quality works without being supervised, perhaps copying all the files deep inside an "Addon Scenery" folder, one will be lost with finding the cause for misbehaviour of the sim.

Regards to all!
