Reality XP GNS 430 ......Opinions

Featured Replies

I bought the RXP GNS specially for the Legacy and I went for the 530 version: as Ryan said: bigger screen!

BTW Other things I like about the GNS: terrain warnings! Works like a charm! I didn't expect to be using that function at all but it's really great! And don't forget about all kinds of GPS approaches you can do with the GNS (something I DID expect to use and I love it)! Great stuff.

BTW Installing the GNS530 into the Legacy takes something like 2 clicks in the Legacy's config panel. It couldn't be easier to do.

So do you think I should opt for the 530 so? Considering I can only use it as a pop up window in the Carenado 172 it sounds like the better option.

I would start with the 530.. the bigger screen is a plus, if it fits in the panel.

I've had both for a bit less than a year or so now and wouldn't be without them. The general consensus has always been that the 430 is more versatile due to size while the 530 with its larger screen is more useable. In my case, I bought the 430 first for size reasons, but added the 530 within a few weeks. Not because I was unhappy with the 430 but because I realized how good it was and knew I'd love the 530 even more.

I would definitely recommend the 530 if it was just for the Legacy. I don't have the 172, but from what Bert indicates you won't be able to integrate it into the panel due to the 3D knobs and no direct integration support. Consequently, the only way you could use either would be as a popup only so the smaller size of the 430 might not matter as much to you.

FYI, most newer Carenados - pretty much everything from the 210 on other than the G1000 182T - have utilities (though not quite as elegant as Real Air's) that allow integration into panels with 3D knobs and support some combination of 430, 530 or both, so the 3D knob thing becomes a non-issue.

Also there's a few planes (other than Carenado) off the top of my head that work with 3d integration:

Aerosoft Katana 4x - 530

Baytower RV7 - 530

Lotus L39 - 430

Duke/Turbine - both

Yes, the Katana was already integrated when I opened the configuration manage. I purchased the 530 this evening and just gave it a test drive in the Carenado C172 ( pop-up) between KSEA and KTDO (OrbX). I didn't bother doing any navigation, just a simple "direct to way-point" to view all of the various screens etc. I'm very impressed with the terrain visuals and VNav. I've a bit of reading to do but this looks like a worthwhile investment.

BTW, the navdata appears to be out of date since 2007 but TBH I haven't read any literature yet so this is only an observation for now.

Thanks for all the tips.

Note Bert's response earlier and the link he provided. There, you'll find instructions to get you to the June 2011 data.

Enjoy,

Scott

Let's just face it, eventually you'll have both in there :)

Anthony,

You mentioned "I purchased the 530 this evening and just gave it a test drive ".

So, you should be hooked by now!

Can I ask a huge favour???

Can somebody please place an aircraft in EICK, Ireland and tell me if they can see ILS feathers for R17 and R35 in the GNS 430/530. I'm a bit concerned that my local airports aren't displaying these details. I can select the ILS approaches to these runways yet the feathers aren't there.Or maybe the updated navdata will sort the issue whenever I get around to it. Actually I'm bit surprised the download didn't come pre-loaded with the latest data.

There are no feathers on the map, on a GNS530.

If you can select the ILS approaches, or on some airports GPS approaches, you are OK.

The approach, when selected, will give you a magenta line to follow.

Well, thanks to all, especially Bert, for your help with this query. I successfully updated the navdata to the latest version and completed my first IFR flight ( KSLE;RAWER;BTG;MALAY;ONALS;KGRF) in the Legacy with the GNS 530. I also used http://www.navplan.com/index.php# to plan the flight.

Actually, the whole thing went pear shaped when I tried to execute the approach to ILS R15 so I had to switch off AP and recover the situation. Nevertheless, I'm getting there. It's a pity about the lack of ILS feathers though, they are a handy indication of how things are unfolding.

Sounds like it is working for you!

The feathers are an FS invention... and yes, they actually can be pretty handy..
